Hi guys,
I am quiet a fanatic when it comes to workouts and frequent the gym religiously 6 times a week. Along with my exercise routines i take my diet also very seriously. However due to the stress levels in my life right now i tend to pick up a cigarette once a week. nothing serious let me remind u its not an addiction. However i feel really guilty once i've done it, as it starts to play on mind that it will take away some of the gains i've made in muscle mass or it would prevent me from working out harder the following day or 2. So could anyone break it down for me and give me the low down on wat exactly happens due to this practice. is it really that big a deal? Does it eat away your gains etc etc ? Thank alot ahead of ur response.

Lung cancer removes all gains by default.
Smoking contracts blood flow..so you are not feeding your muscles. One a week will not do anything to your growth. However, cancer just needs one small catalyst to start the reproductive cycle to go out of whack..that one cig could do it.

By the way..an addiction does not have to be done all the time.. the fact that you reach for one when you are stressed is a sign of an addiction.

Oh..and since I have been smoking since 13 I know what I speak of.

You're addicted. Stop now before it gets serious. I am a former smoker of 14 years, 2 years off.

If it makes you feel guilty, and you feel you are not addicted, and you know it's not healthy...stop.

You may realize that you are indeed addicted, but that's okay...you can still stop.

Find something else to relieve stress.

If you are feeling guilty about it and thinking about it enough to post here, you probably should stop the behavior. I'm not going to argue whether you are addicted or not, because it doesn't matter. I'm not going to guess what harm it is doing to your body, because we don't know without a lot of testing and observation (and it still might be a guess).

The bottom line is that it sounds like a behavior that you are doing to relieve stress. And while it may be effective for short-term stress relief, it sounds like you are simply trading one stress for another. From the sound of your post, you have some anxiety or stress about your smoking.

So, to me, any short term/immediate satisfaction is wiped away by the consternation about the behavior. Why not just quit? Since you're doing it once a week, is there something else you can do do relieve stress?
