Did you know? Strengthening your core will help almost every other aspect of your workouts, as well as shaping those abs and that butt!

this workout program is from mens health but it works for everyone.

I do core work right in my cube in the office as it's not really a big calorie burner so it doesn't make you all sweaty, but it's a great addition to your regular workouts and will net huge gains for a relatively short workout.

Hehe, no no, it's a good question. Your core is basically right below your last rib all the way down to where your butt becomes your thigh. But it's both front and back. It consists of your lower and mid back muscles, all of your abdominal muscles (most people don't realize your abs are multiple muscles, not just the part that consists of the "6-pack"), and your gluts (your butt muscles). Some don't consider the gluts part of it, but I do, and my trainer does, they don't receive the full brunt of most core work, but they are a relatively unused group so any work on them is good work and can help "raise"up the butt to make it look nicer and firm.

Oh, and you may ask, "besides a good looking stomach, what do I care about my core?"

Well, your core is important for 2 big reasons besides looks. 1 its where you get all your stablization from, I.E. your balance. Have a weak core and you aren't as graceful, agile, or powerful through most of your upper body. If you ever watch LaDanian Tomlinson or Barry Sanders run (running backs from the NFL) you may ask yourself "how the heck can he go from full speed forward to full speed sideways back to full speed forward that fast? He's like a cat!" It's because their cores are VERY strong. As a matter of fact, the NFL puts a premium on core work! If you have no Idea who I am talking about go here, youtube has some video of them running.

    this is awesome

Notice how, no matter how crazy the fake they make is, their midsection stays absolutely still, THAT is core baby!

Now the second reason is, your core prevents back injuries. The reason why most middle aged men have back problems is because they do NO core work.

man, I have watched that Barry Sanders video like 5 times, he was a SPECEMIN! I was so sad when he retired (much too young in my opinion). I know many of you don't care about football. But I am a pure fan of the athletecism of it. Some think it is barbaric, but in my opinion, it is closest to a "thinking" person's game as there is out there. Sorry for the off - topic; but even if you don't like the sport, you watch this video and can you help but think, this guy had it all? And he was generous (active in charity), very mild-mannered, loyal, CLEAN (he was a big proponent of a chemical free body), and humble. He was really one of the best examples of what we all should reach for that I can remember.

Banks accidentally left out the lateral muscles that support both the abs and back. You should include these in your core, right banks?

To do the lats simply put one hand behind your head and bend sideways to that arms side, repeat for the other side. Start out with 10 reps on each side then increase by another set the next week and so on. This exercise can be done in your cube as well as at home on an exercise ball and with or without weights.

Hey Bob. Well, it's a matter of contention. Many trainers like to isolate the lats (the dorsal muscles) because they are a large muscle group. Plus, they aren't really one of the muscles that helps stablize, they are important, oh yes they are, but I don't usually include them in my core workouts. When I do upper body work, I iso the lats with pull downs and front grip pull ups. You can include them if you want, but lats connect to the shoulder. The lats do benefit residually from some of the work you do with the core. I have no problem with someone including them though, because they do attach to some of the muscles in the core area. So basically I said nothing definitive in that whole statement:blushing:
I.E. if you want to expand your core workout to include them, great! But it's just as good (IMHO) to isolate them and work on them separately.

Banks is the one with the tie.

I wish the article (and ones like it) would tell you which muscle you are working. Sometimes it's obvious, but it helps me to concentrate on the muscle I'm working. It also lets me know if I'm doing it right. I think the one on the ball works the upper abs, but I'm not sure. Thanks for the article though.

I just started doing core workouts. I only do them once a week along with pilates twice a week. I can already feel stronger and only after 3 weeks.

LoL, I would think it's obvious from my profile. But I am freakishly sensitive and caring :embarassed:
so I could see the mistake.

yep, obliques would work. you are correct. they get worked along with the abdominals. Those are the ones I was talking about when I said lower back, I was trying not to get too geeky.
