Has anyone used the Hungry Girl cook books?

I have three of them (just bought them), and I was wondering if anyone has had success with these books.
If you have had success with these or have used these what are your favorite recipes in the book? I am really looking to cook more and I know these are quick and simple!

  • I don't have any of the books, but I frequent their website! I also see alot of people on here mention making receipes from the site or books. I hope you enjoy them :flowerforyou:

I have one of the hungry girl cookbooks. I have had to modify some of her recipes because some of her recipes she uses a TON of processed stuff. I'm sensitive to sodium, so I change up some of the ingredients and re-calculate the caloric content. :)

I don't have the cookbooks but I do use her site. I just made the Yum Yum Brownie Muffins and they were pretty good!

SWEET! Thanks everyone! NOTE TO SELF: Take the cook books with me when I leave today :)
It will be a good day to stop at the store and gather some goodies to cook!

If you're trying to cut down on processed food, artificial sweeteners and fake stuff --- dont buy it. That's all it is :)

Some of them sound tempting and I've tried a few but I usually end up substituting better stuff and creating my own nutritional info.

I use the website as I'm not big on cookbooks.

    I like this idea!
I do not mind the processed food or anything like that, but I am the same way, I like to take a recipe and turn it into my own creation.

Some of the recipes are good for inspiration, but they contain too much artificial sweeteners, processed junk, sodium, and low-fat substitutes for me. I like real food.

My favorite recipe of hers is the Yummy Butternut Home Fries (not sure which book that was in) but it's a great twist on using squash as a side dish and has a nice sweet/spicy flavor. Hubby and I usually mix it with some cooked rice for a more hearty side dish.

Also love her desserts - the krispymallow treats and the chocolate version are both wonderful!

I like the tostada salad (or maybe its called a taco salad... I don't remember). I do try to stay away from many processed foods, but sometimes I just want to control calories and HG helps me on that.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought this. Seems like everyone on MFP raves about her food and I have a hard time finding anything healthy about it!

I stay away from Hungry Girl for this reason.
I do not think it is healthy to be eating tons of processed foods. A lot of recipes incorporate fat free items, which are pretty nefarious for many reasons.
It's definitely a personal choice though, and I have seen some that aren't so bad. For instance, her pumpkin pie recipe.

i have 2 of the 3 books... love them and enjoy her... i like to watch her show also... she does have some good stuff:)
  • I'm not a Hungry Girl fan. I had 3 books and sold them to a used bookstore. She uses far too many processed foods and for some reason I just cannot lose weight that way. Ever since I cut out 100 calories snack packs, Lean Cuisines, etc. the weight has been coming off every single week. (I'm not eating organic produce or hormone free meats = too much $$$, wish I could). Like the others have previously posted, this is just a personal preference. If you are not sensitive to processed foods and are happy with their nutritional value then go for it. I eat a few of those items here and there but try to make it the exception rather than the rule.

Her slow cooked bbq recipe is sooooo good! Even my boyfriend loves it and it's very easy:

    PER SERVING (1/2 cup): 149 calories, 1g fat, 462mg sodium, 10g carbs, <0.5g fiber, 9g sugars, 22.5g protein -- PointsPlus® value 3*

This shredded BBQ chicken is FANTASTIC over salads, piled onto light buns, stuffed inside high-fiber tortillas with (rinsed) cole slaw, or eaten all by itself. Yummmmmm!

    Ingredients:
1 1/2 lb. raw boneless skinless lean chicken breasts, halved
    1 cup canned tomato sauce
    1/2 cup ketchup
2 tbsp. plus 2 tsp. brown sugar (not packed)
2 tbsp. plus 2 tsp. cider vinegar
    2 tsp. garlic powder
Optional: red pepper flakes, to taste

    Directions:
Place all ingredients except the chicken in the crock pot. Stir until mixed. Add chicken and coat well with the sauce.

Cover and cook on high for 3 - 4 hours OR on low for 7 - 8 hours, until chicken is fully cooked.

Remove all the chicken and place it in a bowl. Shred each piece using two forks -- one to hold the chicken in place and the other to scrape across the meat and shred it. Return the shredded chicken to the crock pot, and mix well with the sauce.

If you're serving a group, keep the crock pot on its lowest setting, so the chicken stays warm. If you like, season to taste with red pepper flakes. Eat up!

    MAKES 7 SERVINGS

I don't particularly have a problem with processed foods but I do tend to substitute "light" for fat free and adjust the calories appropriately.

Some of my particular favorites are:

double-o-cinnamon apple breakfast bowl (which I think is absolutely amazing)
crazy pineapple salmon teriyaki (which I also thing is amazing and I don't even really like salmon all that well)
    ez pineapple chicken
    crispity crunchy drumsticks
and several of the egg mugs (I have some sort of egg mug 3 or 4 times a week for breakfast)
