When do you buy new walking/running shoes?

Is there a set numbers of miles before shoes wear out? How often do you buy new ones? How long does it take to break them in?
My current shoes, the mesh on top is ripping so I know I need new ones. It's just been several years since I was so active.
Thanks!

Often! I would say at least every 6 months ... at LEAST if you use them daily/0

Usually around 3-400 miles. A lot depends on the person. A good rule of thumb is tht of you can bend the toe up significantly or twist the shoe from toe to heel easily, they are shot.0

I think what you run on also matters. Concrete eats shoes up. (Knees too!)0

I wish I could say. I can't stop buying them. Still waiting for the perfect pair. The Nike Free 3.0 v2 being the current most likely candidate!0

A good rule of thumb for most runners is to replace shoes around 500 miles. If you feel like your legs are starting to get achy before you reach that, then you should go ahead and replace them at that point. Some runners will say replace your shoes around 300 miles...I feel like if there's any time where your legs begin to feel achy or you constantly feel fatigue in your legs, then it's probably time to replace them, which for most runners can come anywhere between 300-500 miles on the shoes.
Also, if you do more than just run in your shoes (ie. walk around the mall or neighborhood, mow the lawn, etc) then you might want to replace your shoes sooner than that since there's additional wear and tear.
Oh, and it only takes about one run to break in your running shoes....they're easy to break in.0 -
I WALK ALL THE TIME... JUST GOT NEW ONES IN AUGUST & LOVE THEM..... (SOOO HARD TO FIND SHOES THAT FIT & THAT DON'T HURT... "ZIG NANO~ REEBOK" ... THEY ARE GREAT! PROB BUY ANOTHER PAIR IN A FEW WEEKS TO SWITCH THEM OUT....0

i replace mine around 300-350 miles. I have two pairs that I rotate so I never wear the same pair back to back.0

You may consider looking into a minimalist shoe, otherwise known as barefoot shoes...some research to be done to see if it sounds right to you. but, I replace my no sooner than ever 18months. If they wear out before then, I can exchange them for a full refund...that's the Vibram Fivefinger warranty. Anyway, we were meant to walk and run naturally. So, there is nothing in the shoe to "break down", rather you build up your feet, ankles, calves and everything else. For the cost of a modestly priced pair of running shoes, you can have 18 months of running , walking , hiking, what ever you want! And you'll be doing it in a way that makes you more naturally stronger. Just a suggestion. ...otherwise, all the other answers people gave you were right on.0

THANK YOU!!! I definitely need a new pair or two based on everyone's feedback. I like the idea of having two pairs and rotating them. Guess I'm going shopping today.0
