Well your body needs carbs for energy. But to stay low carb, you want to eliminate all pastas, rice, breads. Look into Michi's ladder, it's a great source that can provide some good info

I personally wouldn't eliminate carbs from your diet, your body really does need them. Just plump for goods carbs instead and not refined one, have wholegrain bread, brown rice and pasta.

I couldn't imagine a life without good carbs!

try the dukan diet plan. its not high in fat like the atkins but you can get bored on a low car diet.

Well your body can use two things for energy carbs or fat. Going NO carb is almost impossible because even healthy veggies have some carbs in them.
I'm doing the Atkins diet. It is very healthy, and easy to stick to.

Visit their website www.atkins.com or go buy the book, and read about it. I'm proof that it works. I've lost 80 pounds and still losing, and I'm doing it healthy!

you need carbs. they get a bad rap because of all the simple carbs that make us fat like snack cakes and white bread/regular pasta. switch to complex carbs like with fruits and whole grains you'll be doing your weightloss and health a great service
  • this is always a fun topic on this forum, i hope to see some great rants, but i dont recomend NO carbs but i try to not eat simple sugars or processed sugars, i only eat whole wheat bread when i do eat bread and no sugary beverages, drinking calories is a waste unless ur talkin protein shakes then it can be ok but alot of them are bad for you too, but if you want a true no carb diet u are pretty much limited to faty meats and cheeses and eggs....but even some cheese and most all dairy has SOMe carbs... well good luck enjoy!

I'm an Atkins dieter. They have a lot of interesting recipes on their site, and I've also got a site in my sig that's got a collection of low carb recipes.
You can also try South Beach Diet, which is similar to Atkins, but not as strict.

You don't NEED most carbs, but you shouldn't go NO carb. Low carb still allows the healthy veggies and such. :)
  • Stay way from carbs like white bread or white rice. With a strict low carbs you lose foods like fruit or beans.
  • Yes, you DO need carbs. That's the number one source of your body's energy. it's what you burn first when you exercise, so if you don't have it your body finds another source of fuel... and next in line is protein. AKA your muscles.

I just did a fitness blog about fad diets this week. Check it out. http://zmanfitness.com/the-truth-about-fad-diets-like-atkins-and-south-beach

    ^ This.

Every single person I know who has gone on a "low carb" diet has gained all the weight right back when they tried to maintain after losing weight. They gained BIG amounts back too. You want this to be a lifestyle change, not something that will just get weight off quickly and make you gain it back later.

Like the others said, just eat healthy carbs like whole wheat or multigrain pasta and breads rather than "junk food carbs" like white bread, regular pasta, etc.

I don't believe in any diet plan that cuts out any food group. I did lower my carbs though. I checked out some Paleo recipes online yesterday and they have some really good recipes. I will definitely try them. :flowerforyou:
  • Going no carbs for a while really works, the weight just melts off. I did it, lost 25 lbs seven years ago and kept the weight off until just recently when I quit doing what I knew I should keep doing. I never have gained back the 25 lbs I lost while on Atkins. Right now I have a ten pound goal.
Most important thing is to read the first five chapters of the Atkins book. It will tell you everything you need to know. For me, I didn't loose any energy, I wasn't hungry, but after a while I started craving sweets.
Once you get to your desired weight, then gradually bring back the low glycymic carbs.

I am doing awesome on low carb. I am averaging 20-50 carbs a day. Feel free to message me with questions. I read a few books and am choosing what works for me. Which is pretty much phase 2 of Atkins I think. I am still experimenting with the amount of carbs I need to feel good and lose weight.

I am eating a lot healthier. I try to get my carbs from leafy greens, kale and lettuce.

My personal opinion. Low/No carb diet plans are bad for your health. They don't work for everyone, and they are high in fat.
I personally tried no carbs after having my kids, and only lost 1 pound in 2 weeks. Did not work at all.
Lost 60 pounds with a balanced diet and exercise

Plus, you cannot sustain the rigid diet in the long term. Most people here will tell you, they need to make a lifestyle change that they can actually stick with for the rest of their lives... if you don't, then you go back to your old ways of eating eventually.

If you really must do something like that, please try south beach. Its much safer and healthier than the others, as it focuses on low fat and you can eat vegetable/healthy carbs.

Plus, I work out a lot, and tend to drop my blood sugar. I would pass out if I tried to run 6 miles without eating any carbs. Your body needs some carbs for energy.

and PLEASE do NOT do low carb if you are diabetic without discussing with your doc. very dangerous
  • I am by no means an expert, but I do agree with other posters that your body does need carbs. I have Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, so in order for me to lose weight I would have to follow a low carb plan such as South Beach. I actually lost 30 pounds in 3 months following the plan. Almost instantly, I became pregnant (even though I was told I would never conceive) and unfortunately, gained a significant amount of weight during my pregnancy.

I have to follow a low carb plan or I continue to gain weight (also a symptom of PCOS). Anyway, I recently stumbled across a blog started by a woman on a journey to lose weight. The majority of her posts are low carb recipes. Not all are low carb, and those have a low glycemic index. She explains it all on her site. It has been so helpful for me. If you're interested, her blog is Kalyn's Kitchen. http://www.kalynskitchen.com
