Polar makes the best HRMs:

I have one of the FT7s, they are great and inexpensive (relatively for a quality HRM).
It will tell you how long you worked out, average hr, calories burned and bunch of other things.
The site I linked to has some of the best prices and service for HRMs.0 -
HRM = Heart Rate Monitor. There's all different kinds available ... some with more options than others ... depending on what you want and need. Most come with chest straps and a wristwatch unit that displays your heart rate, duration, calories burned, etc.
Check Amazon ... they have all kinds. I just got a Polar FT7 last week and so far, I'm loving it!0 -
It's a heart rate monitor. A good one will have a chest strap that you wear & the read out comes on a wrist watch looking thing. I have a Polar FT4 & I LOVE it! You can fing them at Target or online (Amazon.com). A good one will cost between $75-100.0

It's a heart rate monitor. There is a strap that goes around your chest and it transmits your heart rate to a watch that you wear, and it gives you your beats per minute. You input your weight, height and gender into the watch and it uses that info plus your heart rate to calculate calories burned while you are exercising. It is a much better tool to go by than the machine read in the gym or the MFP calorie calculator. I have a Polar FT4 I got off Amazon for $60 and it's one of the best purchases I've ever made.0

Are they more accurate that the gym machines?0

I got a Sigma, loving it. It has a calorie counting feature, too. Not all do this automatically...0

Are they more accurate that the gym machines?
YES! Much more. It is nice to see while you are working out how many calories you are burning too.
I did a treadmill for 20 minutes and said I burnt 150...My HRM said 225.0 -
Are they more accurate that the gym machines?
Yes - definitely. Because they calculate calories burned based on your personal info and your heart rate while exercising.
The machines are really just a guesstimate.
I have a New Balance N4 HRM that I bought and Target and I LOVE it!!0 -
Are they more accurate that the gym machines?
Hi - I personally find they are a lot more accurate. The MFP and gym machines wildly over-estimate my cal burn compared to my HRM so having a HRM really pushes me to work harder. I think a HRM is more accurate because it's based on more personalised settings. Perhaps if you enter all your data on a gym machine you'll get a better idea of the burn rate but I still like to go with my HRM because it also tells me when I need to work harder (i.e. when I get fitter and have to do more to get the same HR!!).0 -
Way more accurate because its based on your body weight, height etc... It knows what your resting heart rate is and tracks your calorie burn based on YOU. Not in general0
