LESS Alcohol ~ September 2025 ~ One Day at a Time

Hit ‘post’ too soon!
I’m closing on 10 days of skipping the wine - seeing my green dots line up is very motivating this month.
Did some gardening this morning as the yellow squash and zucchini’s are almost gone. Pulled up two plants. But It was fun growing, picking and eating fresh grown vegetables all summer. Now I also have about 5 lbs of tomatoes to use - will make a few sauces and freeze.
May you all find your best solution - just for today.7 -
Thanks @Michieb125! I have a doctor appointment next month. So I'm going to see what I can do in the meantime. Last year my doctor prescribed me Naltrexone. And, if you've ever seen the commercial about Oar, it's Naltrexone. My pharmacist warned me that some people don't like it and recommended that I only take a half tablet at first. I researched it and found that one of the main side effects was tiredness. So, I waited a few days and decided to try it (a half of a tablet). It was horrible (at least for me). It took almost two days to wear off. So, recently, I decided to try taking a quarter of a tablet. The same thing. It may work for some but not for me!
I was a frequent flyer in the emergency department at our local hospital back in 2020 and 2021. Finally, one of the ER docs told me that they don't detox there. I didn't have Medicare at the time, but a social worker at my medical clinic tried to find me help. The closest place was 60 miles away. And, I really didn't need a 30 day program. After just a few days, I'm fine. The hospital did eventually medically detox me because I had esophageal varices (bleeding and vomiting blood). I was in the ICU for five days. I didn't drink for four months…I was scared sober.
Anyways, I will get through this, but it's hard. Have fun with the tomatoes 😀. And, thanks for the support!

@c_rimmele welcome! I know your frustration about no one noticing the weight loss. I find most people don’t notice especially when they see you every day unless you lose 50+ lbs. I’m sure you notice it, and I bet it feels great! Keep up the efforts!
@WestCoastGirl_7 I do feel better after 49 days AF. That doesn’t mean the temptation isn’t there though. Just now, I came to the thread to read because I am frustrated by my MIL and her sheer stupidity and wanted to go get a drink. I marked the tracker and came here.
I don’t know what advice to give you. I know you know it’s not going to be easy, and you may need medical intervention. You just have to make up your mind and do it. The only one who can stop you is you.

@Michieb125 I baked. 😉

@c_rimmele, thanks for joining us and sharing your story. I'm glad you felt comfortable and ready to give this support a try.
@WestCoastGirl_7, I'm sorry that you're not feeling well, but if it's different than in previous attempts, maybe you should go to seek medical care. You have my prayers. We're all pulling for you.
@Michieb125, thanks for the encouragement. I wasn't liking the numbers I was posting at the beginning of September. It's funny/odd how the littlest things can be motivating.

@NonnieDoiron 49 days AF is awesome! It seems like when I joined this group last summer you were struggling like me. Although you have no advice for me, it is reassuring to hear that you feel better. Many months ago, I did go back and read some of my posts. And, I remember that I even felt better even after one day AF.
Thank you @nbruns83!

@itladyee I'm so glad Lola is adjusting. She is so cute. From the last picture that you posted it looks like there are two puppies. But it must be a stuffed toy. You know me and my eyesight. Anyways, I'm trying to keep up with everyone, but sometimes it's difficult.
If I had a digital picture of my Doberman Four-by I would post it. He looked a lot like Lola. He was so small. His little wiener was touching the ground. But, he didn't stay small for long!

Spent the day at the ER with the husband. He was having what appeared to be stroke like symptoms during Church. So, fortunately, we had friends who took care of my kids while I drove like a bat out of hell to the hospital (20 min drive in 12) They couldn’t rule out a stroke, but CAT scan and blood work didn’t indicate a stroke, carotid dissection, or infection. So, they think possible cluster headache, small clot in small blood vessel, or trigeminal neuralgia. He’s been told to see a neurologist as soon as possible.
His best friend came to the hospital, and per his request took me to dinner since it was already almost 4:00 and I hadn’t eaten all day. We went to a brewery I had not been to before, and due to early Oktoberfest menu wine 1/2 off per bottle. Ya’ll! I was sooooo ready to pop a cork! Then, I looked at my watch and realized today marks day 50 AF. So, I ordered my dinner and water and just ate.
Now, we’re home, and I’m still thinking about it. I have to keep reminding myself 1) day 50 AF, 2) weight loss goals, and 3) weigh-in in the morning.
I think I may put on my pjs and put on a stupid chick flick.

@NonnieDoiron OMG! That's horrifying! I hope you find out exactly what is going on soon. Did they make an appointment for you with a neurologist? I would have no idea how to do that. I guess I would just call my primary care doctor.
And, I commend you on keeping your AF streak going…keep going girl!

@NonnieDoiron ~ Oh how frightening…. so glad all is well and you all are back home. Are they looking into what really happened? Glad you were able to keep your focus….
I will catch up tomorrow….

@WestCoastGirl_7 and @itladyee he says this morning he feels fine but stupid. I told him it wasn’t stupid at all. I’m going to remind him today to contact his primary and get the referral (he has military retiree insurance, so we have to get the referral before he can go). But it looks like all is well for now. I’m leaning towards the cluster headache theory because of all the stress he’s under between having to get a new PET scan and hernia surgery this week. I’m sure it’s too much for him.
In other news, weigh-in this morning was great! I’m down 12.4lbs so far!! I think I’m a little dehydrated, so I may end up being the same weight or maybe a little higher next week. But, I think I can safely say I am officially in the 180s! YAY!!

Had one too many Saturday. Ruined my Sunday. I'm done with the poison for a while. :)
Alcohol really messes with ones water weight! :(

So much is happening here!
@NonnieDoiron What a scare with your husband! Hopefully you are correct with the cluster headache theory! I know you'll make sure he follows up. And good job not drinking after that! That shows great restraint!
@WestCoastGirl_7 I think you should really consider doing a medical detox even if it is for 30 days. Maybe you could get some arrangements in place as far as balancing the checkbook and buy some paper plates and plastic ware so your husband wouldn't have to worry so much. Take care of yourself!
@itladyee That puppy is so cute! Enjoy the puppy years. Like, @NonnieDoiron, I think our girl is our last animal as well. We rescued her when she was 5 and we've had her for 3 years. She's wonderful, and I love her, but we started traveling more about 2 years ago, and I feel so bad leaving her behind. My youngest son is usually here with her or we board her, but I know she misses me because I'm her person and it makes me feel terrible!
@xbowhunter Ditch the poison! I'm with you on that one! I'm ready to take a breather!
@Michieb125 You're doing great with the AF days!
@Walela617 I love your determination to never quit!
@c_rimmele Welcome! Glad you're here. I'm trying to break up my daily wine habit as well.
@nbruns83 You're also doing amazing getting on track!
@Womona I know exactly what you mean about the aging hitting almost overnight. I'm almost 54 and I feel like the last couple of years have aged me way than a couple of years.
I intend to make today day 1 of a string of AF days. Time to do it again. Sigh.

@chicbuc, @Michieb125, @nbruns83 and everyone else that has been concerned. I just wanted you all to know I will be fine. I've been feeling better. I will be done with drinking in a couple of days. And, I agree with you @xbowhunter alcohol is poison.
I will be quitting for myself, but also out of spite. Marijuana is legal here. And for those that think it is harmless, I would disagree. My husband is addicted. When he is without, he gets very grouchy and not fun to be around. He keeps saying he wants to quit, but it usually doesn't last long. In our small town, the people voted not to have dispensaries here. So he has to drive 15 miles to the larger town. It's weird…there's only two state run liquor stores there, but at least 10 dispensaries. It makes me sick!
Back in 2021, the only medical insurance I had was ChampVA, which is insurance for civilians through the VA (my husband is a veteran). My provider tried to get me help, but I would have had to travel 60 miles to the north or 120 miles to the south. I wasn't willing to do that. Plus, I don't really believe in those programs. I had a friend many years ago that went through the 30 days and started drinking again a couple of days after she got out.
My provider at the time was a nurse practitioner and she recommended doing the taper method. Starting later each day and drinking a little less each day. She said that I could message her every day if I wanted. She also said that if my BP got high or if I had weird headaches to go to urgent care or the ED. Well, it worked. I wanted go that way again. But because my husband is a pothead now, he wants to go at 9 am. He says he wants to get it over with. In reality, he just wants to get high. To do the taper method, you need a support person who is willing to go to the store for you a half an hour later each day. So I'm on my own.
@NonnieDoiron I hope your husband is still feeling OK. There's nothing to feel stupid for. It's better to be safe then sorry. My husband is older than me. And one day, I thought he was having a stroke. I called 911. The fire engine, brush truck and ambulance arrived. The doctor in the ED told him he probably just had a headrush from smoking pot. That's something to feel stupid about. I shouldn't be talking about my husband. But, it just makes me mad. He's putting getting high above my health.
Sorry for the rant…have a good day everyone!

Late to the party but catching up.
@NonnieDoiron Congrats on hitting the 50 day AF milestone AND significant weight loss - Rockstar results!! I am starting to backslide with a little voice in my head saying "lets take a month off"…also I would have caved if my husband was in the hospital so I am really looking up to you - please keep leading the way for us!!!
@WestCoastGirl_7 there are options - can your husband buy 2-3 weeks' worth of liquor (bigger size, lower cost per ounce) and stash it and only give you X ounces measured out per day based on a schedule you and he agree to? May sound silly but when people and vendors used to give me loads of alcohol gifts for Christmas, I would give it to him to stash (out of sign, out of mind) and dispense (now we just give it away). Also perhaps make a big pitcher of ice tea or herbal ice tea, etc and plan to drink a glass every hour. Doctor's appt.'s can get moved up perhaps and who knows there may be new medicines that dampen the craving that would help. Been reading low-dose semaglutide has that effect.
I don't see myself drinking today. I have nothing to drink in the house. No reason to drink, so will focus on a nice dinner instead. Maybe make chai tea with milk.

@globalhiker I had deleted my account. I was getting frustrated. When I rejoined, I couldn't use my old username, but it's close.
I've talked to my husband and he is willing to help me with tapering. He plans on quitting the wacky tabacy too. But, he's going into town one last time.
The idea of stocking up and him stashing it away probably wouldn't work for me because I'm like a bloodhound…I would find it 😁. One of your suggestions I have also thought of and I think it's an excellent idea. I have rocks glasses that were my parents. I thought of squeezing a lemon or lime wedge in, add some ice, add a shot and then top with seltzer water (actually SodaStream with purified water) and have one every hour or so. But it never seems to work out that way. I really just want to quit…NOW! So, we'll see. I have enough in the house to last through tomorrow morning. If need be we will start the taper method. I think I'm just going to try to go cold turkey. I will be safe. I do have a prescription for Xanax and 100% unsweetened coconut water for electrolytes. When they detox you in the hospital, they give you benzos and a IV for electrolytes and of course monitor your BP. If I can get past Day 1, I will be cool!
I have read that low-dose semaglutide does help some. But I'm not sure if I'd be a candidate. I have no problems with blood sugar or diabetes.
Thank you for your concern. I'm very proud of you for your progress. Please don't go back…it's not worth it!
