Old Chicago Pizza - Menu vs Nutritional data

Was looking up online since I'll be going there tomorrow to meet some friends and wanted to know what might be ok to eat, and noticed some deceptive representational differences between the menu and the nutritional information.

The menu states an individual sized pizza 'serves 1'.
The nutritional information (seperate PDF) states an individual sized pizza has 4 slices, then it gives the breakdown per slice.

So in effect, they're representing the nutritional information on the 'individual size' as serving 4.

I suppose they don't really want to state that the individual sized deep dish cheese only pizza is really 1386 calories, 72 fat, and 132 carbs...

Eh, maybe I'm reading it wrong. But it seems like misrepresentation. If it's intended to be eaten as a single serving, then it should be represented that way.

    Good job reading the "fine print"! So many places do that and then people wonder why their diets are all screwed up.

    I saw the same thing when I started using MFP and documenting my calories. It means I need to share my "individual" pizza or stick to the house salad and enjoy the smell of pizza. Hmp!

    Honestly, I think that in this particular case they aren't trying to purposefully mislead. What the menu is stating is the average number of people that that size pizza would normally serve (as in, be a filling meal for them). Like when a larger size pizza says serves 2-3. That doesn't mean it will be cut into 2 or 3 pieces and the nutritional info will be given for 1/2 or 1/3 the pizza. Pizza info for restaurants is always by the slice, based on the number of slices that specific sized pizza is cut into. So that pizza that serves 2-3 would probably be cut into 8 slices, how those 2-3 people divide up the pizza and eat it is determined by them, so the nutritional info is given for each slice so you can just enter the number of slices consumed rather than have to work out all the calculations and figure out what percentage of what amount of pizza you ate because it gave info for 1/3 of a pizza.
  • I don't know, I still take it as the old 'bottle of coke' idea. Nutrition information for half a bottle? Really? (Although I think the major companies are changing that or have.)

    The individual pizza is intended to be a meal for one adult. The calories should state that clearly. Then I can go 'oh #$%$, I better only eat half of that...'

    It makes MORE sense in an item that is intended to share, to split it out by slice. but it should remind you how many slices are in a 'serving'. Not all places slice in the same way, either.

    It's not uncommon to see desserts listed as '2' servings. Seriously. Two? Then why can't I just get a single serving, my date is diabetic and doesn't want that other half... Or the muffins I like at Great Harvest Bakery. Nice breads, but they list their muffin nutritionals as 1/2 a muffin. Hmm - I think the scones too, not sure on that. Why? Well, it's not likely it's because the majority of their customers eat 1/2 a muffin at a meal. It's likely they want to downplay (for those interested enough to look) what the full calorie/fat is of said muffin.

    They're all ways of being misleading. Hmm. Maybe smoke and mirrors? 'These aren't the calories you're looking for... move along...'
