How do you guys stay motivated?

The first week I started I lost 4 pounds, the next week three. Since then I have been so proud of my self that I felt I didn't need to work as hard. Now for the past 3 weeks I've gained and I have seriously no motivation to keep going. I feel like I have failed, even though I have still lost 5 pounds from where I started. How do I keep this up?

I think for me one of the things that keeps me motivated is feeling in control. I keep logging even on days that I do poorly so that I know what I am eating and how much I am exercising. Also I know my pals here will want to see that I completed my diaray and done my exercise.0

Celebrate those 5 lbs! In fact, go buy 5 lbs of sugar, or just carry a 5 lb bag around the grocery store while you shop. You might be amazed at how heavy that is. Then think, that's what you're not carrying on your body anymore. Think of how much less stress that is for your body to be that much lighter. Sometimes a visual/physical motivator helps.
And maybe you need to be doing something fun for your exercise? There's no way I'll stick with something if it bores me. That's why I spend most of my exercise time outside...walking, beginning jogging and riding my Trikke. I love being outside. It feels more like play than work.0 -
well great job on getting started! but ya gotta keep it up its hard work the whole time, and even once u make your goal its hard work to maintain, dont get me wrong things get easier once you get used to them and once you get into the habit of being "healthier"....but for your question my motivation is the mirror, i never use the scale to judge myself and never rely on others, i look in the mirror and see a fat *kitten* and i wont be that fat *kitten* anymore...but thats just me, and i hope you find YOUR motivation cause it different for everyone and i wish u luck in your journey to meet(mmmm meat) your goals0

I watch Biggest Loser! Seriously I pre-record it and then when I need to I sit and watch an episode. I know that sounds daft, but losing weight is really bl00dy hard work, and if I don't persevere I will end up like they start out (no disrespect meant) and it will be even harder work. I want to take control now!0

I am going to be completely honest... losing weight is the hardest thing I have ever had to do... Since March 2010 I have lost 50 pounds! That sounds like a lot but that means that I have lost that is an average of 1.5 pounds a week. But honestly I went months without seeing and change in the scale unless it went up. It was not until recently that I decided for myself that now I am doing it for me.. I am going to get healthy whether it means losing weight or just getting healthy. I have stuck to it for the most part but I have had my weekends or weeks that have set me back but those are the times that I want to strive harder and work harder because I am truly not happy with my weight and the only one that can change that is me!! No one else.. they may be able to support me from a far but it all comes down to what I want.
I recommend starting small maybe start with two days a week going to gym.. cut your calories to 1200-1500 and be strict with yourself with your calories.. just don't cut anything out. Dont go on a diet that cuts carbs or sugars completely because once you go back to them that is when your body will absorb it all back and all that hard work will go out the window.
Keep a journal or food.. feelings... ups downs... it will help to reflect back on it!!!!
I hope this makes sense and helps!!0 -
first of all, congrats on your progress so far!!!!!
In the past, I've run into the same trap as you...seeing progress and thinking you don't have to work as hard and then the weight gain happens and all of a sudden you're back at square one I call this the "I'm cocky now because I am starting to look gooooooooooooood" phase lol. To avoid self-sabotage, I started my own private blog, where on my 1 month anniversary of logging/exercising and when I did my weight/measurements I wrote down what behaviours worked for me in that month. I also used the MFP reports to tell me what % of the month I spent exercising/eating well because that will mean I have to duplicate these for this month in order to keep the loss coming I think one thing I've realized is to lose the weight, you have to be consistent with your behaviour...of course until i hit a plateau, then I will re-examine
On a day to day basis though, I really feed off the status updates of my MFP friends...I have a bit of a competitive nature so when I see my friends (such as you LOL) log wicked calorie work outs, it pushes me to go and do the same0 -
It is so hard to stay motivated. Congrats on what you have accomplished so far! One thing I have done is to keep a rolling list of goals for myself. It is a list of various weights, in descending order, that have some meaning to me. So some of the numbers on the list represent percentages of weight lost (10%, 20%, etc), some are absolute numbers of pounds lost (5 pounds! 10 pounds! 15 pounds! 20 pounds!), and some have some emotional significance, such as the weight I was when I got married, wore some special dress, finished graduate school, etc. I also noted the dates on which I met each of these goal weights.
I'm now reaching maintenance, but when I had difficulties with plateaus or gains, I looked at that list constantly. I kept it on my phone, and would look at it every time I took a break at work, when I was going to bed, etc. It made me proud to see how far I had come, and made the process of digging in less daunting when I only had to think about trying to reach the next mini goal in the next week or so.0 -
Celebrate! But not with food or laziness....
Be honest with yourself and your friends. I started blogging. No one reads my blog, but it helps me to read it and I think it helps me to admit my weaknesses and put myself out there. Watching Biggest Loser was definitely motivating to me, I also like the show Heavy. If those folks can lose 100 lbs, I can lose 50!!
I think the important thing for me is to do it everyday. I see my friends that have logged for 150 days and have lost 60 lbs, and I know that consistency and accountability are key. Reading other people's blogs and success stories is also good....These are some of the ways I stay motivated..
Now, the trick for me is keeping the weight off. See, I did this once before and was smoking hot for all of a year before I started slowly gaining it all back, +15!! I think I have to find the root of my overeating, even though I have no real clue how to do that....
I also have a few friends on here that I have quite a bit in common with. PMing them with thoughts I may not share with everyone can be a sort of peer to peer counseling and can be useful to some ;D0
