To buy or not to buy?

IIm contemplatiing buying a treadmill.

I enjoy walking/jogging but I dont feel safe running alone in my area and since the sun sets quite early, I'm not getting much exercise time outside at the moment.

A treadmill might solve my problem, but would it give me the same results?

Have any of you had any experience of weight loss with the treadmill?

I also need to incorporate strength exercises at home. I've just started with lunges and squats...

Any advice?

Thanks!

I have been wanting one too. I really want one that is motorized and can collapse to be out of the way.
I have an elliptical right now that's on its last legs.

Buy a membership to a gym. Try the treadmill and see how long you will stick to it( my friend bought on and never uses it He used it twice).

A gym is FAR cheaper and if you don't like the treadmill, there are plenty of other things to try.
  • Personally, I've always failed when it's come to having exercise equipment at home. I've bought exercise bikes, DVD's, balance balls and trampolines and they've all become fancy clothes hangers or just clutter. So I've decided that exercise for me means getting out of the house and doing something. But there are lots of folks who've had great success sticking to a routine at home.

if you can afford it and think you will really benefit from it, do it!

I say buy it.....my brother is training for the NY marathon and he said he would be lost without his treadmill. Sometimes he gets home so late, the only running he can do is on the treadmill.

I enjoy running on the treadmill from time to time.

I've used an elliptical and it's my machine of choice. Easy on the knees, and great for HIIT.

    Pros would be convenience, safety,

Cons would be the initial cost I guess.

But if your concern is running alone/outside at night, I'd def say get one. I tell my friends who've gone away to college/university the dangers of being alone at night, bad things happen at least once or a twice to females near campus.

There's tons of body-weight exercises you can do at home, all with easy to hard variations. If you don't have weights, things like cans, water jugs, backpacks full of books, etc. can be used. You can do virtually any gym exercise or a variation at home, without purchasing any equipment.

    Good luck and be safe!

I love my treadmill! Easier on the joints than running outside, and there are no excuses not to work out when it's raining/snowing. As for strength training, invest in a couple of handweights (most are between $5 - $10) and get a good video like 30 Day Shred. Welcome to your new home gym!

I love my treadmill. I've had it for just over 2 years and it's never once been a clothes hanger or gotten in the way. It's in my basement in front of the tv- it folds up and moves pretty easily.

I also have workout programs (from Jillian Michaels) that make it mindless. It increases in speed and incline on its own- it's beautiful!

Check Craigslist or Ebay. You can find some good deals there. Good luck!!
  • if you are in the UK the company listed below hires out gym quality equipment... that way if its not for you, then it hasnt cost you vast amounts of money buying equipment that ends up being used as a clothes rack!!!

I run in the dark with my massive dog! People seem to leave me alone, even crossing the road when they see us coming!

I love my treadmill being at the house. It makes it very easy to just get up a little earlier in the morning and go for a run before work. And yes, I have lost 33lbs so far using it 5 days a week

I prefer to run outside but in winter I use our treadmill all the time. My husband prefers to run on the treadmill so he uses it year round. We spent less than $1,000 to put a workout room together in our basement and drop our gym membership. We have a treadmill, elliptical, weight bench, punching bag and stuff for yoga. If you know you will use it it's a good investment and saves you money in the long run.

I used to think I really wanted one, then I learned the sad truth. I freaking hate running on the treadmill. I love running outside (I have a big dog) but man, running on a treadmill is boring and painful.

    i think that's a yes then!

Gyms here in South Africa expect you to take a 3year contract and I haven't been very good at going in the past.

So a 2nd hand treadmill will actually be A LOT cheaper.

Thanks guys, going to keep my eye out for one.

I love my treadmill. I'm a big fan of working out late at night (like 10PM-midnight) when the gym isn't open, so on days when I don't go to the gym, I always use my treadmill. It's also set up in front of the family TV, so mindless entertainment on streaming video makes it easier.
My parents only spent about $700 on our treadmill and we've had it for 7 years now. And it's been getting used pretty regularly since then. I wish I remembered the brand (I am at work right now), because it's also 'compact'-ish when it's folded up and doesn't take up too much space!
