In two weeks I'm running my first 5k. I've been training for a while as I don't want to be the last one at the finish line. Today, at the gym I was able to run 3 miles in 38 minutes.. I consider that a small victory! May not be the best time..but, considering a year ago I could barely walk up the stiars..I consider it progress

I noticed a couple of things..
1. I no longer feel like an elephant trying to run:)
2. My ankle no longer hurts
3. I was able to run 3 laps around track before stopping for a short walk(1/2 lap)
4. I felt great!

Well 3miles is pretty much 5K if I have the math right, I did my first this Aug in 43mins, and my second last weekend at 40 mins 30sec in the pouring rain!

So keep up just finishing is something alot of other people have never done, and your first time is just something to improve on! So run, rest when you need, and go at a pace that is comfortable the first time. The first time completing it is the challenge, the second one is to improve!
    Good luck!

Good job! I'm noticing the same thing myself. My first 5k is a week from today so I definitely know how you're feeling! Last year I was huffing and puffing just walking down the street. Can't believe I'm about to run a 5k!

Good for you, and definitely let us know how it goes!

That's fabulous!!! I used to run 10k's but that was a long time ago! I want to get back to running. I love it!! When I was working in a hospital, I met a running coach from the Caymen Islands and he told me to ice my knees after running even if your knees are healthy. I still do it even when power walking and my knees are great! Good luck! :flowerforyou:
  • You will do great. I ran my first 5k(unofficial) this morning. I ran 3.25 miles with .5 miles warm up and cool down walk in 43 min. I was proud of myself, and you should be proud of your accompolishments. I plan to run an official 5k next year as one of my goals. Keep up the great work and know that if you put your mind to it you can acheive anything.

This is great! The type of progress you are describing is the exact things you need to LOVE running and get better at it. Keep it up and let us all know how it goes. After you do one you'll be surprised how fast you improve with more training.

It doesn't matter where you finish. The accomplishment is to remember where you were and the hard work you put in to complete the race.

Nice!!! You will never ever be the last one in any race. The last oness are the one's that say "I can totally do that race, no problem".. but they don't train for it and are not physcally fit for it. So NO worries for you :)
i ran my first 5k a week ago. I just acted like it was another workout. I didn't rush, I didn't get scared, no anxiety rush that others talk about.

I finished just under 40 minutes. I can easily improve on that! hehe.

I have 3 races planned for November!!

Thanks everyone for the kind compliments. Never, ever would I have thought I would be running much less running a 5k in a few weeks! My first race is to say I've done it and to complete it..My races thereafter are more for improving on my time. I'm a little worried as there are some hills and I'm not used to hills..but, I will take it slow and all will be fine.

My new goal is to run one 5k a month..LOL should be interesting as I live in Wisconsin:) We will see

I started C25k in early July and did my first 5K on Sept. 10th and my second one last weekend. Here is my advice for tackling the hills - look down and focus on the 3-5 steps in front of you, NOT on the hill in front of you, and before you know it the hill will be behind you. Run your race, don't worry about anyone else. What kept me going was my determination to finish without walking by knowing that I only got ONE first race and I would have to live with whatever I did or didn't do. So I did it, which proved to myself I could do it, so now if I have a bad race, it is okay, it is because I've had a bad day, not because I can't. You can do it! Good luck. It is a great feeling of accomplishment to mark that off your bucket list.

I'm sure this is true in some cases, but not always. Very often the people bringing up the rear are people like me who are still pretty overweight but have challenged themselves to complete something many average-weight people never do in their entire lives.

When I ran my first 5k I remember seeing a guy who probably weighed around 400 lbs come across the finish line & all I can say is that I was overwhelmed with admiration for him. Pretty sure everyone else felt the same way, & he quite possibly got the biggest cheers from the spectators out of all the racers.

@bregalad5, LOVE that pic!!! Totally stealing it.
