Just reading a comment stream from one of my friends who asked, what exercise tonight? Gym, Cycling, weights etc...

One answer was go join a random class at your Gym...

I though to myself, that's not a bad idea, could be fun!

Then I thought, actually I would be a little intimidated to join what is largely (at least at our Gym) a female dominated activity...

Don't get me wrong, I'm not intimidated by the girls! It's just I would not want to be thought of as the middle age guy at the back of class and an unwelcome presence.

How many of you Guy's go to Fitness classes? How did it go when you first joined the class? Any problems?

As a part of the "majority" I can say that we welcome guys in the classes. Do it! :-)
  • I'm not a guy but I thought this might help. I took a kickboxing class which was ALL girls until this one guy showed up. Nobody really said anything. He did the class like the rest of us (perhaps even motivated me to keep up) and all the girls wanted to talk to him after about how they thought it was awesome that he (being a guy) came to a fitness class. I mean some ladies want to meet men at the gym as well.

There are guys in my zumba (dancing aerobics) class at the gym and they are not at all an unwelcome presence. If anything, it's a motivator for me to try my hardest!

If I went to classes at the gym, guys would NOT be an unwelcome presence. The more the merrier!
  • i do the classes at my gym, i have a great time and they are great workouts....of course there are the ladies that look around and wonder "why is this guy intruding in MY class" but most the people/ladies dont mind, and most of them are nice...but i dont care what they think and do what i want...there usualy isnt many guys in the class maybe 1-2 including myself. if nothing else i want them to be bothered by me it motivates me to work out harder than them and show them up, and its a drive to to see them doing so GREAT and im like gah just 1 more minute! if they can do it i can do it! not that i think woman are not as tough as guys im just sayin its never good to be shown up by anyone much less a girl! the girls in my classes are super fit and can run circle around me but they usualy encourage me and will help me pull through those last grewsome reps.

There are guys that come to my Zumba and my Yoga classes. They are always welcome and infact they tend to make Zumba a bit more fun.

I remember in my younger years we finished our TaeKwonDo class and my instructor told me to stick aorund and do the cardio kickboxing class he was teaching because all the girls would be there, then he said, but keep your kicks low. At that time I had just received my first degree black belt and was bulletproof LOL ...ahh young and dumb.....So the class started and when we incorporated the kicks I of course put em up over my head ignoring the wisdom of my instructor....well after about 15 minutes of non-stop kicks I noticed my kicks were about knee level, then slowly declined to just barely raising my blood filled legs that felt like tree trunks!
I learned to be humble quickly but was so glad I did the classes and you will find classes you never dreamed of trying and love them too!

When first started Bodypump about six years ago I was the only man in the class. This changed quickly to two or three and then became six or seven (out of twenty) I was always made to feel welcome and really enjoyed it. Whilst I rarely do it any more I am always made to feel welcome when I return

 Ok, I'll try a spin class first... The instructor is always trying to get me into that class anyway
