Looking for a new exercise program

I am about 6 months into my healthier lifestyle. I never really had much weight to lose, but wanted to get fit, tone, healthier. I'm 32, 5'2", starting weight was 123.6, current weight is 114.6, but have increased my muscle mass and dropped fat mass and body fat percentage. I started with Power 90 and then when I finished that moved onto P90X (both at-home programs). Throughout, I improved my diet and have really worked at adding protein into my diet. I have 2 weeks of P90X left and am wondering where to go from here. I have totally become accustomed to having a daily workout schedule (which video to do on which day) and you do the program for 90 days. I feel like without a program or schedule, I will not continue to maintain my healthy lifestyle. I'm not looking to go any more extreme than P90X. I don't like videos that incorporate dance, cuz I suck at dancing, not very adventurous in that respect. I love jogging, but mostly can only do it on the treadmill because it's AZ and friggin hot 9 months out of the year, and because I can't take my 4 & 6 year old with me for a 3 mile jog around the neighborhood. Anyone have any suggestions?

How about New Rules of Lifting for Women (NROLFW)? It's a 6 month program if you're lifting 3x per week. They suggest 3x, but 2x is OK, too - obviously the program would take longer if done 2x per week instead of 3x per week. It sounds like it fits in perfectly with what you're doing (increasing muscle mass & decreasing fat mass) and it can be done at home. My hubby and I just started it this week...well - he started New Rules of Lifting and I started New Rules of LIfting for Women. The plan is laid out in a book by Lou Schuler.

EDIT: Oh - and there's a group here on the Fitness & Exercise message board for NROLFW!

I think any of the Beach Body programs would work. I like p90x the best.

If you are looking for something not so expensive, X-Factor:ST by Weider is a good body weight exercise program.

Get Infinite Intensity or Never Gymless by Ross Enamait at www.rosstraining.com or www.rossboxing.com

Try the sample 50 day routine. Be amazed at what a toned beast you become.

And never look for another fitness book or routine again.

P90X2 is coming out by Christmas. I'm doing a modified P90X program that a friend made up. I jog Tues, Thurs & Sat. Mon and Wed alternate the P90X weight lifting videos. Fri is a P90X cardio video. Sun is rest or stretch. Every 4th week is all cardio - running and videos with no weight lifting. We just couldn't give up running and didn't have time to double up.

You may also like Chalene Extreme. Similar to P90x, though workouts are a bit shorter at about 45 minutes, and different trainer style. Gives you alternating strength and cardio days. I like P90X better, by use Chalene when I need a change, I hate dancy stuff, so Chalene Extreme is okay, as its not alot of tricky footwork. :)

What kind of weights do you need?
  • Jess,
I agree, no dancing for me. Programs like Flirty Girl Fitness make me feel ashamed to even watch the commercial. I am not into moving my body in sexy ways and I suck at dancing. I am doing this : http://www.beachbody.com/product/tj_how_it_works.do Click the vid on top of the page. Its like kick boxing and heavy aerobics I think. Tell me what you think...

I want to do this when I'm done with my running program! I have P90X and I want to do it, but I don't want to give up on running. I love how this sounds!!! Thanks for sharing.

So, I don't really like P90X. I'm completeing the program, but most days the workouts are over an hour! I really don't think I can commit that much time, and I don't think I would really enjoy P90X2. Maybe Chalene Extreme or Turbo Jam would be better. I know Chalene Extreme is not as "dancy" as maybe TurboFire. I think I might have to look outside of the Beachbody programs, though I hate to, cause Beachbody has been an awesome springboard for me.

We're using dumbbells, an olympic barbell and plates, & our Body Solid home gym (for lat pull-downs, wood chops, & seated rows). I've seen conversations on the NROLFW thread here about people making modifications when they didn't have the equipment that was used/shown in the book, though.

I'm not sure if you were asking me about this...but if you were, I can't speak to TurboJam because I've never done it. I DO have TurboFire by Chalene, though and it's a kick-boxing/aerobic workout...definitely a choreographed routine. I don't think I'd consider it dancing, though (dancing in my mind is more like Zumba). I use TurboFire (and DVDs from other instructors) for a cardio workout on days I can't get to the gym for a class. I think they're fun and I burn a decent amount of calories doing them. Hope that helps!
