I'm handicapped and need to lose 20 lbs.

Hello. I would like to lose 20 lbs. My daily goal is 1200 cal…which I've been doing the last few days. I'm working on balanced meals. I am wheelchair bound. I've been trying some chair yoga…not real successful as I'm limited with my arms. Any suggestions would be so very appreciated. Need help with meal prep, snacks, etc. I'm very limited with cooking. Thankyou!

    Hi, welcome :)

Sometimes single serving or convenience foods from the grocer can help, like a whole pre-cooked chicken can be used with a bagged salad kit or to add in a can of soup. Things like cheesesticks and single serve bananas or tangerines that are easy to peel/open.

For chair exercise, Sherry Zak has a nice range of videos online at utube with a variety of movement, some are briefer, and all are encouraging…

Glad you are here - keep at it!

    — also, you might check out the challenges posted on MFP by groups/people over in the Challenges forum. It's a good place to find other people who are active and working on these kinds of things.

actorgreen Welcome! I currently have limited mobility and it makes a huge difference when trying to lose weight. 30 lbs may seem like not a lot to lose if you’re able to go running or do aerobics but when you can’t stand or weight bear it’s definitely challenging. I would tell you what I gave to tell myself daily. Keep making good choices and control calories in. Yakkystuff thank you for the video suggestion. I can’t do a lot of seared exercises due to lower back issues but I can do something.

When we use a video online, we get more suggested videos, and also, can search for specific kinds, like 'wheelchair exercise'

I like a variety - of instructors, styles, lengths, tools, intensities.

When I find ones I enjoy that help, I bookmark them.

Physical limits, are important to respect. Our current abilities and goals change as we change.

If possible, Physical therapy can help us find a starting point and goals, and help us to establish an exercise routine, and go from there.

At points, water movement has helped a lot. Even with this, a Physical Therapist can help assess and give appropriate exercises.

Anyway we approach movement, it can help us… so keep at it, it all is about you, your needs, for you and by you… and an assist for our bodies.

Food? Same... worth it to try, find what helps, do that…

Our personal preferences, what is available to eat is worth exploring - there is a world of flavors out there and 1,000s of foods/ingredients and products to try, especially through the year.

Can eat the same thing or include a variety… just so personal, that.

Also, the mental - doing positive things to help ourself, like talking here, reading and learning about these things - can help us feel empowered to keep trying and keep doing - something every day! Forward...
