Ever since I was younger I have had Scoliosis. The days I cant go to the gym, I usually do workout routines at home but am finding that my back is usually killing me after even if I wear my back brace during it. Anyone have any workout suggestions that wont be so hard on my back??

Thanks,
Brittney

I have Scoliosis as well, and I find that when my back hurts I can always ride my recumbant exercise bike. That way I am not leaning forward thus creating more strain on my back.

Do you see a physical therapist? I'd ask your doc if you can get a referral for a visit. Those guys really know their stuff and they could recommend lots of things to not only get you in shape but improve your back pain. It's really hard to guess at that, but I want to say aerobics would probably be ok, even a step. But really, get a physical therapist's advise.

I've had scoliosis since jr high. They discovered it too late in my growing to do surgery, so I've had to work around it my whole life. I have two curves, somewhere around 25 and 35 degrees. What I've found is that the stronger your core muscles (Abs) are, the less is hurts. I've got about 4-6 inches of height wound up in my spine, so everything gets kinda squished near my lungs and heart.

Try working more specifically on muscles in your abs, and the groups that support your spine, just start out slowly and work up to more weight. It's a little frustrating at first, but the stronger you get, the less it should hurt.

Most of what I do now is running, and I find the right shoe makes a world of difference when I work out.

I have minor scoliosis...I think you'll find as you get stronger, your back will feel better. My back feels better all round when I'm working out regularly. A few weeks ago due to various circumstances, I went about a week without working out, and was really sore, to the point of not sleeping well. Now that I'm back at it, all is good again.

The back pains affect me for the rest of the day. I go to college along with working at a daycare as a toddler teacher so there is constant lifting there. Just need some ideas so my day overall can be better.

My back hurts sometimes when i do sit-ups, or anything that involves me laying on the floor so i love to do the walking routines with Leslie Sansone on exercise t.v. Doing the 3mi routine gets your heart going, trust me:) It's great that your wearing your brace, because i was too vain when i was little and was terrified of being embarrassed by it so i would only put it on when i had an extremely painful backache. I wish'd i had. My back could have looked perfectly straight:( People say they don't notice it, but i know i have it and it bothers me to this day.
  • I don't know much of anything about Scoliosis but,I do know water helps a lot of people with injuries. They recommend that people and even sometimes animals do little exercises in the water because it puts less strain on the muscles around the injury site. So,maybe that will help you. They often offer water aerobics classes at Athletic clubs.

I have it too. Have you seen a dr about it? I use to have a ton of problems with it and had to go to physical therapy for 6 months. They said every time I worked out, (I was very fit at the time) I was involuntarily favoring one side of my body where my back was curved so one side was way muscular and one side was weak causing tons of pinched nerves and stuff. So they gave me some particular exercises to do and told me I will pretty much have to do them my whole life. But they also said to try to do a lot of workouts where you are working one side at a time instead of both at the same time. (If that makes sense) That was all 10 years or so ago and I have very little problems now.
