Hello, my dears,
Barbie, thank you once more for leading us into October, one of my favorite months of the year weatherwise…
I might, however, develop a twitch if I see one more thing with pumpkin spice flavoring or scent. Every bakery item known to man, coffee, tea, candles, hand soap, incense… and that's just to name a few! 😲😂👀
Tracey - Your home just looks lovely! Hope you had a great time at your friend's, and that the time with your brother and other family is wonderful as well. Thank you for the pictures.
Evie - It was so good to see you pop up in that last week of September. The weight gain is what it is, darlin', don't let it keep you from posting. I love to see your posts.
Terribly restless night, no real reason why. I finally gave up about 3:15, and will take a nap in the afternoon if I feel the need. The only thing I must accomplish today is getting my son's birthday present in the mail. First I need to go find his address. I wrote it down somewhere…
For those who are new - some of us set goals, some don't - some post about them, some don't - some of those goals are very specific and some, like mine, are less number and more life-oriented.
My goals for September were:
- ✅Be lighter - As of this morning, I'm at 157, down from 166 on September 1. That was, apparently, a temporary weight gain. Yesterday's diuretic (for A-fib) really cut in, so I doubt seriously I'll be lighter than 157 by the end of October, but a girl can dream! 😂🐈⬛
- ✅Be healthier - I'm calling it a win, mainly because I didn't get worse. I'm kind of at incremental phases right now with everything. My thyroid levels seem to be better, I'll know more next week. My iron will be tested at that point as well, but seems OK. My bathroom trips are slowly inching down most days, and haven't, so far, tipped over into constipation or blockage. And, as noted, getting my weight loss down without losing TOO much has also been a thing. I have been getting quite a bit more exercise in with the house reno, up and down stepstools and such, which may well have contributed to the weight loss.
- ✅Stick to the budget - Yes! We got through buying the little house next to us and getting it demolished without ever actually going into debt earlier in the year, but it put a real dent in our cash reserves. We've finally recovered from that, eight months after the fact. We're not further ahead (other than the land), but we're at least back to where we were.
My goals for October are the same as they've been for years now:
- Be lighter
- Be healthier
- Stick to the budget
If you're new, welcome! If it seems we've known each other for years, many of us have, but we get new members of the thread almost every month. Some find what they need with this thread, and some need or want more (or less, sometimes, 'cause we can be a lot 😂).
If you feel we're the right group of health-oriented women, please, introduce yourself and sign your posts with what you want to be called, and about where you live, so we can keep the names reasonably straight. And drop into any conversation where you feel comfortable!
We do avoid discussing religion and politics, to make this a safe space for all concerned. We're trying to get healthy, and we know it takes everything in our lives to get there, not just the scale.
Many of us craft, sew, crochet, knit, quilt, and paint, whether on cards, canvases, or decor pieces. Again, still part of a healthy life! Quite a few have an exercise habit in place, with runners and bicyclists, and many others are trying to get one established.
Speaking of which, I did buy 25 different coat and clothing patterns over the last few weeks. Hobby Lobby has every single McCall's sewing pattern for sale for 99 cents, because the company is going out of business - and these patterns are normally $12 to $15 apiece. I think they had at least a thousand of them, and I went through the whole lot. Twice. Because I'm that girl. Should be fun trying some of these.
Time to toodle off and get to work on a couple things I have in progress… I tend to work on the two crochet pieces in the late afternoon and evening, while watching TV. Finally got the last piece I need to get going on my daughter's quilt, a diamond template. We'll see what I can accomplish…. :)
Later, y'all,

October is a beautiful time of the year! Thanks Barbie for starting us off this month! :)
Tracey ~ Your photos are lovely.
My husband is still in the hospital (day 10) fighting a severe lung infection! This along with his failing heart is not good. Praying for a successful recovery!

💓 Carol, Oh my, ten days in the hospital. Is the hospital close to you? Can you spend time with him? Do you have things to keep you busy and distracted at home?
😀 We are up early this morning which gives me a bit of time to do things before heading out for the long walk. Last fall and winter I waited until daylight to take the dogs out after breakfast but this year, I'm going out while it's still dark. They don't like to walk for too long no matter what the weather or the light, so I decided to have a plan that pleases me.
😀 Yesterday I skipped my usual 9AM Zoom meeting to go to the neighbourhood Fit and Fall Proof class. Its a professionally designed class of low impact simple exercises that can be done by anyone at any age or fitness level. The leader is a man who is a bit of a scene stealer in most settings but has the perfect personality to lead the class and maintain the momentum. Most of the participants attend regularly but the routines are easy enough to pick up immediately. Yes, I could do all that stuff at home, but I don't. I am a self starter and consistent walker but home exercise is something I haven't done consistently. Our clubhouse is less than a five minute walk away so I can get there easily, participate in the class, and be home in less than 90 minutes. Even so, Annie greets me like I've been gone for a month.
😀 Tracey, I love the pictures of fall in NB.
😀 If the rains holds off, I can do some work in the yard later, If not, there is always mopping and vacuuming. Yesterday I succeeded in changing the sheets without a dog in middle of the bed wanting to play.

September Accomplishments
(Not much this month!)
Physical Wellness
- Lost 11.1 kg (24.5 lbs) since the beginning of January. I did not lose anything in September… much less exercise than I hoped because I was ill at least half the month. But I maintained.
- Walked 51 km.
- Cycled 17 km.
- Climbed 230 flights of 20 stairs up plus landings at work.
- Continued Learn to Swim classes and learned how to do the freestyle.
- 16 hours of exercise ... only. 😕
- I also got quite a lot of sleep this month.
Occupational/Intellectual/Financial
- Worked full time in September - busy as usual. The pace is not slowing down. But I was forced to take a few days off … too sick.
Environmental/Social/Emotional/Spiritual
- Enjoyed the spring flowers - tulips and hyacinths
- Cycling Club work - mostly advertising stuff
- Bee Group Zoom
- Attended Candlelight Concert
- Home Office - got some sorting done!
- Did several Sudokus - but they were easy
- Coloured 2 pages
- Read 7 books
- Continued reading Bible every night
September Books
Read more than usual! That's what happens when I'm off work and resting.
5 of the books got 5 stars this month!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Only 2 books were rated lower at 3 stars: Killer Potential and Yellowface.

Thank you Barbie for bringing us into October. 😁 It's been a whoosh year for sure.
Carol - I was wondering how your DH was faring. Adding prayers for his recovery and (((HUGS))) for you. Hope your weather has been nice and you've been able to get out and enjoy a bit of it.
Tracey - where in NB are you exactly? Is that salt water in the photo? I'm not familiar the geography in that area. One of my favorite books is "The Shipping News" which takes place in Eastern Canada. Time to pull it off the shelf and read it again. Anyhow, have a great time with your brother and friend and family. I bet there are many changes that have taken place in the area since you were there last.
Mo - Your comments about your DH and his urging you to move to Chicago got me thinking. Taking Rosie to the vet yesterday was an ordeal, she hates leaving her house and yard. When I got her home, she was so happy. And I thought - it would be hard to move from here and would stress her so. This is her home and all she knows. And would stress me too, even though it's a ton to keep up with and maintain. So there would have to be a very, very good reason. I'm still grieving about leaving the farm, but it had to be done, DH couldn't keep up with it anymore. I know your situation is different. You have a husband who loves you and wants you close by, and you're a lot younger than me and used to change.
Melanie - did the kids bring back any new stock from Utah? Sorry to hear about the teacher's strike and your dwindling volleyball team. Are there a lot of farm kids on the team? My siblings and I weren't able to do sports like the town kids did. For one thing, the inability of my folks drop what they were doing to run to town to pick us up from after school sports. The other thing - we were needed to help with chores when we got home from school. A whole new world opened up when we got our driver's licenses and my dad cut way back on livestock.
That Windows 11 update - it doesn't recognize my printer/scanner at all and it sounds like I have to reload the driver, plus there's some other glitch I need to deal with at some point. I'll get AI to help me muddle through it or maybe just take it back to the computer store where I bought it and let them figure it out. Glad I have that el-cheapo reliable Chromebook. I need to get it cabled to the printer. For some reason the wi-fi connection was wonky yesterday. I don't print/scan that much to warrant buying a new one.

Carol- Prayers continue. Remember to care for yourself! He has a staff to help care for him right now.
Lisa- You are doing amazing!
Tracey-Thank you for sharing! Enjoy!
Mo- I hope today is a better day.
My focus this year somehow switched up. When I chose to give up nicotine in my vape, I had to let my concerns on weight go. Eating habits weren't bad, just really mentally trying to rein in the squirrels in my brain some and make them nap occasionally. I will say September was mentally a good month for me. Vacation didn't hurt!;) I have purchased new clothes for the body I currently have. When I lose the weight again I will box these up. My doctor say if they have to choose for me between some extra weight or nicotine, they will take the extra weight all day long.
So for October, I will continue the little tweaks that I've been making through the month of September. These include…
MakingMaking sure I have a very Bowl prepared and easy to grab. I have block cheese already cubed up in containers so easy to grab. I have raw vegetables chopped and yogurt dip ready for easy grab. And when necessary I have prepared meals the night before to make sure that we have them in the evening when we need them or that I have a good lunch.
PositivePositive self-body! My body can walk 5 miles with no difficulty. I can look up reach up and bend down with no problems. My body is very healthy for being 60. My body deserves good food, good clothes, and plenty of movement. After all my, my husband is not complaining.
I will continue to tweak habits and routines to make things easier both at home and at work. This includes putting details in my calendar such as when I change the kitty litter which isn't every week. When I change the CPAP machine which isn't every week those types of items. The weekly things have assigned days and I do pretty well remembering those.
I willI will continue to work on my stress levels by allowing others to have their deal with their own problems. Yesterday my sister-in-law made a snide comment about the fact that I was putting my Broadway dates up on the calendar. She said that I seem to want an awful lot of time off. Really coming from her?!? And that my ladies, is why I track who's at the shop with what hours.
Hugs! Welcomes! Congratulations! And Thanks!
Time for work! I have done this 3 times now. Kept hitting wrong button before saving.
Love,
Kylia in Ohio where i think the hummingbirds have left :(

Hello ladies!
I hope October finds you in grateful spirits.
Big hugs ((((((((((((((💖🤗))))))))))) to those struggling and dealing with difficult issues. Every gal on here is strong, that's a fact I know.
I spouted at my middle sister and ended a video call abruptly, (hung up). "Now You see me, ok I am done here"! Talking to her when she's drunk is like spitting in the wind. Had a difficult time sleeping, but finally did.
I am up again at 5 am though! Another gym day. My weight is still the same. Had a slice of Daves power seed bread, with butter, peanut butter and honey. If I am going to exercise this morning, I need gas in my tank! Sipping coffee, eating my 3 prunes and wondering if I will take my middle sister off restriction from Messenger chat. She had called me right back so I had clicked that. Knew it was to yell at me.
I have started sending husband cute gift ideas we NEED to buy Athena and Eli for Christmas! Also need to buy for the boys! Feeling the stress of it all, ticking away! I need to start a box for middle sons birthday in Nov. Then youngest sons birthday too during that month. I think I will make a batch of oatmeal chocolate chip cookies for middle son. He likes those. I have croutons (youngest loves to snack on those) and a big bag of bacon bits (the real kind) because he loves that in sticky rice.

My desk top computer is so old I can't use Window 11. I had my son help me get my photos off and put them into a Flashdrive. It was about the only thing I wanted to get off the old computer. My old document files are now on in read only. I did pay to have excess to them for awhile. Then I found out the company I was using was from China so I stopped once my credit card lapsed.
I have other goals such as getting rid of old record albums and clearing out our attic above the garage. I did clear out most of son's things and the camping gear. Next is to get rid of DH boxes from when he retired. I did find some old electronics that once I get a few more I will take into the recycling center.
I have a scanner for the old desk top but I find it difficult to use. If I need to scan something I take it to the library and then e-mail that to me so I can download it and send it if need be. They no longer store your documents in the Xerox machines that they use.

Carol - I'm sorry about your husband being so ill; I know you're worried sick.
Got the caulking done, other than the small amount that needs doing once the bit of new baseboard is laid this weekend. Got Johnny's birthday present all ready to go, off to the post office, and a quick run for the two things I missed yesterday. Didn't check my online list, and I knew better…
Might get my hair cut. Still thinking about it.

Hi all. Looking forward to a new month. Feel like I have been flailing the last couple of weeks. Eating horribly, having a drink most days in the evening. There was a time when I never drank unless a social situation. That’s going to stop this month. Also have been less than excited about getting back to weights after I was sick. Strange because usually the part of my day I enjoy the most. I did do shoulders, back, and chest yesterday and had the nice post workout high afterwards.
I weighed in at 168.8 this morning. I haven’t weighed in a while. Not sure where I want to end up. It will be more of a how I feel rather than a goal weight. I carry a lot of muscle, but also a lot of visceral fat. That is what needs to go. I want to pull on my jeans without a struggle and have those muscles I work so hard on to be a little more defined. My goals this month:
- Hit my daily macro numbers
- 10,000 steps a day
- Quit the evening drink
- My word is brave- to stop worrying what other people think about what I eat (I tell you I hate those food police who comment on what is on my plate). Also to stop worrying about what they think of me in general- getting easier with age 🙂
Tracey- beautiful fall colours! My favourite season.
Lisa- you are lucky to be getting mail. Canada post is striking now (seems like everyone is striking). We really depend on them rurally. The express carriers will not deliver on gravel so my nearest pick up is over 20 miles away.
Nice numbers on the scale 👍🏼Carol- Really hoping your husband starts to improve. I hope you are remembering to take care of yourself as well 💜
Machka- You go girl 💁🏻♀️ 24 pounds 💥 Inspiring! Thanks for the books- always looking for good ones.Lanette- No new horses from Utah, but ours sold well, especially once you factor in the exchange. Mo Brings Plenty, the bodyguard to the chief from Yellowstone was there. My kids said he was waving at my grandson in the crowd. Of course they were too cool to ask for a photo 🙄 I would have been all over it. My son says he just exudes coolness.
Volleyball team is a mix of town and farm kids. The pick up for rural kids can be a challenge, especially during busy times like harvest and calving. Some are old enough to drive on their own. I remember when my kids got their licenses- it was a relief. I found out that the girls have to pay $300 to play!!! That is for any school sport! On top of their school fees. Not doable for some families. And now the strike on top. We never paid to play and had our school supplies provided up until high school. Where has all the money gone? The same with health care. It’s “free” here unfortunately you can’t get in to get anything done and finding a family doctor is like finding a rare gem. I have been without one for 2 years since mine retired. They are either not taking new patients or require an interview to decide if they want you! Where do all the doctors go? Enough of my rant 😬Kylia- thank you for the reminder to treat my body with the respect it deserves. Physically I can walk anywhere, I am still strong, and I sure don’t feel 59. I just keep disrespecting it with what I am putting into it. It has put up with a lot of bad behaviour over the years yet it hasn’t failed me. I too will put that in perspective this month and treat it like it should be treated.
Here is a picture of my crew from a ranch rodeo this summer. I am just so proud of them and lucky they have come back home.
Hugs to all,
Melanie, Alberta

Gym was great! I did 1.50 miles in 30 min. I exercised my heart by doing a couple intervals of 5 min bursts of jogging. It got my heart rate up to 149/154. It was set at 3.5 but most of my walk was at a 2.9. Last 5/10 min was at 2.5 then 2.0. My BP when I did the machine showed me at 90/62. Then 76/63. The third time was 85/62. That's when I decided that the machine was loopy! My pulse was 120.
Listened to great upbeat music!
Aack time to pay bills. 🙃

I try really, really hard not to eat my emotions - but I have really been missing my mama the last few days… she died 26 years ago now, but there are still times it just swamps me like a wave.
But, instead of soothing that ache with sweets or salty food, I bought a pound of ground turkey (nearly $2 a pound cheaper than ground beef here), a jar of mild salsa, and some lettuce. Total cost $12.
After Mama was diagnosed with diabetes at 60, she stayed very controlled, dietwise, got down to almost exactly my current weight… Her morning meal was bananas, and her go-to lunch was ground turkey, cooked, then scrambled up in salsa, and eaten in a tortilla.
Bananas make me ill these days, but that burrito was one of the best things I've had in weeks.
Here's the backstory, though. Corey hates ground turkey, won't buy it, and makes his own rip-your-head-RIGHT-off salsa, as well. So I seldom have this meal, because it's just too much trouble, honestly. But I can take what's left and freeze it in my-size servings and I'll have three or four more lunches to go out of that, if not five, for a reasonable price, and a slightly less bruised-feeling heart.
Life is good.
Love,
Lisa in AR11 -
Barbie - that is so neat you can walk to that Fit and Fall Proof class. Definitely a benefit to living in your senior community. 😁Love that Annie is the welcoming committee. I looked up the class on YouTube and I see the National Council on Aging also has a lot of info on falls prevention. My balance is better since I've been doing the SWSY, I guess the leg strength is paying off there.
Kylia - you have done so well to stop smoking, very proud of you. I agree - health is so much more than what the scale says or the size of clothing hanging in the closet. My doc says she'd rather see me carrying a little extra than too thin. Good to have reserves. Sounds like you have a smart plan for healthy eating.
Heather - so sorry to hear about your heater. Glad the carbon monoxide threat was discovered and you are aware of the danger now.
Margaret - I could do my scanning at the library and also printing too if push comes to shove. I have resorted, in some cases, to taking photos of documents I want to keep a copy of with either my phone or my camera and saving them to .pdf files on the laptop so that's a substitute for the cranky scanner. I think there might be some kind of a work-around for the expiring W10, I noticed something pop up when I was in the midst of downloading and installing W11. I recall I ran XP for a while after Microsoft stopped supporting it, chances are I would have been OK for a bit still running W10. Evidently W11 has known problems with printers and Microsoft is working on updates and patches.
Rebecca - I just realized Christmas is what - 11 weeks away? Checking the budget and getting some planning done. You have your boys and the grands to figure out gifts for. I feel lucky I can get away with a few gift cards and call it good. I understand about your sis not wanting to get any more pets. They are kind of like always having a 2 year old to work life around. When does it eat. When do I have to let it out or go for a walk. Does it need new toys, etc. 😉 That little trip to the vet yesterday $68.50. The anti itch pills over $100 a month that she doesn't need yet. That's a lot of $$ for seniors on a fixed income whose pets run into chronic problems.
Melanie - love the photo of the cow-kids and grands! Do you folks raise your own hay to take the horses through the winter? We used to have a Canadian gal in this group, Joy, whose husband raised organic crops. Every time I buy organic lentils or some grain grown in Canada, I think of her. I live in a rural area of Southwest Washington state. We are also experiencing a shortage of family doctors and vets in our area. They all seem to be heading to the big cities where the pay is better or they specialize. Do you think you could set a human bone or stitch/staple someone up in case of an emergency?
Also, may I ask what your strength training routine is like? Do you have free weights/ankle weights? I just finished my Strong Women Stay Young routine. I did miss a day due to my lower back still complaining about all the weeding and yard cleanup I did last weekend. Cele coxib to the rescue.
Lisa - that burrito sounded great. How old was your mom when she passed away?
I just looked outside - three does of various ages are working on the apples under the tree by the chicken coop. And there's a small doe - likely a fawn that has dropped its spots - across the fence missing out on the meal. Life here at the wild kingdom, lol.

sad to hear McCalls is going out of business- Need to check around and see if Walmart will be lowering the prices on the patterns there. Hobby lobby is 20 min away(I know, not that far) but can't make it up there this week or weekend- work and class reunion. Maybe we can go up Monday.
Thanks for letting us know

Lanette - The burrito was awesome. Mama lived to 72. My father died six years later, at 79. It's one of the reasons I took Social Security at 62 - My genetics do not necessarily predict a long life. That said, my father smoked up until the day he died, and my mother had her first heart attack at 51, the day after she left him. Largely from stress. She had 7 more heart attacks and two angioplasties in the next 21 years, but still lived in her house until the day she died. She died doing what she loved - feeding the hummingbirds. They never knew whether she fell and hit her head and it caused the stroke, or the stroke caused the fall and impact.

For some reason I was thinking that Pix had a vet appt at 10 so I stopped there after work. Nope, it was 8:30. Now I remember Vince saying that he doesn’t mind taking her, but would Jess please make the appts later (he doesn’t like to get up early). Seems Pix has a lump and Jess is concerned that it’s cancer. Personally, I think she’s being somewhat of a worry-wort. Worry about it when it happens. Anyway, they did a biopsy. Well, I needed to stop at the dollar store anyway to get Halloween cards. Then stopped at Food Lion since I’d seen in their ad that shrimp was on sale BOGO. Butt he size I wanted was in the raw shrimp, not cooked so I didn’t get it.
Carol – praying for you and your hubby
Took Ganon for a walk, then went in the pool. It really is refreshing. Then cleaned the spa. Jess wants us to keep it open all winter (can’t happen)
When the cats were kittens (over a year ago) Vince drilled holes in the door frame so we could have a “door” for the cats. Well, it’s been over a year they’ve been in the whole house and the holes are still there. I’ve filled them in and sanded. Now to take the paint to Lowe’s to have them put it on their mixer to mix it up. I’m not sure I bought it there, but they said they’d do it for me. I’m thinking that this weekend I’ll go (will stop and get local honey, too) and then paint. Guess if I don’t do it, it won’t get done
Will go to the gym tomorrow and plan to do a spinning workout
Well, off to take Ganon for a short walk. Bowling tonight.

My brain squirrels were out of control today! I finally took a few moments to stop and type out a done list. That was more difficult than I thought, but helped calm the squirrels.
Time to rest the brain.
Hugs! Love! And encouragement from Kylia in Ohio

Ho y’all, it’s Amanda from Cali. I’m doing a Blue Zones (link below) 4 week challenge and one of the tasks is to join a group that supports each other through sharing, positivity and healthy habits. Looks like I may be in the right place. 👋
My goals are to workout (almost) every day, eat a (mostly) plant-based diet and find joy every day … even on the really bad days.
Happy October!! 🍁🎃6
