Where do you get the 1200 goal? Thats very low for most people unless you’re very short and/or very sedentary?

What made you decide on high protein / low carb?

Is this all recommended by a doctor, or some vague notion you got off social media?

I’m not trying to be a smart *kitten*. Sooooo many people come here thinking 1200 is some kind of magic number. OR, they’ve set their weekly weight loss goal so high that MFP has defaulted to the minimum calorie goal threshold permitted, which is 1200. You will never get a goal of less than 1200 on MFP’s setup page.

I eat super high protein, and tend towards low’ish carbs and fat, but, since I focus heavily on protein (highly active) that’s just how the other two pan out. Protein keeps me satiated and helps me maintain the muscle I’ve built. Carbs are my “engine” that fuel all that I do, so to speak. Fats, I know I get enough and don’t really care.

But can you share how you’ve come to this goal and this eating style?

In all honesty, if you’re just starting out, calories are king. Meet a reasonable calorie goal, and you’ll lose weight. I found that when I did, my macros also fell into place relatively well. Tracking my fats was what also showed me that protein kept me satiated. For others, it may be carbs or fats. We all differ.

To give you an idea, female, 58 at the time, started at 225+, pretty sedentary, started with a daily goal of 1470, and lost ten a month the first couple months. Ramped up my activity as I felt better, and at the insistence of dietician increased to 1700, and then at the insistence of a personal trainer, increased to 2100. I still lost weight consistently at 2100 (again, pretty active by that time).

I currently maintain at about 2400-2500 average per day at age 63, but now am highly active, thanks to revived energy from weight loss.

Unless you are really petite, or super sedentary 1200 is a myth. Fuel yourself! 😘. And don’t try to lose too fast. That’s a recipe to rebound, and regain all the weight and more.
