Tri Training Challenge

edited October 3 in Fitness and Exercise
This weekend I was kicking around the idea of a triathlon oriented challenge for October. I've never led (never mind come up with) a challenge before, so this could die a horrible flaming death, or it could be a lot of fun. Hopefully this type of challenge appeals to some of you and we can get a good thread/challenge going this month.

So here is my idea...
Points will be awarded for each mile you swim, bike or run in October. Points will differ based on the activity similarly to the way distances differ in a triathlon (this is done to hopefully balance out the scoring so a strong swimmer can swim 5 miles and "compete" with a strong biker who bikes 50 miles). Swimming can be in open water or in the pool, biking can be road, mountain, trainer/spinning or stationary bike, running can be pavement, trail, or treadmill. Track your miles and post them in this thread and I'll keep a running total of miles and points.

Points will be awarded as follows:
swim - 25 points for each mile
bike - 1 point for each mile
run - 4 points for each mile

Feel free to post personal goals or challenge other MFPers.

Good luck everyone!

Oh, feel free to count workouts from this past weekend... I'm posting this a few days late, but it is an October challenge, so anything from Oct 1 on counts.

My goal is 275 points, broken down something like this:
    4 miles swimming = 100 points
    125 miles biking = 125 points
    12 miles running = 48 points

I LOVE this idea! Just what I needed to get me out of my current 'slump'. I'm looking forward to participating!

Oh, and we should probably have a point bonus for everyone who trains in all 3 disciplines, right?

For a month's worth of training, sprint distances seem a little short. How about this -

100 point bonus for everyone who does at least 1 mile swimming, 50 mile biking and 10 miles running. That's roughly the half ironman distances (rounded down). Sound reasonable?

OK... I threw together a quick spreadsheet to keep track of everyone's miles and do the point calculations (I'm nerdy like that, what can I say). I'll try to post updates a couple of times a week.

I love this idea, iv recently started running (just completed C25K, last night).

Iv been wanting to do some Tri training, and this is the perfect challege for me, i can now get my bike back out, and get back in the pool! More than a year since i last swam, but used to do a mile swim session regulary.

My Running and Biking are tracked on Endomondo GPS thing, so i can track that pretty accurately, getting out the bike tonight! Whoo Hoo!

    from October 1st:
    Run - 7.59 miles (12.25 km)

P.S. Add me on Endomondo btw anyone if your on. My user name is Stewie Leigh

10/5 swam 1 1/4 miles! Broke my mental block against swimming, hadn't swam since feeling like I was going to drown during my first tri........and I am a strong swimmer, for the most part. :)

    10/5 - Road bike & bike trainer = 21.75 miles

It was dark already at 6:45pm (in WI) so I had to jump on the trainer to finish my ride :grumble:

    Ouch! :D my goals are:

    Swim 3 miles
Bike 50 miles (try for this for that 100 point bonus :) )
    Run 25 miles

I have a question: on poor weather days, I have a crappy exercise bike, and computer on it has long past its expirey and don't work. How can I track my distance? Should I take an average minutes per mile on my actual bike and apply that to my exercise bike; I ask as I don't want to cheat myself out of miles or say iv done more than I really have!, cheers for your input

Here's what I've got as of this morning. I'll be out of town all weekend for a race, so I'm not sure how much I'll be able to update, but I'll get caught up next week when I get back to work.

    Great job everyone!

on an unrelated note... anyone know how to turn that link into an active hyperlink so people don't have to cut and paste? I tried the typcial bb code with the tags, but it didn't work.
