diet coke addict?

I was hoping to get some advice. I think I may be addicted to diet coke....if thats even possible. I drink it every day to the point that I dont even record it because the amount is just embarrassing! Its the first thing I want in the morning and I drink it all day. I have tried to stop in the past and had a 2 week long headache before I gave up and went right back to it. I am worried about the effects on my health and diet coke is expensive when you drink it all the time! I am also tired of the headaches when I dont drink it, and have now started getting headaches when I DO drink it! Has anyone else had this issue and kicked the habit? How did you do it? Thanks in advance for any advice.

Just because it says diet doesn't mean it won't contribute to making you fat. Thanks to horrible label laws, a company can put 0gs of whatever if there is .5g or less of it. So when a consumer thinks this is not going to make him or her fat and over consumes, that's when things go sour.0

Start watering it down bit by bit. Add an ounce of water each week. You'll be great!0

I am in the same situation as you. I get up and MUST have my diet coke. I actually have one right now. lol. I use to drink it all day also but I am trying to quit. You have to do it slowly. I have gotten it down to 2 a day now. It is going to take time tho. Little by little we can do it. I need to keep more water bottled and out front instead of the diet cokes. That seems to help.0

I am about a month "sober" from Diet Coke. I quit cold turkey. My husband said I was a chain drinker. I wouldn't even have a can all the way gone and I'd open a new one!! The first three days for me were the worst. I stocked up on crystal light and powerade zero, but I've recently added sobe life water zero, since it has a natural sweetner, not an artificial one. but mostly I have water. Lots and lots of water. I did caffeine free diet coke, so I didn't have to worry about the caffiene withdrawl, but you can do it. it saves a TON of money, and I feel better. I actualy tried to have a diet cherry coke last night and I had to give the can to my hubby because it tasted so artificial, so chemical. You can do it, and yes, I totaly agree that it is an addiction!!0

I stopped drinking all pop and eliminated all artificial sugars from my diet. It was the best thing I ever did. I still drink coffee and get my sugar fix from Maple Syrup in it but I feel way more healthy. It is a challenge because outside of the house there seems to be nothing to drink but water. Water is your best friend. Yes the headache will eventually go away.:drinker:0

I have had the same problem. Diet coke is not the best for you. The sodium alone is a killer. My advice is to wean yourself off slowly. I drink one diet drink a day. 1st thing in the morning I have hot tea, which I love. Then at lunch I have my diet drink. And at dinner I have either crystal lite or iced tea. Of course I drink water all day. U will have headaches as you start to wean off. Thats the withdrawl. And yes caffeine is an addictive drug. Start by cutting one diet out this week, when u feel like you have accomplished that, take another out, until you are down to a # u are comfortable with. Also, to substitute try diet Rite. It has low sodium and is caffeine free. Hope this helps. B0

Step down 1 can per day at a time until you are down to 1 can. Then allow yourself to have 1 can a day. 1 can of diet coke a day is not going to kill you, especially if 90% of everything else you're eating/drinking is wholesome.
If I had to tell myself I'd never, ever be able to have a coke again, I'd be much more reluctant to quit.0 -
What the hell is wrong with diet coke? People are overworried as far as I'm concerned. I drink a lot of it too. I'm diabetic and the last thing I am going to worry about is a few mg of whatever is in the diet coke. It doesn't affect your weight loss, it taste good and I love it.
What you are reacting to withdrawing from is the caffeine, hun. So I say drink your diet coke and don't worry about it. If you want to stop for some reason, switch to caffeine free and start slowing weaning from one to the other until you are on all caffeine free and then you can stop without any ill effects. But I don't see any reason to worry about it.0 -
I am embarrassed to say that I used to be the same way. I too tried to quit cold turkey and got horrible horrible headaches. Instead I ended up having to reduce the amount each week and supplement in water. So let's just say i would drink 6 cans a day, so the next week i would drink 4 cans and try to drink 2 cans worth of water. Then i would do drop down to 2 cans the next week. I never completely got off the caffeine though (which is probably what is causing your headaches to be on it and then to drop off suddenly). I now start the day with one cup of coffee or tea and the rest of the day is water. I still reach of a diet soda once in a while but i have limited myself to once a week.
I got off of it because of a couple of reasons including that it was probably sucking the calcium out of my bones with the amount I was drinking, it stains the teeth, and although it seemed filling I noticed i craved sweet foods when I was drinking it and now I don't really feel the need for anything sweet.
I am really happy with my decision to ween myself off of it. I hope you have good luck breaking the addicition!0 -
YES, I was addicted to REAL COKE once upon a time!! I drank it DAILY. What I did was start slow, got it down to one a day, then 5 days a week, then 3 days a week, then once a week, then every other week.....You get the picture! Dont go cold turkey, cuz coke is a drug!! Start slow and wean off of it! I started replacing that with coke zero when I needed one....NOW I have a coke zero maybe once or twice a month! I drink 8-10 glasses of water everday now and dont really think twice about coke.
I also had headaches DAILY.....and I am not sure if it is coincidental that I dont drink them now, or that I eat clean......but my headaches are down to 1-2 a month now! Your headaches may get worse at first, but they will taper and get better!
Just take it one COKE at a time!!

Hi! Welcome to DC Anonymous. It is in fact possible to be addicted to caffeine and the sugars in DC don't make it any easier. I am almost 2 years sober haha. I laugh but in all seriousness I had a major problem. When I was forced to quit (long story but i didn't have access to it on our honeymoon and plane delays and such made life horrible for the first 3 days) I actually had literal withdrawals. I had the shakes and threw up for two days straight. No i wasn't pregnant haha. I was drinking like a 12 pack a day prior to our honeymoon.
My advice is to just try cutting one out of your day for a week then next week cut two out a day until you are down to one or two a day. If you can cut it all out thats even better but any reduction in diet coke is a good one. Good luck! I know it sounds silly to admit a Diet coke addiction but they put so much junk in that stuff its not surprising our society is getting hooked. I was the same way with the first thing in the morning and before bed and not drinking anything else...I'd opt for Diet coke over ANYTHING even wine or beer! You're not alone in this odd addiction. lol. good luck! just slowly cut it out and you'll be okay no headaches or anything0 -
I hear ya!!! Right now I am doing the same thing. I haven't had a diet coke for 4 days. It's tough but I am feeling a lot less bloated. I do drink coffee and not planning on giving that up, just cut out all the nutrisweet especiaaly gum too!0

I'm a diet coke addict too! I used to drink several bottles a day and I am down to 1-2 cans, usually one is caffeine free, next week I will cut down to one can a day and the following week the smallest cans and then hopefully once or twice a week and eventually cutting it out completely. I have stopped drinking it before when I was really watching what I ate and noticed if I was not drinking it and eating good I would feel and sleep so much better, yet I can't seem to stop it cold turkey, wish me luck lol0

I buy those 7.5 oz cans. I usually have one of those a day. They have diff. flavors. Good Luck. I cvan't quit my diet pop either. I did see where they make truvia drinks. I haven't been able to find them yet.0

Thank you for all the useful information everyone it is very appreciated! after reading what you all had to say im wondering if the need for sweetness is the issue I am having with watching what I eat. At times it seems impossible to eat healthy!! I am also having trouble with bloating and belly fat.....just wondering if its all connected....anyway thanks again!0

I was completely addicted to sodas for years. Went through 3-4 cans of diet soda per day for 3 years.
I quit cold turkey earlier this year. I had horrible headaches and moodiness for about a week. After that, I dropped nearly 10 lbs in water weight and lost 2 inches around my waist within 3 weeks of quitting and was sleeping better than I had in years. My BM's were finally regular for the first time in years. I don't miss it at all.
If you can, get off of it. Stock up on Ibuprofen and get through it.
If I drink any soda now, I immediately feel bloated and "blah."0 -
I had a one can per day habit, as well as a little "shot" in the morning to wake me up. I couldn't imagine getting through an afternoon at work without my DC, and since I liked to have it with a salty snack, it was even worse for me. My doctor strongly suggested I should give up DC. I have to admit that I couldn't follow that advice for awhile, but I have greatly reduced the number of cokes I'm drinking per week. I drink more hot tea and water than anything else, and I'm trying to drink more green tea than black. I sitll have to have a DC on some stressful days at work when I need a jolt, but not as often now.0

My Dr. said diet soda doesn't hurt healthy people. But if you have insulin resistance problem (diabetes), the sweet taste will trigger your pancreas work hard to generate insulin for nothing; and if you have high blood pressure problem or heart condition, the high sodium amount in carbonated soda is not good for you. So if you don't have the above problems, enjoy the zero-calorie soda however much you want.
One time I read about no more than 12-can a day guideline. So if you drink less than two 2-liter a day, you should be fine.0 -
I'm addicted to Coke Zero. I used to drink 4-6 cans a day. Now, I make myself drink two bottles of water (my 20oz reusable bottles) before I have a can. I figure, if I've already got 40 oz of water in me, a Coke Zero isn't going to hurt. I try to only have 1 can a day now, but I work nights, so sometimes I need an extra caffeine boost around midnight. I do notice that I'm not as bloated since I've cut down.
I don't think it's necessarily "bad" for you. I just know that caffeine and carbonation cause you to hold on to water weight, and too much carbonation is bad for your bones. Just cut down and drink it in moderation. You'll adjust.0 -
I was a huge Diet Coke addict. Many per day. I thought: "people drink coffee all day long and this has less caffeine." It turns out that it is really bad for you on many levels. There are other threads under the search tab just above your original post that you can go to and find out more. One reason is the Aspertame has a link to formadehyde when being metabolized in the body. The body cannot understand what aspertame is as it is not a natural sugar. You should drink if very cold as it is nearly toxic when it has been kept in your car or is room temp. (This is from research my doctor has done.) When I drank it my muscles hurt all the time. Some people are more succeptible to this than others. I also got kind of a brain fog and had trouble concentrating. Aspertame is also an appetite stimulant so it causes you to eat more. It may not have calories but you are more likely to put on weight if you are a Diet Coke drinker. There is also research connecting aspertame to Multiple Sclerosis. Scarey stuff.
I quit by reducing the number I drank each day by one a day. I have not had a headache since the last time I drank one just over 2 months ago. I am no longer bloated by the bubbles and sodium and find that most days I have to force myself to eat my minimum 1200 calories as I don't crave the empty calories I was eating with the pop. I now have room in my stomach for healthy filling foods. The only sore muscles I have now are from going to the gym. I feel like I am having much less fog brain maybe because I am getting better quality sleep now because I don't have caffeine in my system.
My opinion is do the research then QUIT completely. I used to say I'll quit when they pry this silver can from my cold, dead hand. It my have come to that had I continued. :grumble: I do miss it when I see an ad or someone is drinking it, but I don't crave it and have not even been tempted to go back. Good luck to anyone trying to stop. I tried several times over the past few years but never stuck with it very long. This time its forever.0 -
I used to be addicted to Diet Coke as well, it used to be my only source of hydration and I am a runner so that is really bad!! I just stopped cold turkey decied not to buy any more soda and I bought a water bottle that has a dial on it to keep track of how many times I refilled it and I made it into a challenge to see how many times I could refill it in a day, I didnt have the headache issue because I do drink coffee in the morning so I get my caffine fix. I still do have a diet coke once in a while but I no longer crave it and kicking the habit has helped with other food cravings as well.0

I'm struggling with the same thing---thanks for posting your question...think I'll start actually keeping track. It's only 11:30am and I've already had 2. I too am a "chain" drinker and often open new cans before finishing the last--can't stand it room temperature I guess.

I just don't get it, I have successfully lost over 100lbs drinking 2 liters of DC a day. Granted I don't drink soda anymore but it doesn't make you fat, and it has almost no sodium (40mg per serving). The extra food you eat as a result of the cravings that artificial sweeteners can cause on the other hand is a different story.0
