I know that this isn't a very original statement, but I just read a forum post by someone who lost her father on September 15th (I've included the link to the forum post below). Reading between the lines from all of those who promptly and compassionately responded, it is clear that cancer has touched so many of us. Is there any other disease that has caused so much anguish, loss and pain? I personally vow, here and now, to become more active in my community's LLS chapter. (I lost my father to mutliple myeloma, a blood cancer). I've done the walks, but not much more. I can do more. I will do more. Someday, perhaps in my lifetime, there will be a cure.

And the death of Steve Jobs, yesterday, proves that it doesn't matter how much money you have, cancer can take anyone. I too hope to see a cure in my lifetime.

My mum is fit and healthy. Was a PE teacher, she's never smoked, rarely drinks. Eats healthily. Loves the Gym, works in a nursery chasing 3 year old kids round all day.

Last Summer she was diagnosed with Breast Cancer. After two ops, chemotherapy and radiotherapy, amongst others. She's now back at work and back at the gym.

    Cancer doesn't discriminate.
  • Hi -

  • I literally just posted the below statement on my FB page this morning. My best friend's daughter was diagnosed with Leukemia just before her 1st birthday, my father lost a kidney to cancer, last year I had surgery to remove melanoma from my leg, my uncle is in the hospital right now with a tumor behind his eye that is cancer and they have just found out it has spread to his lymph nodes!!! I HATE CANCER!!!!!

I know hate is such a strong word and sorry I will be using it a lot in this post. But I HATE cancer!!! I hate how it changes lives. I hate how it steals the most beautiful strands of hair from the most precious heads. I hate the fact that it robs people of their lives. I hate the fear that it instills in people. I hate the treatment it subjects patients to. I hate the countless hours it takes away from people, in hospitals, doctors offices and receiving treatment. I hate there is no cure or vaccine against it! I hate that we do not truly know what causes all cancers and how to prevent it. I hate that it crushes families and breaks hearts by taking wonderful people way too soon. I hate the horrible surgeries that some must endure because of cancer! I hate the fact that the individuals that have been directly or indirectly affected by cancer will never think the same. They will always worry if fever is a sign something is wrong, if a pain they are having means the cancer is back, if fatigue or weakness means their bodies are struggling!! I hate the fact that it leaves good people without moms, dads, grandparents, sons, daughters, sisters, brothers, aunts and uncles. If there is any ONE thing I want to see in my lifetime, it's a CURE for cancer!!! I want to see a guarantee that less families have to fight this evil battle, that more parents can rest easy knowing their child will never have to battle cancer, that more people will get to keep their family members around until old age takes them! I just want cancer to be a bad nightmare that's goes away forever!!!

I know too many people who have had cancer, including family members and friends. In an effort to help fight back, I volunteer for the American Cancer Society's Relay For Life event, which takes place in over 5,000 communities. Relay is more than just a fundraiser, it is about bringing a community together in the fight against cancer, and everyone who I've spoken to about the event has said that after they participated in it once, they were hooked. Check out the website www.RelayForLife.org and search for an event near you! It's a great way to support those cancer Survivors in our lives and also to remember loved ones who have been lost to cancer.

Here's a good video about it too: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=esdA6RMpm3I

@lrodriguez: Well said, my friend. I sat with my dad through many of his treatments. When you walk into the cancer center and see all of the stations filled with cancer patients getting treated, some with family, some without, and once I even saw a pregnant woman there--you feel kicked in the stomach. This disease impacts so many lives. It hurts so many people. It kills and destroys. I, too, hate cancer passionately.
