Walking Hadrian's Wall in 2026, (but practising in New Zealand 2025 ...)

Hi everyone. I'm CarolTyne. I currently live in Wellington (NZ) but I am originally from Northumberland in England. At the end of March 2026, I am heading home… initially for at least 6 months.
In the last 4 years, I have had some pretty major surgeries; two hip replacements and a spinal decompression. The osteoarthritis that is affecting my life so badly, is an ongoing problem for me. Exercise is difficult - comfort eating has become the norm. A recipe for disaster…
So here I now am finding that I have at least 30kg to lose.

Being a New Zealander for almost 30 years, has taught me many things. Observing the passion for their culture and heritage that Māori demonstrate constantly, has taught me to look at my own culture, heritage and history, and understand my intense love of Northumberland 'through a different lens'.
My goal is to walk the 135km (plus interest stops) of Hadrian's Wall in 2026. I'm hoping it will take me around two weeks - possibly less if I can get my fitness up to the required level.

To do this I need to eat well, and within my calorie budget, exercise more (daily if possible!) and utilise my passion for my true home, to fixate on and therefore stick to my goals.

I'm underway… but would love to connect with anyone with similar interests, either in New Zealand or Northumberland, or ANYwhere else come to that. It's always great to have a support team cheering for you along the way, and if I can return the favour, I will.
I'll be blogging the journey too as a way to record a year of chsange.

Gan canny folks… with great 'aroha'.

    welcome to MfP @CAROLTYNE

Oh, wow! That’s been on my bucket list, along with the Cornish coastal walk, Offa’s *kitten*, would love to do some the circuit in Nepal, and I read about great walks in both Japan and Slovakia (? It was around a lake, at the base of the mountains.) I’d also like to retrace Nancy Wake’s flight from the Nazis from France over the Pyrenees into Spain. So many wishes, so little time, lol.

I’d convinced my husband I’d be safe walking alone and had booked everything for the Camino de Santiago…for April 2020. 😬

He’s not a walker. I do enjoy walking and looking, but now I’m five years older and people just seem, I dunno, meaner? So I have to rebuild that courage to do things alone.

I love that you have such a cherished goal to work towards, and wish you much success in your efforts.

Please ask away here on the boards if you need help or advice. The folks here have been wonderful during my (large!) weight loss. It’s a great resource in the palm of you hands.

🙄 sometimes that’s not a naughty word and doesn’t need to be kittened. Let’s try it this way. Offa’s Dike?
