what to do when you can't eat

I've been having an issue with not being able to keep food down for the last couple of weeks. Some foods stay down okay if I eat them in small quantities. Others...forget it. I'm having some trouble getting in all 1200 calories because I'm fearful that I eat too much I'm going to lose it anyway. I went to the doctor yesterday, and she sent me for an abdominal ultrasound and bloodwork today. The ultrasound tech said she thought she saw gallstones, but nothing is official until the radiologist reads the scan. I should hear back early next week, and we'll proceed from there. If it's gallstones, the gallbladder will probably have to come out. It could also be an issue with my hiatal hernia, so who knows?

In the meantime, I'm eating mostly soft or liquid stuff (I can keep it down pretty well). Veggies are kind of rough on my stomach, as well as meat. I had an ice cream bar last night, and while I didn't throw up, my belly did hurt a little today. It makes it really hard to get in 1200 calories, much less exercise calories. I have no energy right now because of it. I'm considering scaling back my exercise to just some time on the treadmill (no incline, moderate pace) and a little bit of weight lifting on a lighter weight than I've been using, mainly just to keep from losing the momentum I had going. Anybody have other suggestions? I'll probably talk to someone at my gym, too, to see if they can recommend anything. I just don't want to burn too many calories since I'm having trouble keeping down the calories I am eating, but I also don't want to stop exercising altogether.

I'd welcome any ideas!

Don't worry about exercise right now. Take care of yourself and your body first, as obviously something is wrong. Once you get it sorted out with your doctor, then go back to restricted calories and exercise. I wish you luck!

I'm sorry to hear that you're having stomach issues. I had my gallbladder removed 2 years ago for extreme pain after eating anything. I could keep things down but I wouldn't want to eat because of the pain. Unfortunately, most calorie-dense items are going to make your pain worse (high-fat items like peanut butter). Just keep trying different foods until you find ones that don't cause pain/nausea, and just stick to those items.

It's tempting to keep exercising thru this, but you can take a break, even for a couple of weeks, without losing the progress you've made. After having my tonsils removed last year, I didn't exercise for two weeks, very surely overate, but ended up losing 7 pounds in 2 weeks. My body just needed a break from the constant large calorie deficit. So my vote is for you to take a break from exercising and dieting (if you can keep anything down).

Good luck, and I hope you get the answers you need from the doctor. :flowerforyou:

It's frustrating because I finally start taking care of myself and my stupid body rebels! :grumble: I am hoping, though, that it is my gallbladder, because at least that is a simple fix. There are many other things it could be that would be worse! When my sister had her gallbladder out, she had to wait 3 weeks before they could do hers, and she couldn't keep anything down but liquids. She lost a lot of weight. I'm hoping they can do it sooner rather than later if that's what it is. I don't mind the weight loss, but I hate feeling like this. I have zero energy, and I hate it. I was feeling so good before! I know I'll get back to it, but not exercising makes me feel lethargic and down in the dumps! :frown:

Thanks for the advice. I probably will lay off the exercise except for maybe a leisurely walk or bike ride close to home, just so I can feel like I did SOMETHING. Definitely don't have the energy for the elliptical!

My mom's answer to nausea/vomiting and the dehydration that comes with it- Jello.

Protein, sugar and water, the three nutrients most needed by your body. fat probably won't help your stomach right now anyway. In addition to eating it after its gelled, you can also double the water and not boil it and you'll have this thin syrupy stuff you can drink like cool aid if you keep it at room temp. If you refrigerate it, the gelatin will clump and either stick to the sides of the container or the bottom (yuk).
