This is my first time posting on here so I am not sure if this is the right place?
I have a 10 month old I am still nursing (only a few times a day now) but I am ready to get off this baby weight off. I need to know how many calories I should be eating to not loose my milk supply but to get this weight off.
Thanks for you help.

They tell you not to go under 1800. But if you are really active then you will need more. I'm eating about 2000/day and losing weight. And remember not to lose more than 2lbs a week. It releases toxins and can diminish your milk supply if you do. Best of luck to you!!!
  • Search for "breastfeeding" in the food database and add it daily.

My milk supply went down due to loss of calories, so be careful. I added oatmeal to breakfast everyday, that seemed to help increase my supply.

    Good luck to you!

Your local hospital or OB/GYN practice may have a nursing specialist that would be willing to answer your questions. If you used someone when you had your child, you may be familiar enough with him/her to just call and leave a message for them to call you back when they get a chance.

Good luck and congrats on the new baby!

1500 - 1800 per day is what kellymom.com recommends, but like asoune said, that is not counting exercising. breastfeeding your baby burns 200-500 calories per day. I`m a member of the FIRM believers club, and their nutrition recommendations include your weight x 10 is how many calories to maintain your weight with a SEDENTARY lifestyle.

For me, I`m 200 lbs, so that x 10 = 2000. Add 300 calories (middle of the road) for breastfeeding, and my requirements would be 2300 per day to MAINTAIN. Add in exercise, and obviously that bumps it up even more. I`m sticking to 1900 calories per day, and I lost 2 lbs last week. :) This is post-baby 3 for me, so it`s been a bit harder to come off, but watching my calories and drinking 2L of water a day is making a big difference! :)

I have an eleven month old who's still nursing a few times a day. I've been on MFP since August (when my baby was firmly established eating solids). Every day I add breast feeding to my food diary (which subtracts 300 calories). I'm sure it's different for everybody, but as far as I can tell, those extra 300 calories seem sufficient to maintain my supply while still allowing me to lose weight.

And ditto what she said - been there done that. i did the south beach diet while nursing my 2nd, and oh gravy my supply plummeted... oatmeal is one of the BEST things you can have every morning, for nursing AND for energy and feeling fuller longer.

Thanks everyone. I joined back in January when I first had my baby and couldn't figure out how to loose weight and nurse! So I am back at it again now that my daughter is older. I have had 3 babies in 4 years and I am ready to get "me" back!
I just went an added in the 300 calories for nursing a older baby and after exercise I still have 963 calories to eat tonight! Wow....that seems like so much food.
