Hi everyone, I'm new at this, also handicapped.

Hello,

I'm a newbie at this but I felt I had to something. I have become handicapped this last year with an unknown ( the Drs. can't find anything) illness. So,there I was with very limited mobility & the drs. wanted me to maintain my diet. Well the next thing I know I am extremely overweight ! The last time I was at the Drs. I was 212 lbs. I have an unusually large pot belly. I hate looking like this & I have tried to watch what I eat but to no avail. I partially blame the Drs. because they didn't want me to do anything until they found out what was wrong with me. I laid in a hospital bed & they would NOT let me do anything. But then I do lay blame on myself for not having the discipline to watch what I eat. Soooooo, with that said, here I am. I am 59 years old,5'10" . I hope by tracking what I eat & really try to concentrate on healthier eating. With limited exercise, I can do something about my weight. I can get on a treadmill but only on the 1 speed setting. I do have a weider pro & I have to get my mindset to do a regiment of strength training. I have NEVER been a workout kind of guy. So this is new territory for me & often I find myself lacking the discipline to work out. I use a walker to get around but I have heard that eventually I will be in a wheel chair. But,in what timeframe I have no clue. So, there you have it. It seems to me that the Drs. are more worried about my mindset more than they are a cure or plan of action. If there is one. I am doing ok as far as mentally. Sure it's different. But I don't need any anti-depressants or anything like that. I have plenty of reasons to strive to go on. A loving Wife, 6 kids, 9 Grand Children. So, I am not going to do anything stupid. I am still young (at heart) & have an immense love of life. I know you yopunger ones in your 20's & 30's will scoff at the young remark & think i am older than dirt, but that's ok. YOU will be here soon & let me tell you,it comes FAST !!! Anyway, that's the scoop. I hope to be a regular here so, say hello, let me know how YOU are doing. Don't be shy. I love meeting new people. Good luck to all. Sorry so long.

Hello and welcome!!! Boy can I ever relate to your story!!!! I have had 3 back surgeries and am limited at what I can do also. I do some walking and am trying out a fitness place for women called Curves. I have fought with my weight all my life and I am having a hard time losing my weight!

I know you can do this......start with baby steps like you have done and keep trying to improve a little very week/month etc whatever it takes. We didn't get here overnight and we will not fix it overnight.

Please feel free to check out my profile and add me if you would like to. I would love to encourage, support and motivate you along our journey. I look forward to hearing from you.

    Hugs

Welcome....first I pray that someone finds out what is going on with you. Must be frustrating, but you certainly have the right mindset!!! Feel free to add me as a friend if you want. Sounds like you are surrounded by a lot of support. And yes, although I am still young (I don't mind that word LOL) I know that life and health should NEVER be taken for granted!!!!! It can change in the blink of an eye. All the best to you and your family.

I might be one of those younger ones but I can still say hey and welcome and it is perfectly possible to loose weight even with a disability, my father has a debilitating condition and just by watching what he eats has allowed him to maintain his weight although it has all moved around a bit! It was his choice because he didn't want us to have to lift him if he got any bigger (and to be perfectly honest my mom and I couldn't even if we wanted to)! Support around you is really important and having your wonderful wife, children and grandchildren will help you maintain the focus you need plus its not as hard as you think just some very simple changes will help! Sorry for the waffle!

Welcome! I think the biggest thing about getting in better shape is to realize it's about the small victories and not the big ones. Everyday, strive to walk a litter longer, eat one less french fry, etc. Eventually, you will get to where you want to be. And if you find you lack discipline (like many of us do), I find that the "Success Stories" section helps. :)

WOW !!! I wanted to thank everyone for a fantastic greeting! I was surprised by all the responses you have given me. Once again,I thank all of you for that. In answer to some of your comments,YES,,, I have seen a specialist. I have seen about 5 or 6 neuroligists. I have had every test known to man. They have all come back ok,which is a good thing. I am NOT complaining about that at all. BUT,,, there is something. I was at the Cleveland Clinic for months & my Dr. threw in the towel & told my Wife that he has run every test that he could possibly run. So he said if we wanted to see someone else, please feel free to do so. Well that made her angry & we found another Dr. at University Hospital. He has run all the tests that he knows too. Now he is doing retests.
All in all,I have had ohhhh maybe 5 Drs. My Daughter gave my Wife & I this web site & so far we are very impressed. Not only tracking the foods we eat & exercise. But, the amazing thing to me is all the things we eat in a single day is something !! You just don't realize what foods you eat in a 24 hour period !! I think by just making one realize what we eat & the amount we eat is a rude awakening by it's self ! This is a great web site & we are extremely excited to join & be made aware of what we are doing as far as the do's & don't's go. I have not figured out how to navigate around this site as far as adding you as friends. But,I will get the hang of it eventually so please bear with me. Oh & one other thing,,,,,. I have lost some motor skills so if I misspell some words, please overlook them. My typing skills are horrible. It is hard to get my hands & mind in balance. From what I understand is that sometime during the night. My brain short circuited causing me to forget certain things. Such as walking, motor skills, speech, vision etc. I will check out the success stories. It will be a great inspiration. Thank you all once again. Young or old,we are all here for the same reason. I think that it is a wonderful tool for all of us to eat healthier, feel stronger & live our lives the way WE want. Please, feel free to keep in touch. I can't really go anywhere & am stuck in the house all day. So, this is my avenue to be social. Smile, keep your head up & good luck. gee, I keep writing books here. Sorry so long. Again.

Hi my name is Diane and I'm new here as well, I am very limited in what I can do for exercise as I have a walker and due to falling often they really don't want me walking that much. I try to walk even if its back and forth on my deck which I will do for about 30 a couple of times a day. I wish they had suggestions on here for people that are physical disabled for some exercises that may fit in with our disabilities. I am eagerly await water therapy and water aquatics since its low impact. But they don't have anything for that on here to mark in for exercises. So I can't tell what I'm burning or not burning, I look as every little bit of exercise is better than none but being able to track progress for these things would be helpful. Thanks
