GLP 1

I'm a 67y.o. retired gal who needs to lose weight. At the very least 25% of my current 200+lbs. I have pre-diabetes and high BP. Would like to try glp 1, but unsure. Any suggestions?

    Hello and welcome!

Sorry to say I can't give any GLP-1 advice, though I know that many around here are using it. I joined MFP in 2015, before those drugs were in general use, so lost weight . . . I guess you'd say the old-fashioned way, just calorie counting while trying to stay mostly full and happy, and getting overall decent nutrition? I was also retired at that point.

I was 59 then, class 1 obese for my height. It took just under a year to lose around 50 pounds. I'm 69 now, have been maintaining a healthy weight since that initial loss nearly 10 years ago (not to mention around 30 pre-loss years of overweight/obesity).

From reading other posts here, it seems like some people are finding the GLP-1 drugs helpful, mainly for appetite reduction and reducing "food noise" (which seems to be constant obsessive thoughts about food?). Comments about both helpfulness and side effects vary somewhat, but I'm sure you can find threads here to read to learn about others' experience.

I feel like those issues weren't the biggies for me anyway. I'm more of a hedonistic eater, eating more than optimal back then just because food is enjoyable. Calorie counting was a good tool for me, because it helped me balance that pleasure in the moment - eating all the tasty food! - with my longer-term health and well-being (so my future self could be happy, too). Everyone's different, though, in how they've reached being overweight, and what will be the best tactics for reaching a healthy weight and (ideally) staying there.

Personally, I just focused on remodeling my routine eating habits in a more positive direction, using an approach described in this thread:

While that's what worked for me, I know that the same methods wouldn't work for everyone. After all, we're each unique individuals with our own preferences, strengths, challenges and lifestyles. I feel like finding the right approach - personalizing tactics - is important for success.

For me, reaching a healthy weight and staying there has been a major quality of life improvement. I hope you'll be able to achieve something similar.

    Best wishes!

I'm 50+ and 200+ and I've lost 20lbs in 8 weeks. Hunger completely goes away and I love setting a diet and being able to stick to it without obsessing. No side effects, but I don't realistically see a way (for me) to not eventually gain the weight back, and now medical scans are affected by this drug. I am sure other side effects will be discovered as time goes on.

Hi, I just started compounded GLP-1 today. I just turned 55 a couple of weeks ago and my goal is to lose 70lbs. I have battled my weight my entire life and I’m hopeful that this medicine will curb the “food noise”. I’m using the premium plus version of MFP and I am excited that my new Fitbit will sync with it. I plan to adjust my meals to snacks every 3 to hours, while focusing on macros primarily to help manage potential side effects and keep my water intake high as well. I’m also excited to use the meal plan option with MFP and learn the other tools available to help me stay on track and create a healthy, livable plan on this weight loss journey.
