Healthy Habits versus Obsession

I just had to post on this as I've seen to many status updates lately and NSV from people who seem to think that if they cannot perfectly measure the calories of a food then it is not worth having in case they go over their daily calories.
While it is good to be accurate and vigilant, it is UNHEALTHY to go to the point where you avoid eating anything you can't measure. These are some of the lifestyle traits commonly displayed by individuals with eating disorders.
If you are concerned that you might overeat calories one day then that's fine. Overeating one day will not make you gain weight. It is progressively overeating day after day that leads to weight gain. If you are good at keeping within your caloric goals 90% of the time then do not stress over the 10% of the time where you might go to a restaurant with friends or have a slightly larger than average piece of pizza.

awesome to hear that someone else has noticed that some people do seem to go to the extremes, i have noticed more that people are only eating a small percentage of their overall calorie content, this is only going to lead their bodies into starvation mode and put added stress on their organs not to mention the lack of nutrients.
i want to lead a healthy life and i think if i maintain healthy living then by default i am going to lose weight.0 -
While I agree that no one is perfect nor should they try to be, it is important for folks like me who have been overweight all our lives to be ever vigilant or else we will go back to the lifestyle that kept us fat and unhealthy.0

This is amazing. I obsess, and actually I guess you could say I used to have a eating disorder because I starved myself to not gain weight for about 2 monthes...and then crashed and gained a ton over 2 years...along with a kid and stress and depression but Im starting to be okay with the breaking it every little while, Im not a good healthy eater Im sooo picky so Im mainly staying with fruits and veggies right now so that I can keep in the habit of eating them..and im cutting soda out so that should help..i went to my friends bday yesterday and they were actually all making fun of me since I wasnt eating and I told them I was on a diet and they kept telling me that it wouldnt last...and to just eat...I was kind of glad that I was on a diet though since I didnt feel like eating alot that was there.. pretty sure all that would have been my cals for the day...0

that's not necessarily true. I find that when I am always counting calories I get no where. I know what things I shouldn't eat and what I should. I have been fat 75 percent of my life. but now I have come to terms with how my brain works. So if I want to eat something with alot of carbs I don't eat carbs at dinner or what ever. sometimes being "ever vigilant" will make a fat person backslide when the day comes that you slip up. and there will be days you slip up and that is ok. so what I guess I am saying is don't obsess , accept!0 -
Yes, a person can become too obsessed with very calorie in and out.
My husband looks at up to 5 different sites before deciding how many calories an item, like corn, has in a serving and picks the highest count he finds for each item, just to be safe.
He took a scale on our recent vacation to weigh food at other people's homes.
He got below 6% body fat, wound up in the hospital.
Is seeing a nutritionist, a physical therapist, a personal trainer and a therapist!
The family doctor was so alarmed by his blood tests that he made my husband come in immediately and is giving him a series of testosterone injections.
He was doing 2 separate 1 hour cardio sessions every day! The doctors made his scale back to 45 min. every other day.
His veins stick out all over.
Yes, a person can obsess.
Thank Goodness he is getting help to stop.0
