I'm currently taking:

2-multis
2-omega 3 fish oil
1-vitamin b12
1-vitamin c

I got to thinking. Is taking the multi redundant in this routine?

Not really. Generally your body will use what it needs and flush the rest.

No, but I was advised to take mine with food for better absorption.

Be advised that over-consumption of certain vitamins can be toxic.

It depends on how balanced your diet is. Why take 2 multivitamins a day? Most multis are 1 a day. Your body doesn't need 200% of it's daily vitamin C...so you're just pissing out a pill (and $$$) in my non-professional opinion.
  • A brand new study came out today, it showed in older women that they have a higher chance of dying, granted that did not account life style or anything.. anyways the doctor said to be careful, too many vitamins are overkill and actually can hurt your health..Id ask your doctor

I just read yesterday about a study done on older women who had a slightly higher risk of dying when they were long term regular multivitamin takers. Scary. Try to get as much as possible from whole foods and only supplement what you absolutely have to, and under doctor advisement.
  • NO! I use and sell Shaklee vitamins and weight loss meals...
I started cause I loved how much better I felt when I started 4 years
ago. Our food these days just isn't the same and our diets just
dont cut it. Very few people eat all the right food and in the
amounts your body needs to get your full dose of daily vitamins.
I do want to say though that some vitamins are worse for you then
taking no vitamin at all. Research the vitamins and company to make
sure they are safe w/o lead, additives, and and fillers. Crazy what some
    companys use in there products.
You can find great suppliments out there... just do your reasearch.
    Good luck to you.

PS. Again... this "study" that just came out...
first... how many times does a study come out and
everyone freaks out and then years later they change
what they think cause a new study comes out. Like I said above
research your companies, call them, ask others. I have a study
that was done by Berkley that showed users of the same vitamins
I use were healthier because of vitamin use and that some people
were more unhealthy from taking other vitamins (the bad ones) and
others were in the middle. Better in health then people taking bad
vitamins. Like anything in life... we have to do the best we can. You can
eat what you think is well and good and find out later it makes you sick
cause it has been sprayed, altered, or came from animals who were
given something etc.... Eat organic and healthy and if your like me and
can't do that all the time then suppliment what is nessesary in your own
    personal diet.

    Off my soapbox... lol.

i think it is just a waste of money when you overtake, you cannot take in more than 100%. Even one multi-vitamin that is 100% everything is overkill because you eat a lot of vitamins a day also. My doctor told me to take a centrum junior or a flintstones because there was way too much in other vitamins.

Depending upon the multis, the vitamin C and b12 may be redundant. How many mg of each are within your multi(s)?

Actually, the recommendation for Vitamin C is absurdly low, 500 to even 1000% of the daily recommendation isn't a bad thing.

Untrue. Vitamin D for instance is toxic in overdose, so care should be taken.

Why are you taking two multivitamins? Unless they are multivitamin and mineral, containing a lot of calcuim, they are almost always one a day.
  • My vitamins read take 2 as well. Its just how they were broken up. You can take the full does in the morning or I take one in the morning and one with lunch. Some vitamins bottles do this and some dont.

So now even the good stuff is bad for us.

    When will this end?

Do they WANT people to stop eating and drinking EVERYTHING?!

If the democrats had their way, food and nutrients wold go to only those on welfar, everyone making over $15,000 per year would have to stand in line for cheese.

I would rethink the Flintstones or Centrum..... or anything on this list. Not that I think the Food and Drug Admin is always right but they do test our products.

Thats why I use the ones I use..... got to research yourselves, Doctors don't always have the best advice. Good luck to you friend.

Doctors are learning everyday like us.

This. If the dosage for your multivitamin is two pills, you are only taking one dose, which is fine. However, if your multi isn't giving you enough B12 and C, it might be time to switch multivitamins. I made sure I found one that has 100% of the iron I need because there are plenty out there that don't.

Omega-3 fish oil is good for you. My husband takes it to help his cholesterol.

if you want to maximize absorption of the pills look up drug/food interaactions with them. drinking or eating something with a pill can help absorb it better (eg. vitamin c with iron helps absorb iron better)

also make sure the vitamins your taking dont counter act any meds your taking http://www.tree.com/health/supplements-drug-interactions.aspx there is a pretty simple list

i'm also taking vitamins but i need to get some more
    biotin
    b6
    multi vitamins
    b12

Try to incorporate more of these nutrients in your daily diet. Keep in mind that it's best to consume a variety of foods, instead of just taking a multivitamin, to make sure that your body is able to absorb the micronutrients properly.

    Risks of Overdoing It
As is the case with all dietary supplements, the decision to use supplemental vitamins should not be taken lightly, says Vasilios Frankos, Ph.D., Director of FDA's Division of Dietary Supplement Programs.

"Vitamins are not dangerous unless you get too much of them," he says. "More is not necessarily better with supplements, especially if you take fat-soluble vitamins.” For some vitamins and minerals, the National Academy of Sciences has established upper limits of intake (ULs) that it recommends not be exceeded during any given day. Not that I'm even about to get into a political argument on MFP, but your comment, in my entitled opinion, is the stupidest **** I have ever read in my entire life....and that's saying a lot, just so you know.

You would need to take 100 times the recommended dose of Vitamin D every day for several months in order to see any type of toxic effect. Toxic effects have only been shown in doses higher than 50,000 IU's a day for several months, and some studies have shown no toxic effects at high doses. Too little or too much of anything can be a bad thing.

Also, a lot of the better multivitamins break their daily doses into several a day.
