When my girls were little, I planned every meal. I was doing family day care once stateside. No waste. Perfect portions. When I divorced, I was working two full time jobs. I generally ate one meal a day at the restaurant. I have tried meal planning with DH. If I pull stuff out of freezer ahead of time to thaw, we get busy and I end up throwing out. I am grateful for the microwave to thaw as needed. I know many disapprove of the microwaves, but it is my number one must have in kitchen after fridge and stove. If I am doing a roast in the crockpot, I will pull that out a couple days ahead and put in fridge. I am picky on produce a generally only buy a week worth of fruits and veggies.
Allie- We know you want sprung, but we need you to be healthy.
Apparently I didn't post yesterday- oops!
Took truck in to get tires checked before trip home, so walked to outlet mall. I bought 2 new pairs of Levi's and several fall/winter tops.
Came back to cabin, dropped off truck, picked up Miata. Almost hit a bear cub that crossed the drive in front of us! We wait years to see a bear...saw one last year...this year our sightings are abundant!
Then went to The Island. Shopped some more, learned about dinosaurs, and road the big Ferris wheel. Lots of steps. Came home, unloaded Miata, then realized the bear cub must have been behind the truck! Lots of pics and videos. I can't wait to share on FB once I am home.
Momma bear was just in yard again. We will be picking up an air horn when we go into town today. They are not bothered by our presence but at some point we will need to load vehicles to head home.
The last is momma bear. Apparently she eats well here. She had 4 cubs this year!
I need to get my day going-maybe. I know one thing.…I won't be walking the driveway here!
Hugs!
Congratulations!
Prayers!

Kylia, I am right there with you on microwaves. We use our stove & oven occasionally but we always use our microwave.
Are the black bears dangerous there? The ones in the Canadian Rockies would usually leave people alone unless they had food.

Kylia I use a steamer instead of a microwave because ours was always on the counter and I use the counter space for other things like my yogurt maker. I did put the microwave in the basement, so if I decide I need it for something I have it. The steamer I use is an insert that fits over a three quart pan. I like it because I can boil something in the bottom and steam something on top like my veggies. I just like the taste better cooked this way versus a microwave.
Neighbor's DH was quite frail for the past year so although never easy it was not a sudden death. Still it does give me pause because of his age.
Mo The birthday celebration was for my cousin. She took me to this restaurant for my birthday last year. We are about the same age.
Watched a you tube video last night about how medications, supplements, hydration, and what you eat and when you eat can effect results from a blood draw. If something is really off it might be worth having another draw to confirm it
Still learning more about oxalate in what is considered healthy food choices like beets, spinach, rhubarb, almonds, chocolate…I am making small adjustments to my diet with this in mind. I substituted arugula for spinach for quite some time. I will have small amounts of spinach if it is in a dish when I eat out. It is better if it is fresh versus cooked. Too much oxalate in the diet can contribute to kidney stones and joint pain. I have had some planter fascitis that may be related to too much oxalate. I am cutting back on dark chocolate. I learned it is best not to go cold turkey but to gradually reduce oxalate in your diet. I do have dairy in my diet that helps but learned it will buffer the oxalate but will reduce the available calcium to your bones and muscles. This might be part of my leg cramping problem. Healthy muscles help to create healthy bones.
I also learned having calf muscles over 33 cm for women is important for overall strength in walking and standing. My is 37 cm. This is my opinion and I don't have a source to quote it. I think it is just common sense that having strong core muscles helps with balance and breathing which keeps you strong as you age.
I am trying to find my info without googling because it seems to always go to AI now. The problem for AI for me is my Malware bites warns me there are many threats in AI. So I am going to more trusted sites and groups I am already part of like this one to get info.

Machka- I would say that the bears around the cabin are fairly use to people. The problem comes when people leave food in their cars, unsecured trash, or just want to feed the bears. The locals will tell you that's when people put death warrants on the bears. The bears will learn to get food from people and are then dangerous. The ones around us know we are here, but seem to be minding their own business. We empty and lock vehicles each night. We eat inside. Our trash (even though would be in bear proof containers) won't go out until the morning we leave. I love seeing the bears in their natural habitat, not dependent on people.

Morning, kids…
Was up until 3 a.m. this morning. I think I'm getting more and more sensitive to caffeine, and I also think the sleeping aids aren't working for me in the slightest, so I will be easing off of those, as well. They helped me heal for many years, and I'm grateful for that beyond measure.
Kylia - I absolutely love watching the deer that wander along the treeline and the gopher that lives under the red shed and the hummingbirds as they slug it out over the feeders… that sense of being part of nature instead of standing apart from it is so satisfying! You may have noticed, though, that none of these are able to smack me into the middle of next week with a paw. 😂 I'm so glad you treat the bears' presence with respect, and I think an airhorn is a very good idea. Much respect to you for treating them like the wild animals they are.
Heather - Your brother looked so thin in that picture. I hope he's in good spirits. When it's hard to eat, it's hard to get through the days. Sounds like you had a good time. Enjoy your afternoon with Bea!
Tracey - I sent you a message here on MFP with other ways to contact me if you didn't already have them. Walking away from FB is a very good thing for me at this stage of my life. I've honestly been thinking about it for months.
Rita - When I went to send Tracey that message, I saw your message from April. Shows how often I check them here, I'm sorry! 😲👀😉 I sent you back the link you wanted to the sweater pattern, but realized I could just put it here as well:
I've done it in every weight yarn from fingering up to bulky—a very easy pattern. Probably why the hexagon cardigans are so popular!I need to jump in the Kicks and stop at the gas station here in my little village and fill up before I head for town. My low fuel light came on while I was on the way home from the dermatologist yesterday, but was on the phone with a friend, and didn't notice it until I got home and parked the car! 😂👀🤷🏻♀️
Still got about a 35-mile range left, and that is genuinely a technological leap which I truly love. I keep that reading of how many miles of fuel I have left up all the time when I'm driving, and appreciate not having to do the math in my head and try to guess how far an eighth of a tank will get me!
Speaking of technology, I did go back and get a digital scale at Walmart. I'll keep the dial one for a backup, but not being able to see the exact number was making me a little agitated, so I got a Healthometer one for $18, no joke. All it does is tell you the weight. Not the fat or water or BMI or anything else. Just your weight. So maybe the key is to use the technology, but use only the bits you need.
Headed to town to go to the thrift store for wrinkly's day (30-percent off for 55-plus). Starting to put together the fabrics I want for my daughter's quilt that will probably take me at least a year to make.
This has kept going long enough, so I'll post pics later from my phone. Got a few snaps in the garden and the front yard while I was out watering…
Love,
Lisa in AR6 -
😀 These are from the old days in the 1950's when people didn't know to stay away from the bears and not feed them.

Hello ladies! Hugs to those that wish them!((((((((hug))))))
Allie, thinking about you today! 💖🙏
Balanced the checkbook this morning, but got into a wee kerfuffle with husband regarding reciepts, etc. He sometimes talks to me in his stern voice, and I just talk back to him in MY stern voice. He hates when he knows he's right, and I am like, "I could be wrong but why don't you just humor me and let me be right!?? Then he laughed and I laughed. That's about it on disagreements. Its a flash in the pan, then its over. Which I am thankful for. I think if he really yelled I would just bawl like a baby.
Today I see my nutritionist at 1 pm. I have taken screenshots of some reports to show her, and some days I was high on sugar, sodium, etc so she can get an idea of my diet. She will probably give me a talk on trying to eat more, but I am happy with the amount I eat now. I seem to be in a happy place, where I eat meals that satisfy me, I am not overly full, and seem to be processing everything well. I tend to eat the same things weekly. My meals are fairly simple. Some are processed foods like the protein chips "Legendary!" puts out, or chicken nuggets/tenders that "Applegate Naturals" puts out, but on the whole, my foods are fairly clean. I look at ingredients a lot more and things with lots of sodium, or sugar get put back on the shelf.
Talked to my youngest son in San Diego. It was not a video call but just on the phone. He wasn't responding to any requests for " I need a check in from you", so I just called him. He said he's been feeling a little rough these days. The antibiotics they have him on, (to deal with C Diff), 4 times a day makes his Crohn's worse, so he hasn't had much energy these days. He sees his GI 24th, and sees a surgeon on 22nd. More of an intro into possible options. He's finally getting paperwork started for his separation board. Nothing had been done until now because the doctors were hopeful he could stay in. That is not the case. Son and I chatted about how he feels about all that. The word "relief" came to mind as he was talking about how he felt. I am not sure what the surgeon will say, but I did say if he has to have surgery that we will come down to be with him, (as much as the Navy will let us).

Do any of you just have days where you don't do anything useful? Today I feel like a slug! 😣

Some days all I manage is a shower, doing puzzles, watch a movie, fix food for myself or cooking for husband. That's it. I did check in with sons, and video chatted with eldest sis yesterday. Sometimes you just have slug days, and its nothing to ponder about.😁🤗

Cute birthday girl pic! Glad you're home, saline-ified. I think you shouldn't be watching the kids for a spell, and just concentrate on yourself. (My opinion, said out of love for you and your health). If they don't have any sitters, then one needs to take off work. Your daughter isn't working correct? I know it isn't my business.🙃

As I said - pictures from my walkabout this morning. I dumped an overabundance of morning glory seeds into this old stump. It is from the tree that fell on the edge of the house three years ago. I threw the seeds in two years ago this fall, and It's finally really started blooming this summer. The mushrooms, on the other hand started to take over almost immediately.
Just directly behind it is the redbud tree Corey got me for my birthday. The redbud got hit by a Fedex driver backing up in the snow, but while the main trunk eventually died, it just kept going and throwing up new branches
I really do love this place. Everything just keeps growing… except the grass, and it got slowed down a lot by the lengthy hot, dry weeks.
The last pictures of course are after after Egg jumped up on my desk and pushed my emery board off, then proceeded to play with it like a mouse, throwing it in the air and flipping it over and over again… I wouldn't mind so much, but she never puts my stuff back! 🤔😎😂🐈⬛
Ha!
Time for a nap - that four/five hour sleep wasn't long enough.

Well had a nice nap..but criminy got on the scale and im darn near 150 lbs again
Im sure most of it is water weight as they have punched in so much and I haven't eaten much.whomever asked about doing nothing? Carol? That's been me for a long long time.I have a feeling once they get the parathyroid surgery done I'll feel alot better

Given that I work full-time ... rarely.
Although, when I was sick recently, there were a couple slug days.
3 -
Carol - yes I sometimes have those days but I find it helps to write a done list on those days. You might find out you did more than you think. Besides everyone needs a down day every once in a while and yes getting dressed and making your bed are productive things.

I took this on a garden tour years ago. Son helped get my old photos on a flash drive so now I have more flower pictures to share and bring back the memories of garden tours. I did not get to any this year because of the rain, heat, and air pollution. I have really enjoyed my own gardens. The marigolds are spectacular this year. They are like small bushes at my son's house!
He also helped me with Malware bites!

Hi Lovely Ladies,
I’m reading most of the time just so me focused it seems selfish to post…. But a few things hit me the last few days.
Bears: I was backpacking in the back county of Yosemite in the 1970’s (college) and had a bear sit down on the corner of my tent with me in it – We had everything edible or smelly (lotion/toothpaste) up in the trees. And the bear did not seem interested in me or my tent just decided to sit a bit. I was so darn scared… but just laid there quietly and after just a few minutes which felt like hours it got up and moseyed on.
Allie and any others on meds who don’t feel good….. I was really sick after being given a blood pressure medication, went round and round with the doctor who finally diagnosed me with heart burn…. More meds… I finally got smart and with a retired nurse friend went over the “side effects” and on of them was heart burn, The doctor told me the truth, and said she had never looked at the side effects of that medication. I ended up on a new blood pressure med , no heart burn med, and a new doctor. But with all these new health things I have read the side effects and contra indications and called a few of my doctors attentions to the paper work and had a few meds changed or cancelled. I wish I didn’t feel the need to do this – that there was something catching all this for us, but I really think we have to be proactive and read all the paper work ourselves.
Toilet Tissue: during the pandemic, toilet tissue was hard to get in my area, so I paid way to much attention to it! LOL but I realized that with the nicer (quilted northern, charmin, angel soft…) paper I needed 2 squares for pee, and 3 squares for poo, sometimes 5-6 if it was messy…. But with the store brand I would need 4-5 squares for pee, and 10+ for poo…. I decided the more expensive was actually cheaper because I used so much more to get the job done.
Mom – my mom continues to age and not gracefully. It has made me fully aware of something we had not talked about. My family is very open about talking about wills, trusts, death, dying, and ceremonies after. But my mom assumed that she would be able to take care of herself until she just dropped dead. And for me this is my first up close experience with this. My dad and my close (physically) grandparents all just suddenly died. But what my mom had not accepted or spoken to me about is what do you want if you just can not take care of things anymore. So she is claiming she can and will (sometimes does) clean the house – it is not clean. She is claiming to shower regularly – not. She is not making healthy meals. But her reaction to all of this is NO to housecleaning, NO to help showering, NO to a meal that just needs to be microwaved or tucked in the toaster oven. And her reaction to my trying to have conversations is I just want to die, I don’t want it to be like this. I am making decisions against her will, decisions to keep her safe, clean and fed. I so wish I had had some of these discussions with her before now. And I will be having these discussions with my god-kids and nephew. I think I will also put some of it in writing. Just a thought for all of us trying to make our executor/power of health care persons life a little easier.

Hello everyone;
Pip, your sister was beautiful. When did you and Kirby get married in September?DH and I got married on September 7, 1996. I can't believe we've been married for so long. Then I think of everything we went through, and it is true.
Carol, I have been a slug except at work over the past two weeks. I don't want to do anything but watch TV and play Scrabble. Baby Suko just had her 60th birthday on the 8th, so I celebrated over the phone and sent her a gift. My 60th birthday is in October. My throat hurts, and so does my hip. So, I haven't been exercising for two weeks. I have been reading and painting only. Sometimes, Carol, we need to be slugs to energize for our next project. Sometimes our body needs to heal. I took a nice bath and applied a Lidocaine patch to my back and hip. Carol, you need to pamper yourself and don't feel guilty. The guilt hits many times, and I push it back.
Lisa, Egg is so entertaining. So, you need to forgive her for keeping your stuff.
Allie, the IV fluids are increasing your weight. Ignore the scale right now. The Sodium is keeping the water on your body.
M, are you able to bike with all that wind?
Well, I am going to bed now, talk tomorrow.
XO,
Mo in Mississippi
7 -
M, are you able to bike with all that wind?
No. First, I've been sick so I haven't been doing much of anything. Second, the wind is so strong that it would be dangerous - potentially blown across the road. Third, the wind makes the temperature cold.
The temperature highs here been about 12C (54F), which isn't too bad, but when the wind gets going, the "feels like" temperature sits around 0C (32F). Howling winds and a "feels like" temperature about 0 is not nice at all.
We do have bicycles indoors so when I feel better I'll use mine.

Morning, all,
After my thrift store run yesterday, I was able to get an hour of rest - since I was falling asleep sitting up, I didn't have a whole lot of choice, so I went and laid down. Helped a lot.
Today is a couple loads of laundry and quite a bit of caulking. Maybe a little trim work, if I'm up to dealing with putting up the corner pieces. Reasonably simple, but I'll have to find a saw and use an air nailer and compressor, and I don't know if I want to today. Just noisy and sawdusty and… nothing that sounds like any fun at the moment.
The picture is my thrift store haul - I still need to find some fabric that's in shades of country blue and a few more shades of cream to add to the stack.
There is probably 20 yards of fabric here all told, all cotton. Probably $150 new, as most are very expensive cottons. The whole stack cost me $33. These are some of my daughters' requested colors for her quilt. At this point, the idea is to make a Texas Star pattern, the one pictured here.
I might be going with English paper piecing, something I could work with by hand at night, but I'm going to try it out and see what I think before I decide. Because I've done so much crochet at night in recent months, I've got a daylight lamp right behind my side of the couch so I can see to work.
I'm up a bit earlier than I planned, but that's OK, I don't have to be anywhere or do anything at a particular time except figure out dinner later.
In fact the only thing outside the house that needs doing the rest of the week is getting my teeth cleaning on Friday morning at the dentist's office. Honestly, I'd cancel it if I wasn't very aware that I pay $20 a month for dental insurance. Plus I'd like to keep my teeth.
Speaking of which - Kim, that was a very insightful paragraph on dealing with your mother as she moves toward the end of her life. And explains my brother's struggles with my father toward the end of my father's life. He did put the old man in the old folks home he didn't want to go into, in the end, because he was afraid he'd set fire to himself or kill himself through food poisoning. He consistently ate mayonnaise by the spoonful and wouldn't put it in the refrigerator. In the south. Just no easy decisions.
Corey will be up rattling around any minute now - I need to check the weather and see if it's worth hanging towels and such outside, or whether to just throw them in the dryer.
Later,
Love y'all!
Lisa in AR6 -
Good early morning, everyone.
I woke up with a migraine. I had a dream about being raped by my uncle and trying to convince my family that it wasn't my fault. I don't know what brought those memories up. I felt dirty all over again. I took all of my meds and did a sinus wash. I got myself off of Benadryl, but I took one anyway. I figure it won't hurt every once in a whileLisa, I love that star pattern, and the colors will be rich for the fall. Lately, I've been feeling like I don't want to do anything on my days off, even though I know I need to wash the pollen off the covers on my porch swing. I need to power wash my porch to remove the pollen and dust. Next, I plan to put up lights to decorate for fall. No hurry yet. I make myself get dressed daily. I had planned to work from home for 5 hours, but I decided against it. This is my long work week, so I am going to take it easy. I have been working on my mermaid for my patient and my heart. You do have a nice haul from your thrift store run. Where are you going to find the blue material? Is there any thrift shopping online?
I hadn't been on Facebook for a while, but I wanted to include you ladies on my Facebook page. I enjoy reconnecting with friends from high school and some chosen family members from time to time. Also, my work friends. DH thinks I am crazy for being selective about who my friends are. He says select them all. I can't do that for my mental health. Just seeing my family members who bullied me in the suggestions for being friends does something to my mental health. Even some people from high school make me feel uneasy. My friend Baby Sukodoes not do FB at all. So I keep her posted about HS friends. So, I understand why you don't want to do FB. I had switched to IG, but that is something I follow for recipes, safety tips, and other interests, like true crime.M, I hope you feel better soon. Don't rush back to work too soon. Those winds sound worse than the wind in Chicago.
Kim, my mom, always threatened to kill herself when I was a kid and as an adult. Recently, as the POA, I was going to make her a DNR. In the doctor's office one day, she was lucid and said she wanted everything done. Now, I can not get a straight answer from her about that. I did put her in a nursing home for my sanity. She leaves the house and lets my dog out, too. It was a safety decision. I remember doing everything to save my dad, even though after the stroke he had, he told me that he couldn't live like that. I had to go by what my mom wanted done for him, even though they were separated for 38 years. DH and his sibs are making decisions about MIL now. Now that DD is maturing, I might be able to discuss end-of-life plans with both of my kids.
I know the glare from the computer is the worst for my headache, but sometimes writing about things that are bothering me helps. I have an ice patch on my head, and I may take Zofran for my nausea or go back to bed.
Talk to you all later,
XO,
Mo in Mississippi

Just last week, I switched from 3-ply to 2-ply. Better for our toilets and for some reason I use less. But weirdly, the 2-ply is slightly more expensive and there is significantly less choice. There are heaps of 3-ply and 4-ply choices, but 1 choice for 2-ply.
Grocery shopping
- when I was working, I didn't pre-plan meals a lot, maybe a day ahead. I drove by the Safeway every day and Walmart was close to where I worked so I could easily grab things. Now that I don't drive to town every day, I try to plan a week ahead and cook things I can eat three days in a row or throw into the freezer, and to save $$ on gas. I filled up the car the other day. Price jumped $.50 a gallon, so I paid $4.34 per gallon at the cheap station. WA doesn't have income tax so that's one reason for the jump, more taxes. Luckily the old Camry gets around 30 mpg.
I order basically the same things each week … slight variations. And occasionally, I walk over to the grocery store near work for a few extra things like fruit for my fruit bowl at work.
We have the fridge freezer and a small chest freezer and both are fairly full so at any given moment, we've got enough for about 3 or 4 weeks.
And delivery is free most of the time!
M, I hope you feel better soon. Don't rush back to work too soon. Those winds sound worse than the wind in Chicago.
I am back at work and putting in a full week this week. Two days to go till the weekend! I'm tired.
I have lived all over western Canada, including putting in 13 years in Manitoba. I used to think that Manitoba was one of the windiest places on earth. And then I moved to Tasmania. The wind in Tasmania blows all the other places out of the water!
We're having a little break right now and it's relatively calm. But we have more wind coming!
By comparison, here's North America with practically no wind … although I see that the UK has a bit of activity offshore.
On Facebook … I use it like a tool.
It helps keep me in touch with family and friends around the world. Saves from having to write letters.
It helps me communicate with the cycling world and bee world, especially within Tasmania.
It lets me know what's on around this area - events and things.
It entertains me a bit - cat pictures and cartoons.
