Bottom Line on Eating Exercise Calories

I've only been at MFP since August, but love the site. Today was my first day to actually browse the message boards and I was surprised to find the topic of "Eating Exercise Calories."
The way I understand the argument is that we should always strive to be right at our target calorie goal for the day. If I exercise one day and burn 500 calories, that just means I can eat 500 more calories that day.
Is this a pretty accurate way to summarize the argument?
Thanks,
Chad
