Question for all,

i have cereal for breakfast in the morning but i just hope im not hurting myself in the end.

I have the following:

Banana Nut crunch cereal with skim milk(both 1 cup measured) and half a banana.

Any good? not following a specific diet but following the calorie count.

also, if the cereal isnt a good choice which ones are?

I usually have Kelloggs Special K or anything by Kashi.....and if you're not opposed to Almond Milk...you could try that!

I would look for higher fiber, higher protien, and lower sugar cereals - to get the most bang for your calorie buck!

Kashi cereals are usually very good. Heart to Heart Cinnamon is like cinnamon cheerios, and Cinnamon Harvest is like cinnamon shredded wheat. Actually - most shredded wheat is pretty good for protien, fiber, and sugar content.

Special K (ORIGINAL) is high protien - but low in fiber, pair this up with an apple and you've got good fiber numbers too.

I also eat cereal I like frosted cheerios, special k... I did switch to almond milk (40cal 1 cup) but It is because I do not like the taste of any milk I also add a spoon full (or 1 tbs) of nesquick sugar free chocolate powder (19cal)

I think that's a fine breakfast. Why would you think it wasn't? I think cereal is a good way to start your morning. I would buy one with more fiber though to keep you fuller longer (like Raisin bran).

Just keep within your net calorie goal and you will lose weight!

Read the ingredients on these cereals. Many of them have high fructose corn syrup.
  • I usually start my day with greek yogurt and some granola to jump start my protein early.

I eat cereal for breakfast every morning and a lot of times for dinner. My go to choices are Oatmeal, Cream of Wheat, Shredded Wheat, Cheerios, or Special K. If you have an iphone or android phone I highly recommend an app called "Fooducate".

I have cereal nearly every morning. But none of that healthy boring stuff, froot loops or cocoa krispies or smorz. Might as well start the morning out fun and yummy!

Just make sure you are in your calorie limit, making sure you get the right amount of fiber, protein and whatever else through out the day. One meal a day isn't going to kill you! Enjoy life :p
  • I eat original Fiber One cereal for breakfast on many days. I have it with 3/4 of a cup of unsweetened almond milk. It ends up being only 90 calories for a serving of cereal and the milk. And it is surprisingly good... Sometimes I mix it up and have a cup of vanilla yogurt, and I mix the cereal into that and eat it. That's really good too.

I love the Kashi Go Lean crunch. It does have a little more sugar than some of their others but it has a lot of fibre too. Combined with a cup of skim milk and a serving of your fruit of choice , you should be off to a good start.

I love Kashi, particularly the Crunch & Crispy, I think it is? It's very filling & has a nice, satisfying crunch.

    pffffffffffffft

i have special k CHOCOLATEY DELIGHT. yes. corn flakes with BITS OF DARK CHOCOLATE. how's that for healthy???

listen haters, if i don't get my daily chocolate allowance, someone WILL get hurt. plus, i'm anemic and this particular cereal variety has a *kitten* ton of iron, so i use that as an excuse.

I love egg white omelets with veggies for breakfast or anytime. Low in calories. You could try oatmeal. More fiber

It's not going to hurt you as long as your logging it and accounting for it in your daily intake. That said, Banana Nut Crunch does appear to have a higher calorie concentration per cup than other cereals (240 cal per cup from what I've found). By way of comparison, Rice Chex are 100 calories per cup. If you want more flavor, Honey Nut Chex are about 160 calories per cup. Kelloggs Crunchy Nut cereal (the O's version) are 133 calories per cup.

So again, if you're accounting for it in your diary and ultimately sticking to your calorie goal, then there's no reason you shouldn't eat what you enjoy. However, if you want to lower the number of calories in your breakfast (either because you're having problems keeping to your calorie goal or just want to have more calories available later in the day for other meals) then doing to a less calorie dense cereal or possibly a different type of milk can help.

Just for reference, I eat cereal every morning. Most often it's one of the three I mentioned above along with a cup of 2% milk. It works out well for me and I have no problems sticking to my calorie goal.

Not really thinking cereal is a bad choice… hell I love the banana nut crunch cereal… and I always have it with skim milk… working in NYC, it can get expensive to buy breakfast and I don’t want to eat egg white omelets everyday

But I also don’t want to hurt my losing weight with something that might not help it.

Just checking for everyones thoughts and maybe some other ideas.

Just out of curiousity, why all the fiber?

Pro: Cereal is fortified with tons of vitamins.
Con: Cereal can have a lot of sugar, and in general, grains don't keep you feeling satisfied very long.

Listen to your body. If cereal keeps you satisfied until your snack or lunch, why not?! I would def. say be mindful of the added sugars. But it's quick, it's easy, and it's classic!

(I eat Kashi GoLean because it has a lot of protein in it, and I find that I need protein to be satisfied. Unfortunately, not every morning do I have the time to cook up eggs, and breakfast meats are pretty high in sodium. So I find that the GoLean is a good quick option that keeps me satisfied on rushed days, or days where I know I need to be mindful of sodium.)

P.S. I agree with the above poster that recommend almond milk. Even try soy milk. For certain cereals it adds another level of flavor and as an added bonus, it reduces calories.

Fiber helps keep you regular. It is helpful for people who intake a lot of protein (dieters tend to do this) to intake protein because protein can actually stop you up.

Also, fiber keeps you satisfied longer!

Cereal is actually a pretty good choice for breakfast compared to some of the other stuff you could be having. It's high in vitamins and fiber (usually) and fairly low in calories and fat. But it's very easy to eat more than the recommended serving, which is usually 1 cup or less. I don't know about you, but 3/4 cup of cereal doesn't fill me up!

I found this comparison to be helpful when choosing my cereal: http://www.acaloriecounter.com/breakfast-cereal.php
