Weird Burnt Smell

Hi all,

I've got a bit of a random odd issue. I've recently noticed an odd burnt smell that seems to follow me around. I've asked close friends if they can smell it, and none can. I tend to smell is most after a hard work out or first thing in the morning. Am I going mad? I've left my food/exercise diary open in case it's something
I'm eating.

Any advice or mentions of a shared experience would be great.

Thanks

H

I would talk to my doctor if I were you, it could be something neurological

Burning so many calories your on FIYA!!!
  • Yeah I have that too especially after a cardio session or a marathon weight training session. I don't think it is anything to worry about unless you like the fat.

Could be a lot of different things-

You could have something in your nasal canal causing that smell to be repeated

    It could be neurological

It could be something environmental like your clothes with your dryer or washer

It could be something to do with your vehicle or other environmental stuff

Rules those out then talk to your doc !

I don't know if it's the same thing but a few years ago, I lost my sense of smell and taste after I had a terrible cold/sinus infection. Then after awhile, all I could smell was a burnt smell 24/7 everywhere I went. I went to an ENT which resulted in sinus surgery. Have you had any colds/sinus problems?
  • I started smelling something like that as well not long after I was diagnosed with Diabetes type 2 and started taking medicine to control it. If you're obese like I am, then you need to go see your physician and have your blood glucose tested. You'll be asked to fast from 11pm the night before and go to him in the morning and they'll do a simple blood glucose test by pricking your finger with a lancet and seeing the results. Takes less than 30 seconds.

If that's not it, it's a symptom of something and your doctor needs to know. Either way- go see your doctor.

I have read a couple of places this is common in runners due to the body attacking the muscle to a source of energy. Google it, i am sure you will find something.

Are you on fire? That usually causes a burning smell, but not always.

Yep, it could be the ammino acids breaking down in your body. Try increasing your calories to prevent your body from running out of energy

One of our friends smells funny when he's on no-carb diet. I'm not sure if they are the same smell. Just a thought.

I get it, you need to drink a recovery shake or drink. I get it bad, its gone away since drinking a recovery drink after big work outs. It's pretty common I found out from my Dr.

My cousin Buku spontaneously combusted one time. I told him not to do that to the witch doctors daughter, but he never was a good listener.

Thanks for all the replies. To answer a few questions:
    - I'm not obese, I'm 169 lbs at the moment and 5ft5 tall
    - It's not my washing machine, clothes etc as my partner/friends can't smell it
    - I have not used new soaps, creams, washing powders etc
    - I did think there was something in my nose (and trying not to sound nasty) but it's clean and there is nothing there.

Nothing about me in the past 7 weeks have changed apart from my diet and exercise regime.

I feel pathetic going to see a doctor about a smell that only there sometimes. (mornings and after a workout)

Do yourself a favor and increase your calories on days you run. Especially more complex carbs. If it goes away, you know why. If not see a doctor

Think you are right. After I eat the smell goes away.

I'd recommend a post-exercise recovery drink. Since I've been using them I don't get the smells anymore. I used to be like WHAT IS THAT SMELL to my wife after I got done working out and would be like... it smells like burnt/cleaning materials. You can eat carbs afterwards as well, but I work out so late I don't want the calorie increase so I stick to the recovery shakes/drinks.

Sometimes when I eat too much peanut butter my toots stink like burnt rubber, lol. That said unless you have any other symptoms and no ones bothered by it, I wouldn't worry too much.

I sometimes have a weird smell in my nose ( not a burnt smeel, but weird!) after I workout, especially if it's a longer workout. I know it just in my nose because I asked hubby if he smelled anyhting weird on me.
