Suit Alterations

This one's a question for the guys-- I have a couple of suits that I bought about 3 years ago from a certain establishment that "guarantees" free tailoring for life. Having lost 45 pounds, and aiming to lose a lot more, is it even worth it to try to get my suits altered?

On the one hand, I definitely need a suits to wear for work-- not every day-- but once a week or so for meetings, etc., and the suits in question are falling off of me now. I managed to get the pants belted and tightened this morning for one of them, but it looks terrible-- I'll definitely be staying at my desk most of the day (or wearing the now ginormous coat to cover up). If I can get the suits altered, they might last me through several more pounds because I hate to buy a new suits (EXPENSIVE) before I reach my ultimate goal (though this might not be feasible-- waiting until then to get new suits!).

On the other hand, I've heard a few guys say that once you lose 40 pounds or so, forget it-- the suit cannot be saved. It cannot be altered enough to fit and still maintain the integrity (unless you want your side pockets to become the new back pockets). Also, I've read/heard that the "free tailoring for life" policy at this is misleading-- if they actually have to cut the suit or do significant alterations, you're not covered and you'll get charged (up to $50 per item, according to some web chatter)...if I'm going to spend that kind of money just for a temporary fix, well...

Help?

  • I doubt you can alter the suits for that much of a size difference. But department store sell suits in pieces, (I.e. find you pants size... then find the same style jacket in your size) these suits are usually significantly cheaper than suits that need tailoring.

I'm not a guy - but I am a tailor. I've made oodles of suits and coats. Here's your answer: after 45 pounds weight loss, you won't be able to refit the pants. If the crotch doesn't fit, give the pants away. As for jackets, there is more flexibility. A good tailor might be able to refit a jacket. You need to go to a tailor and let him/her look at it.

While you continue to lose weight, consider jackets and pants instead of suits. You will be able to make a jacket work through several sizes of pants.

Some of the people who buy the "alterations for life" deal will never use it, so you should definitely take advantage. I'd just go i there and say "Need some alterations done" and don't go into the weight loss/plan to lose more details.

Get your money's worth, because a lot of people out there aren't and that's what these deals count on - that most people won't be bothered because the styles change etc.

As for the cost, They can't charge you without warning you. Worst case scenario is they say "That'll be $50" and you can either take it or leave it at that point.
