I recently learned that I really need to up my protein intake. I was told that whey protein would make me gain weight and that soy was better. I also want to know everyones favorite protein i HATE the chalkyness of some proteins.

I prefer pea protein. None of the hormones and additives that are found oftentimes in Whey and Soy proteins.0

Whey protein will not make you gain weight unless you consume more calories than you burn. That goes for ALL foods.
I use whey protein because I want to cut down on soy intake. There's mixed reviews on the link between soy and breast cancer, but I'd rather not take the risk. My grandma had it so I'm at risk for it.0 -
I love cows so I go for the soy!0

I use whey protein - and I have not gained weight. I use optimum nutrition - chocolate flavor - and I mix it with almond milk. Yum.0

whatever doesn't make you fart.0

My personal trainer told me she wants me using Whey so I'm listening to her! I prefer mixing it with nonfat milk over water, it tastes way better.0

My Doctor and Nutritionist recommended Whey Protein.
I have not gained weight, in fact just the opposite.
High protein diet has been great for me along with fiber, water, watching the fat, simple carbs and sodium all combined with exercise and I am on my way to where I want to be!
Best of Luck!0 -

Your "no soy" source is Mercola. You know-- the Quackwatch.com regular. From what I've researched, anything that guy advocates, you should do the opposite.
For the OP, your body utilizes animal proteins better so go with whey if given the choice.0 -
Dehydrated Peanut Butter. So neither. But I REALLY despise the way Whey tastes, so it would be soy between the two.0

So do we believe Mercola or Harvard? I really have seen research on both sides of this (obviously proof is right here) so I think we can agree there are good and bad things about soy. Maybe the key to soy is moderation...so using it every day as a protein supplement may or may not be the best plan.
I still vote for whey. Chocolate whey.0 -
I like Spiru-tein. It's plant-based from Spirulina. They have a lot of flavors; not chalky at all. I have seen an unsweetened vanilla., but most of the flavors are sweetened, so it does have 14g carbs per serving (I know you carb nazis won't touch it), but bc I myself do not fear carbs, it's fine for me.
I've tried vanilla, chocolate, cookies and cream, chocolate peanut butter, and tangerine. I make shakes with the protein powder, ice, 1/2 banana, 1/4 cold brewed coffee, and 1/2 cup almond milk.
Calories range from 96 to 120 per scoop, depending on the flavor, and it contains 14g protein. This is not as much as whey protein, but I avoid all dairy derivatives bc they cause acne, bloating, and headaches for me.
15-serving cans are $22.99 at Sprouts. They have larger cans too, presumably a better deal, but I don't know the specifics.
I've tried a soy protein (forgot the name), and Trader Joe's Hemp Vanilla, neither of which I liked.
BTW, I returned the Hemp Protein to TJs for a refund without a problem when I didn't like it. The soy one was an individual packet.0 -

oh yes, PB2 brand is delicious. Sometimes I blend that with dark chocolate almond milk, coffee, 1/2 banana and ice.

Yup! I go through a case a month! Cheaper then most of the other powders, no fillers, no nasty stuff, tastes great, loaded with protein, no worries about nasty whey products, or too much soy, or anything... LOL0

Always LOVE all of the conflicting info found on the internet. NOT!
Unfortunately, I don't have the answers either. Hope to find out!
I have tried Spiru-tein & I really did like it a lot, just can't afford it! :grumble:

I have whey because it's standard (and the brand I use is DELICIOUS). There's too much conflicting research on the effects of daily soy consumption for me to put 2 scoops of it in my body a day, I'll wait until something conclusive comes out. Soy is healthy in moderate amounts, that much is for sure - though tofu is not a health food!0

THis is great that you asked a question on this particular topic because I am just starting ot get active and was thinking I'd like to get a protein powder and make a shake after my workouts BUT am undecieded.... I am not a big fan of dairy and consume very little of it a day but know that whey is a good protein powder, and soy is good in moderation but this spiru-tein sounds interesting, so I will check out my local health food store tomorrow and see what they have, thanks for the input!!0
