@springlering62 That dish sounds amazing! I’ve never had Moroccan food. Someday I hope to get the opportunity to try it! 😃

you know you’re likely a member of this group when the recipe says “8tsp” of butter or margarine, and you misread it as “6 tbsp”.
No wonder the biscuits were so darned good this morning!

@springlering62 you inspired me to search out 'Just for Two' cookbooks. I grew up with an Italian mom, so all my recipes are for 6-8 people, so there's always leftovers and always big helpings. I figure if I learn to cook smaller, I'll eat less. So, maybe I'll lose weight by reducing portions? 😄

The wife is away a lot this month, first to console a friend and now at a conference. I'm cooking for one. It's been a mixed bag, actually. Not because I don't know how to cook, but because I'm trying to be very efficient and things just aren't coming out the way I want them.
- Baked cod with onion and garlic: The onions got a bit too hot and they caramelized, overpowering the cod. The idea is to sidestep breadcrumbs, but make it flavorful. Note to self is don't rush it!
- Marinara sauce with ground beef on a baked potato: I used TJ's marinara as my base. It was too sweet for my taste and I didn't like it at all!
- Swordfish on a bed broccoli with chopped bacon: How can this miss? Swordfish was on sale at the grocery store. I also picked up a small head of broccoli and some pre-cooked bacon. I rinsed and steamed the broccoli until soft, chopped it up, added chopped bacon, and put the swordfish on top. Problem: I got the dirtiest, sandiest head of broccoli ever and I couldn't even eat it!
Tonight will be sauteed chicken tenders with baked squash. I have several squashes to choose from, including butternut, delicata, and some more-exotic variety my wife selected. Wish me luck, things can only get better from here!

My trainer was telling me during our session this morning, everyone on staff had to do an half day emergency and water training Saturday, even the massage therapists. She explained, if the alarm goes off, it’s all hands on deck.
I said it was overkill. She shrugged and said,”You just never know.”
I was swimming laps afterwards, while my husband did his aquafit class. I popped my head out of the water at the end of the lane to a big commotion. One of the aquafit participants apparently suffered a stroke climbing out of the pool.
All hands on deck, indeed. And they had thought of everything. Two people were on the other side of the glass wall holding a sheet while they laid her on the bench and worked on her. Other staff literally made a human wall around her in the pool area to shield her. The Cardiac Rehab part of the gym was Johnny On The Spot with the full panoply of equipment and monitors. The director’s job was to clear the hallway to the parking lot so EMS could get through with the gurney. There are no gawkers like gawkers in a gym that skews older. They did a great job creating privacy in a very open and public space. A pool deck, for heavens sake.
I won’t laugh or claim overkill ever again. They responded beautifully. Absolute kudos to the staff.

Had lunch with an old friend yesterday. She complained about weight gain and having to use a cane. I encouraged her to join this group and start tracking food intake or just reading the posts to get inspired to start moving, even with a cane! Hopefully she'll join, I'll check up on her later this week.

@BigDfromNJ : She will be welcome here.
My success in promoting MyFitnessPal and calorie counting in general by any method has been very limited. I have two close relatives who have been struggling with their weight. One is in need of losing 100lbs (by her report), and has a number of health problems, including back and legs. One year, at her request, I showed her how to use MFP and gave her a bunch of beginner's tips. A couple of weeks later, she texted me "how can you live your life like this?" She quit on the spot. 🫣 Oh well!
I've never really found it that hard to do for the months where I'm actively losing weight. It's much harder while in maintenance, or on travel where every meal is from a restaurant, or in many other cases where I trail off.

Oh, and let me add that I've had various MFP friends over the years, and aside from those met through the chat boards (like @AnnPT77 and y'all), they've all lapsed! In other words, I've outlasted everyone that I know "IRL" (In Real Life) who have used the platform.

Ladies! I’ll have you know, my latest friend request is in a tux and looks just like the Most Interesting Man In The World. In fact, it may be his stolen photo?
Oh, honey, take my money!!!!!

That's one reason I've come to strongly prefer the Community, something that was true even when we still had the friend-feed thingie. People who were my friends there trailed off and quit regularly, much sooner than I did. That, in itself, was discouraging.
At least in the Community, on threads like this one, there's a semi-regular set of people posting. The participation may rotate over time, but the thread/group keeps going. To me, not as discouraging.
I'm not sure I've ever had any IRL people as friends here on MFP.
I had the same experience others mentioned IRL - lack of interest. One person I knew used MFP for a while, had success in weight loss terms, but lost interest after 20 pounds or so . . . not the only pounds she said she wanted to lose. She was enthusiastic while it lasted, but it didn't really last. She was the only one.
Honestly - and I think this is kind of a downer - I think that in my entire life I've only known 3-4 people who had a material amount of weight to lose, lost it, then kept a decent amount of it off longer term . . . and I'm including myself in that 3-4.
I know a couple of people IRL who suceeded with Weight Watchers, one who simply cut back on calorie-dense foods then watched the scale (my own father BTW), and me, a calorie counter. I know some other people who lost small/moderate amounts, some who've repeatedly yo-yo-ed up and down through a noticeable range, and quite a few who always seemed to be talking about being on a diet but never seemed to lose weight.

I used to clean my “friends list” out every three months. If you hadn’t logged in in at least three months, I removed you, with a few exceptions of extremely active users that suddenly stopped and I fervently hoped they’d come back. Remember NorthCascades and the gorgeous mountain photos?
I’d add anyone, in hopes of helping someone, or likewise to pick up useful info for myself from a trusted board poster. I was surprised after a year of culling how consistent the group had become, and how few I had to remove.
The Newsfeed was the magic ingredient of MFP, in my opinion. You needed inspiration? Motivation? Checking your newsfeed over breakfast was more than enough “they’re doing it, so, so can I” oomph.
People would share photos of their walks, their dogs, their Strava circuit, talk about their grandkids or school (both teachers and students), My favorite was a riotous bodybuilding cop (talk about inspiration!) who used to share stories from the beat.
For a “service” app, that was a massive kick in the gut to lose those connections. I’m settled into my routine, but my anonymous ID-and-face-only friends kept me riding the wave of minding my eating behavior.I did use to have lunch occasionally with a lady who lives about twenty minutes away. Lovely woman, but she moved to the other app. She had to have to social connection, so we’ve fallen out of touch.
That’s the thing. You see new and returning users on here begging for connection and there’s zero, zilch. I’m not going to post the things here I shared there. I’m an over-sharer (ask my kids!). So many people are more comfortable asking questions of, and sharing trials with, a smaller, cultivated, trusted group of friends, than to the world at large here on the boards.
We also used to “out” scammers who’d infiltrated the group by friending friends of friends. That was handy, too.
MFP’s professed service is to help us lose weight and live healthily. How hard is it to maintain a community? Make it part of premium, or charge a separate charge for it. Just bring the damn thing back. It’s sorely missed and sorely needed.
And once again, if you have no intentions of doing so, it’s ridiculous to maintain the “how to add friends” threads, especially that monster thread at the top of this here board.

I've been getting the cute men with dogs friend requests. Whadyawannbet they're stuck in Weirdganistan and can't get home but if I'd send them $2000 we could be married.

@springlering62 : You're totally on the money. And, it's all about money, as the service is owned by private equity who's sole purpose is to increase it's value so they can sell it at a profit.
I'll say it again: they should look at Strava, the "social exercise" app and make MFP the "social weight loss" app. I don't think there's much to distinguish it from the crowd, otherwise.
*** It suddenly occurs to me that they may have done some market research and found out that some people didn't like the feed! Is that possible?

Even a brief delve into the boards at the time should have convinced them otherwise.
IMHO your best market research source is your market itself, which is best addressed via the USER boards.
The only time I’ve ever been asked my opinion about MFP was a recent (email) survey that wanted to know where I’d like my advertising placed.
I’ve had premium for four or five years. Haven’t seen an ad.
I have cancelled my automatic subscription renewal for next week. I’m going to tag along and see what happens before I put my money on the table.
Still no changes visible in iOS. I’m so sorry for those of you on Android. I can’t imagine how frustrated you are. The powers that be don’t realize what an integral part of our day this app becomes.

I didn't like the newsfeed. I tried, got some things out of it, yeah. But not enough. I didn't like it, and don't miss it.
To me, it was over-filled with cuties posing in gym mirrors who looked nice but weren't remotely close to my demographic or interests so had little to say that interested me; massive volume of auto-posts of people's workouts and "diary completed" messages; mythologies about diet/fitness that made me cringe; and more.
Yes, there were a few good, interesting people whom I valued. Yes, I could've invested more time in curating the friend set, but the reward didn't seem commensurate with the effort.
Overall, a discouraging, profitless time-suck. JMO, obviously.
In the right thread here, I'm happy to (over-?)share anything I would've shared there (and I did post there occasionally). I don't have much fear about this being "too public", personally . . . even though I know the Community is accessible to public web searches, and that I've personally shared enough personal bits and pieces here and there that someone could dox me if they were motivated. Meh.
MFP said too small a fraction of people used it to merit the increasing cost of maintaining the antique code. I assume they looked at total numbers of users, possibly some of them no longer active except for auto-updates of exercise from their fitness tracker, and decided too few people were actually actively using it. Having zero statistical information to evaluate, I have no opinion about that. I know that it's true that really old code costs more and more to maintain - let alone improve - as time goes on. But I don't have details about those effort costs either, so not much opinion about the cost/benefit balance, either.
I do know that some people here valued it highly, and I think it was probably a mistake to get rid of it without a close substitute. Overall, I think corporate MFP under any/all owners is going to put a priority on creating and promoting sexy-sounding new features (like the "photo estimation" and "meal plan" things) to attract new users, and ignore feedback from long-term users. The new features don't even need to be fully effective or well-thought-out, just appealing to the public. That's just how the quasi-free app marketplace works, and MFP is far, far from the worst example in various ways, IMO.
But MFP's changes over the last few years have a way of ticking off established users. Here's a thing, though: MFP, in selling advertising to brokers, can still claim a large X number of users, without revealing how many are actually using the app regularly, if they want to present themselves that way. They get revenue from ad brokers, and from premium users. I suspect the ad side is the more profitable, but I don't know.
As far as people on here begging for connection: Lots of them don't even respond to actual questions that were part of people in the Community trying to help them, after they actively asked for help. Yes, there are exceptions. But I don't have any inclination for my heart to bleed for the average "beg for connection". I think most of them are hollow begs, an attempt to frame things so that they have someone else - failed "accountabilibuddies" - to whom they can attribute giving up.
Yes, I'm cynical.

Chronometer looks suspiciously like MFP. They don’t seem to have a chatroom or a news feed, but their Reddit r/chronometer is somewhat active. (So is r/loseit.)
Maybe MFP took a look at this and thought “ack, we need to do something different!”

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who can't get IRL friends to join MFP. But perhaps that's better. I actually find it easier to discuss 'getting old' issues and take advice from folks I don't' know IRL! Probably something that stems from my childhood and being labeled 'fat' by people I did know. In any case, I'm enjoying this thread.
I've found the only "accountabilibuddy" I need is me. Keeping myself accountable works for me. Checking in with this thread is part of that!

@BigDfromNJ : I agree. No one cares what my weight is except me. I don't think anyone even noticed that I lost 20lbs this winter… not even my wife (although she was aware of it). All it meant was that my pants waistband went down about an inch. Same old dockers, same old shirts.
But, my blood pressure also went down! And, my performance cycling and jogging greatly improved!
