budget cuts means less art class, music lessons, gym time, home ec, etc.

what do you think school are teaching that is unnecessary and what do you wish they taught instead?

I could've skipped art class and gone with music and sports exclusively, but my brother is a professional comic writer/artist so I'm sure he appreciated art class.

I find it interesting that I never had a single shop class or home economics class. I guess it was just the times I was raised in. Also never dissected a frog*.

    * Did dissect a worm, crayfish, and fetal pig...

I wish kids were required to take a financial management class. My school required us to take a basic economics class, but never once were the topics of personal financial management ever brought up. Thankfully, my family is very responsible about their money and taught me from a young age to live within my means, how to save, how to balance my bank accounts, how to calculate interest, etc. When I got to college, a lot of the other kids I knew didn't understand how credit cards worked and got themselves into serious trouble with far too much debt and would consistently buy things they couldn't pay for.

I went to a private college prep school. We didn't take art, music or home ec in high school. I got my exercise by participating in after school sports. I learned home economics at home. Worked great for me!

Financial skills are important, but that is something that should be taught as part of government/civics or math, not a separate class.

If you asked me then (high school) I would have said a class that would teach me how to get laid would have been #1 on the list.

However, the HS I went to taught some practicle skills. I learned welding, small engine repair, auto repair and butchering in high school. So, if my prefered career choice wouldn't have worked out I had something I could do to earn a living.

Lifelong health!! Eating right, exercising, making good choice, etc..!

Maybe a driving class like they used to have?

Money managing! Like balancing a checkbook or understanding loans and credit cards.

    More art and music! :)

As far removed from school as I am, I'm not sure what's left to remove; however, I have never understood the mandatory requirement for geometry, when there are very few fields outside of engineering that would ever use it...yet they don't require (personal) accounting, which every single person who ever has a job and makes money should know.

    In highschool?

Personal finances for sure, and not just how compound interest works, like accounting and wealth growth and debt management.

I really think gym/health should be mandatory the whole way through. And get the gym teachers to have legitimate training/nutriotion certifications.

More involved career selection classes instead of the BS we get served now for half a semester.

Aaaaaaand critical thinking should be MANDA-EFFIN-TORY. So many problems in society could be alleviated if more people thought for themselves instead of being sheep...

I totally agree with this....money makes the world go round & we leave school so unprepared in that respect. I learnt basic budgeting from watching my mother, a lot of people don't even have that.

...And it would be great if they steered you towards a career path, I studied all sorts of subjects that mean nothing to me now & left school with no idea of what I wanted to be. I'm 36 now & still have no idea :ohwell:

    Subjects/skills I wish they taught:
    - Fiscal responsibility (credit cards, loans, budgets, etc.)
    - Financial planning (long term and short term)
    - Business basics (including teamwork and cooperation)
    - Etiquette and courtesy (should be taught at home, but a lot of parents apparently don't know it, so can't teach it)
    - Home economics (to both genders)
    - Basic outdoor living and survival skills
    - Basic home/vehicle maintenance skills (changing tires, oil, painting, etc.)
    - Food nutrition, diet control, and meal planning
    - Body image, confidence, composure, presentation, impact
    - Mediation and reconciliation skills (heck, relationship skills in general - particularly respect of and for others)

Subjects I wish they didn't teach:
    - None

Sex education. Parents obviously aren't teaching it enough and kids are really stupid about it these days.

I find Home Economics to be a rather useless course and think Money Management, Ethics and CPR should all be requirements.
