I just feel the need to say this...

...after reading a LOT of posts about what you SHOULD NOT EAT, period, i feel the need to share my opinion (and it's just that-an opinion)

If i can grow it in my garden or an orchard,
(pardon my bluntness) slaughter it out of a pasture or henhouse,
or pick it out of a tree
and it is widely accepted that it is "food" (ie, you can technically pick a spider from a hedge but i don't reccomend eating it)

i find it hard to beleive that it is bad for you.

It becomes bad for you when you drench it in processed things (a potato isn't a potato if it's crispy and came in a bag that says "Lays") (chicken breast quits being a good thing when you beer batter it and drown it in oil).

So...telling someone that strawberries are bad because they contain sugar really only makes sense if you're referring to strawberry pie filling. Seriously, if everything natural was bad, i think this species would have dies off a long time ago.

Just my 2 cents though. :)

Agreed. I'm sometimes even cook in the fat skimmed from home-made chicken stock instead of butter. <3

I feel this way about the plants at least! :)

I could argue that animal meats and products aren't so great for you, though.

When I was first starting to lose weight, I had lost about 30 pounds, and a lady asked me what I had been eating. I kind of outlined my meals for the day for her, one of which included a fruit smoothing that contained a banana. She stated, "Oh bananas are evil! Too much sugar. They will make you gain wieght." I told her pretty much the same thing...if it grows, it's good. She strongly disagreed. 7 years later, she's still as wide as she is tall, and I'm 100 pounds thinner. Case closed.

Right on! But I must add that grapes if eaten by the pound can create a problem LOL.

Right, it is always so funny when someone says you can't eat X Y or Z (especially hilarious when one of those is fresh produce, like a banana haha). You can eat anything, but some foods are more nutritious than others. You can lose weight by eating your calorie allotment of junk food every day, but you don't feel good or full.

I love the idea of only shopping the periphery at the grocery store, and focusing on buying fresh/grown foods and produce. I love the "if it grows, it's good" concept!!

Agreed makes perfect sense. We have really only changed one big thing since starting this journey and that is eating whole fresh foods and eliminating as much of the processed as possible and it's been working. Plus it tastes so much better.
  • I agree!!! I think people just need to stop telling other people what they should and should not eat. I know what I can eat, and how much of it. The only time I really want someone's input is if I ask. I don't mind someone suggesting something once in a while, but if someone looked at my diary and told me I shouldn't eat strawberries, then I would probably laugh in their face. How I'm eating is working perfectly for me and I will not change it for anyone! I have lost 32 lbs in about 2 months. I think I am doing fine! lol

ps. Iv'e definitely eaten cherry pie, cake and other things (in moderation of course) since i started, and still losing weight to this day! I personally think it's bad to deprive yourself, it sets you up for failure. You have to splurge once in a blue moon. I had a "fat" day yesterday and I'm still down 3 lbs this week!! Everything works differently for different people!

Moderation is key. I lost the weight by cutting my portions, eating healthier snacks and exercising. I don't believe in giving up whole food groups (like carbs) in order to lose weight. I needed to do something that I could actually sick with for the rest of my life. I was telling someone last week about eating grapes for a snack. And they told me that grapes were a fattening and had too much sugar. Go figure :)

Maybe for that person you were speaking to it is too much sugar. Everyone is different.

While I subscribe to the philosophy that if it is grown in the ground and can be eaten right off the plant or tree or had a mother then it is safe to eat - there are foods my body can not tolerate and the "in moderation" philosophy does not work for me.

Personally my body is so sensitive to sugar (yes, even natural sugar) that I will show a gain on the scale from eating MOST fruits.

I fill my plate with fats, protein and lots of vegetables. The only fruit I eat is berries, melons and apples. This is what MY body can tolerate.

Coming on the heels of the "great grape debate" with my friend, I confess to being a little sensitive about this matter :) So I am sorry if my "in moderation" philosophy was not clear. Obviously if you've discovered that certain foods cause problems, whether it be illness, etc, then even moderation in those foods won't work. I was speaking more generally, in terms of labeling foods as inherently bad and to be avoided at all costs, as opposed to including them in your meal plan "in moderation". The guy giving me the grape grief was trying to convince me that grapes are little purple monsters designed to keep people fat.......sorry, I wasn't buying it! However, if he had approached it from the "they make ME gain" angle, I would have been more understanding of his position (and probably less riled up when the original banana post was made!!!)

Different strokes for different folks. I never had fruit in my house too much before. But I can tell you 100% that when I get hungries at 9:00 am, a peach is my best friend. Used to be scavenge up some quarters from the bottom of my purse or my car & snickers & I would retreat to a quiet rendevous in my office. For me, making little changes & finding that those "good for you" foods really do taste pretty darn good. My life has changed and my habits have changed.

My verdict... if it grows... it's better than eating Snickers
