Hi MFP ~ I on track to weight loss!!! Working out 5-6 times a week, logging all food. I know it's important to get your metabolism going in the morning. I have my coffee first thing and then I am not hungry...so to save calories I wait to eat. I know that is not the right thing to do and you should eat right when you get up.

How much or little do you need to eat to get your metabolism up and running??? What do you do??

Thanks!!!!

Depends on the person. Some people are just fine with not eating right away - others need breakfast to be their largest meal of the day.

You'll get plenty of people chiming in from both sides of the fence.

I personally don't think it really makes a difference in metabolism, given the conflicting results from different studies, but that is just my opinion.

Personally, I just spread my calories out throughout the day, and usually start with a glass of milk before I head out the door in the morning, followed with a yogurt and/or fruit an hour or so later.

If you are losing weight, you are doing it the right way for yourself.

Actually you're just fine, you don't need to eat when you get up to get your metabolism going. I used to believe this myth as well but it's simply not true and there is plenty of research and articles to support it.

I don't ingest anything besides a few cups of coffee and a lot of water every day until noon. I have easily lost 32 pounds, I'm never hungry in the morning and never have a lack of energy.

I actually find doing something active to get the blood pumping wakes me up more than food or coffee does. Just last week I started doing a low key calisthenics workout before I leave for work in the morning and love it! Just a few of your basic moves - toe touches, crunches, side bends, leg lifts, push ups, etc.

The thing with skipping breakfast for me is that I end up being really hungry later in the day and eat more than I should. I used to skip breakfast all the time then eat a huge lunch and snack on junk ALL afternoon. Now that I eat breakfast, I can eat a reasonable lunch and have one or two snacks and I'm perfectly fine.

ETA: As someone else said, we're all different. If you really want to try eating breakfast, start small. I used to feel fine on a cup of dry Cheerios but once my body got used to being fueled in the morning, I had to eat something more hearty. Now I usually have a homemade breakfast sandwich or some oatmeal with an english muffin w/ peanut butter.

I went to a weight loss Dr and his recommndation was to eat 3 meals ,balanced meals. Morning, 5 hours later and then 5 hours later. He says it stimulates the growth hormone by eating 5 hours apart and allows metabolism to work properly for you.Seems to work for me,i lost 18lbs doing that.I wasn't loosing anything prior. To each his own i guess but food for thought for sure!

I've never been a breakfast person so I'm with you on the coffee. Sometimes I do make a protein shake -- with my coffee!
I use a 24oz blender bottle so I have a good size drink that I sip as my breakfast and throughout the morning.

I read the same as you about jump-starting your metabolism in the morning so sometimes I'll force myself to eat breakfast --- oatmeal/quinoa or egg beaters with some turkey and veggies. Greek yogurt makes a good breakfast too.

    Says who?

Skipping breakfast, small lunch, that's exactly what i do, and it works like a charm for me!

Thanks eveyone! I had heard you should eat right when you get up during many of the different diets I have been on. I am going to just move on and do what is working. It's so easy to get caught up in ALL the things they say we should do for results.

I guess for the most part, eat in moderation, and move that body will equal results

    Thanks
