Personally, I can't go to the store without a list. I figure out what I'm going to have each day for each meal, see what I've got and write down what I need. Call it OCD, but I also write my list so that I can follow it how the store is laid out!
    Good luck!

fage yougurt (or any greek style yougurt)

ezekial grain products (tortillas are really good)

    hummus of course

    cabbage for snacking

seedless grapes (freeze them for lovely snacks)

pumpkin seeds are a good fat snack

steam in a bag veggies (frozen food section)

cottage cheese for a high protein calcium rich snack

peanut butter (make sure it has no sugar added)

    avacados

    any aged cheese...yum

do not be afraid of "fat" like in cheeses, etc...we need some fat

You should plan out what you are going to eat for the week.... Then you know exactly what to get....

    I'm loving:
    arnold's bakery lite bread - 40 cals/slice, can't beat that!
    veggie or red pepper hommus
newman's own cereal - wheat puffs
    avocado's
    campbells select harvest soups
    chocolate rice cakes

Another idea, which I've done before as well, is if you've got some meals in mind, put them into MFP and see what the calories, fat, ect. are going to be. I get a lot of recipes from Kraft.com and they list out what the nutrition is for each serving. The majority of them are really good, and my hubby and 6 yr old son like them too!

I usually make a list before I go...I think of the essentials I always eat and run out of quickly. I just check my fridge/cabinet and I'm usually low on:

    Milk/soymilk
    eggs
    dry cereal
    bread
Lean Cuisines (for when I'm at work)

Then I make a list of the grains/meats/fruits/veggies I need:

    oats
    grits
    granola bars
    peanut butter
    canned tuna
raw meat (my bf usually buys this--lean steak and chicken breasts)
    low fat cheese
bag of apples and oranges (i also get fruit from school)
frozen veggies with mix ins like rice/pasta (so i can just add meat and it's a meal)

And the extra goodies I usually get if I have extra $$:

    whole grain Wasa crackers
    light mayo or sandwich spread
    hot cocoa mix
    reduced sodium soup
    no sugar added jam
    yogurt

I get a salad every day on campus as well, and also buy things like fruit cups and Muscle Milk because I have a meal plan and never use all the money. I get my coffee freshly ground from the Starbucks on campus.

I know what you mean about not knowing what to buy. I went to a nutrition class and the best advice I got from it was that you should try to stay away from the middle of the store. Not sure if you've heard this before, but if you picture the way a grocery store is set up, the milk, cheeses, meats and produce are all on the outside walls. The pre-packaged and processed food is in the middle. Does this mean everything in the middle of the store is unhealthy? Absolutely not, but if you stick to fruits and vegetables MORE than processed food, it's healthier for you. I still have to buy my low-calorie snacks, and whole wheat breads and cereals on the middle aisles, but I try to fill my cart with the other things first. I've only just begun this weight-loss plan with myfitnesspal. I know what I should eat, but I just have to start doing it. Good luck to you.

I never know what I am going to cook ahead of time, so I just have a list of staple foods I always have in the house. When I run out of one, I add it to the list. I can make pretty much anything with these items, then just fill in here and there when I make something special.

I suggest always going to the produce section first. See what is in season, or especially ripe. Fill your cart here.
My fruit/vegetables staples: zucchini, onions, spinach, cilantro, green bell peppers, carrots, celery, habanero peppers, garlic, blueberries, strawberries.

My dairy staples: plain yogurt, skim milk, light sour cream, cheddar cheese

Meats staples: white meat fish like tilapia, shrimp, eggs

    Boxed staples: cereal, oatmeal

Snack staples: popcorn, chips & salsa, jello sugar-free pudding

Bulk section staples: olive oil, arborio rice, couscous, quinoa, pasta, granola

It has helped me to make a menu for dinners for two weeks. I go through the cookbooks to see what I need for dinner and make my shopping list. Then I know that I have things in the house for dinners and have a nice long list to choose from when planning my days. I know it's boring, but I eat pretty much the same thing everyday for breakfast and lunch. All this pre-planning keeps me from thinking about food all day long.

    Strawberries
    Cottage Cheese
    Cucumbers
    Oatmeal
    Chicken

    Apples
    String Cheese
    Hummus
    Wraps
Just a couple things but hope that helps!
