Hi everyone,

I'm Jenny. I am a 31 (almost 32) year old wife, mom, special ed teacher, daughter, etc. etc.....I have been chubby all my life. I am tired of being chubby - ok - obese now. I have been using MFP for the last 6 months or so, and have finally made it my mission to track everyday, all day, and it is really helping me now. I have lost 12 pounds using it and need to loose about 88 more pounds. I keep thinking in 1 pound intervals. I used to think larger numbers, now, to loose a pound, is a good thing.

My husband and I recently bought p90x and want to start it. I am scared to. I am soooo out of shape I doubt I can do 5 minutes of it consistently. But I'll try it.

I am interested to learn about the Zumba fitness DVDs. It looks like so much fun. I wonder if anyone out there is really having as much success as they claim to on the commercials?

Well, that's me, in a nutshell.

Hi and Welcome! You are correct slow and steady wins the race...so keep up the great work! :) I have P90X, but just didn't care for it much.. I do like some of the workouts, but never completed the whole thing. However, I do love Turbo Fire and Chalean Extreme.

Good luck with P90X! You can do whatever you put your mind to!

Great job starting. That was my big thing. I kept putting it off. Don't worry about doing 5 minutes on your equipment. Everyone starts out slow and you have to start somewhere. You won't improve unless you start. Just make sure you log ALL of you food and exercise and you'll start seeing results. Don't expect any huge weight loss. Just as it took a while to pile on the weight, it will take a while to take off. Keep up the good work and friend me if you like.

    Hello, and welcome!
Great site, lots of support. I am sure you will get answers to any inquiry you have.

please feel fee to add me.
  • Hi Jenny and welcome!!! My advice is, choose what you like to do and what suits you best, one particular exercise does not suit everyone. The main thing is that whatever you choose has to be interesting and liked enough for you keep doing it over a period of time. Good luck and we are here for you

Hi and Welcome! I love the forum and I am trying to be good with my logging too! I just dusted off my P90X and started yesterday, no I can not do everything they do but I modify a lot and do fewer reps. Like they say "keep pushing play". Eventually I will get stronger and will be able to do more, but I will not get there if I do not start! You can do it too! I will be your P90X buddy if you want me to.

In regards to the Zumba, I do not own the DVDs but I have done one and have taken classes and I love to dance! It will probably work if you stick with it. But since you already have the P90X why invest more money on a different work out? Unless you really hate it, then I would look into perhaps trading you P90X for Zumba on craigs list or something like that.
  • Great job on the amount of weight you have lost. I use to do the same thing and look at weight drop wanting it to happen in big numbers when it comes off. But i have also changed that and get excited if even the 1 pound drops off, Its that much loser. About the p9ox i have never done that workout before. But i am a licensed zumba teacher and Love it!! I know alot of people are scared to try it because they think they are uncoordinated but people dont pay attention to others. Its a time to let loose have fun and workout at the same time. The more you let loose ahd shake it the more you burn.. Zumba is a VERY good workout and you burn alot of calories. Its cardio and workouts your entire body. I know people who have been going to my class have drop the weight and inch. :) You will def sweat your butt off during the workout.. Good luck on ur weight loss journey and give the zumba a try. Youll love it :)

welcome. tracking your food will help a lot. also, put your top 10 things you HATE about being overweight on your profile...and read that daily for your motivation fuel.

as for P90x, I've never used it for a variety of reasons. at first, I didn't think I was fit enough to contribute enough to the series. then, after my own exercise routine improved my fitness, I realized that I just don't like an organized workout program that requires 60-90 minutes 6 days a week. I have too much going on and would find it difficult to commit that much time to exercising that often.

as for exercise in general...first, you can lose weight without it. your food/drink will dictate fat loss more than any exercise. however, exercise does have several benefits and I encourage anyone to become more active by finding something you enjoy doing and that fits within your lifestyle. for me, I discovered HIIT and I love it. I do a variety of sprint intervals 2-3x per week, with each of those work-outs lasting 30-45 minutes. on 2-3 other days per week (I usually work out 5x per week and rest/recover for 2...recovery days are important), I will do 1 or 2 resistance circuits of roughly 20 exercises with little rest between exercises and just 1 set each (roughly 30 minutes).....and on the other days, I will either jog or bike.

examples of sprint interval HIIT that I do:

    1. jog for 45-60 seconds, sprint for 10-15 seconds, repeat for up to 20 intervals.

    2. sprint for 10-20 seconds, rest, repeat for up to 20 intervals.

    3. sprint for 10-20 seconds, do a bodyweight exercise, rest, repeat for 6-12 intervals each with a different exercise.

    4. do a shuttle sprint (a/k/a suicide drill), do 4 bodyweight exercises, rest, repeat for 3 additional intervals with different bodyweight exercises in each interval.

the key to successful HIIT training is to go all out during the work interval, and to rest until your heart rate drops during the rest interval. if you're not going all out during the work interval, you're not doing HIIT. every sprint I do, I mentally tell myself that I have to bust it to achieve max success.

do not do HIIT on consecutive days. and when you start doing HIIT, I would probably not do anything else in between for a few weeks. if you decide to try sprint intervals, make sure you stretch out your hamstrings, hips and calves.

you might also try the exercise circuits taught by Zuzana on www.bodyrock.tv. excellent workouts in a short period of time....and she usually shows modifications that you can do.
