fish oil and weight loss

I have read that fish oil can help in weight loss. And I have read that it does not.

I am a big believer in fish oil for cardiovascular health, already. I was taking it faithfully, ran out and did not buy any for about a month. During that time, the scales moved very slow if not at all. Once I got back on the fish oil, the scales began to drop again.

Soooo, I don't know. So what do you think?

    Bump!
  • I don't know about fish oil but I've been adding flax oil to my diet since August. Before that I was gaining & loosing the same 3 lbs over and over. Now I am down 10 lbs from Sept 1(about 2 lbs a week). It also has helped with the feeling of being hungry. There is something about fat that brings on that "full" feeling. If it is good fat--with omegas I am okay with having a higher fat diet. It seems to be working for me anyway!

Fish oil does appear to have a very MODEST thermogenic effect (meaning it actually increases your metabolism slightly because your small capilaries are slightly dilated), but this is only on the order of 60-75 calories a day.(see http://fishoilbenefitsforhealth.com/fish-oil-for-weight-loss/). But if you think it helps YOU, then by all means, do it!

I dunno about a weight loss, but I can definitely feel the overall difference when I take fish oil to when I don't. I feel very sluggish without it, it's definitely a big plus for cardio health and overall energy regulation.

My physician wants me to take fish oil for the cardiovasular help. My dad died of a heart attack at age 56, my mother and her mother both had hypertension. (My parents couldn't just pass on great antiques???)
I take 4 tablets daily, 2 with breakfast, 2 at bedtime.
Bottom line, if your physician is okay with the supplements, and you notice that they are helping, take them. Everyone's body is different and has different requirements to stay healthy. I remind myself of that everytime I read "conflicting" articles.
    Good luck

    d2,
My husband also takes fish oil for cardio issues. Doctor recommended it because nothing else would bring down his cholestrol. Since he has been taking it, his level is better than the doctor's. :)

Also, my side of the family suffers from strokes as they get older and fish oil was recommended for that. And if it gives my metabolism a little boost, then I just consider that an extra bonus. :)
