Okay, so how come some days I have very noticeable abs, but other days, I look like I have a keg?! haha not exactly, but you know what I mean. It's so inconsistent! I want abs all the time :P ! Anyone else have this problem? I had one of my MFP buddies refer to her abs as "morning abs" lol :D !

What gives?

I'm nowhere near abs yet but I have the same thing. Skinnier right when I wake up.

It can be any number of things.

Hydration. Being fuller. Water retention. Etc.

If you want abs all the time, you have to build up the muscles and lose more fat.

From one of my friends who is grounded from the playground and can't post in here, but was able to see your question:

"aw, that's not a dumb question... I've had this happen, recently even. Mine come right back when I eat right and workout."

What is really sad is when you workout for months to get ready for a beach vacation, have some nice looking abs, then go on said vacation eat too much salty crap and drink too much beer and suddenly nice abs are GONE.

The difference between major ab definition and a hint of ab definition, especially in women is water. At 18% BF (lowest considered not underweight for women) you're probably only see abs when a little dehydrated. Women who have them consistently are usually in the 14% range.

*This is all IMO based on pictures and the blogs I read. I'm not an expert.

the leaner you get the more noticeable the fluctuations get. Sometimes I'll wake up with a tummy just because I decided to have a microwave (read: high sodium) dinner the night before. its also the little things that you probably aren't tracking.. potassium, sugar, fluctuations in water intake, etc. that's why a lot of body builders dehydrate before a competition... so that the little things cant change the definition of their muscles. could also be extra food in your gut that your body is still processing

If I need to be dehydrated and have a very, very low bf% to have visible abs, that doesn't sound too healthy or the way I want to live. I'll take having a sexy tummy instead.
  • I feel your pain! When my abs are "out"i just wish i could have a pause button and keep them there! but no matter what they always seem to fade its just not fair :(

I don't think any one said you MUST be dehydrated to see her abs, nor mine! I have a healthy BF, anywhere from 12- 18% depending on where I am in my training cycle. In the morning you could wash clothes on my abs! But by the end of the day I appear to have swallowed a mini-watermelon. The truth of the matter is that the leaner you are the more all these little things affect your body. And that was the point most people made here.
I will take my SEXY AB covered tummy that I work for and be proud (and maybe bloated by night time) any day!
  • yes sir...or ma'am....the ab thing is ultra common. MOST people simply don't have flat abs once evening rolls around. Just doesn't happen because the food causes the stomach to expand and then your abs are gone until the food is gone. At least this is my experience.

It's just water retention, bloat, your body is holding more water on some days over others. If your consistent with your calorie deficit diet. Then your definitely not gaining any weight.

People tend to look leaner and have more definition in the morning, due to lack of fluids because of sleep. Then your body softens up throughout the day since your drinking fluids again.
