I went to the gym everyday this week and my body is so sore. My question is are you suppose to keep working the sore areas to get through it , or do you wait for it to stop hurting then work it out again?

Replies

  • My husband was in the army and he yells at me if I baby myself when my muscles are sore. He says it's better to work through it.

the way i look at it is, go one and work out, don't use this as another excuse. this is a good sore, and you can try just doing 20 minutes of not-as-crazy cardio.. you'll feel better, i did

I say fight through it. Your body is being challeged and you are using new muscles. They will be sore.

I find that if i'm sore to the point where i can barely move (like doing exercises that you've never done, or pushing yourself too hard), i'll take an average of 3 days off until i can move like a normal person :) (no hobbling or limited range of motion).
If its minor pain like you forgot to strech or its not really interfering w/ your day, you could probably work out the kinks.
If its my legs, instead of running or a brisk walk, i'll walk at a slower pace and maybe some inclines- after about 30 minutes, the pain is gone. If its my arms or chest, i would cut back on the amount of weights.
Basically listen to your body, go slow, take an asprin or tylenol if needed, 2 or 3 days might be needed to recoup

After my first day of boot camp I thought I ws going to die but I worked through it & I felt better for doing so. I say work through it the best that you can.
  • In the past I would have given my body a rest if my body was sore but since doing the 30 DS I have realised that you can push through it much easier than I ever would have imagined I am on day 5 today and after day 1 I couldn't walk or drive properly but I carried on and today I don't feel a thing.

I do a little of both, when I'm sore it helps to do a light work out to get the blood moving. But give the body a day to recover before hitting it hard again.

My best advice? Invest in a massage to relieve some of the soreness...but keep on working through it!

I do take one day off a week per my trainers advice. I find it really helps me in the coming week.

    Good luck!!

I always feel better after I exercise if I am sore from the previous day.

Bit of both, and it depends really what you're doing. If you're using weights, you need to rest your muscles between sessions. Similarly, it's probably not a great idea, particularly early on in training, to try to run every day. Alternating muscle groups, or mixing up your exercise profile, is probably the most sensible way to do things.

Never work the same muscle group two days in a row. Also, give your body one day a week of no working out. On this day, you can go for a brisk 30 min walk or something. Proper stretching will help with some soreness, and as your body gets used to exercise, it will get less and less sore.

NO, work your body for 2 days 3 max, then give that part of your body a rest, so weights, then go for a run or treadmill, cross trainer for the next day or two.

Your muscles are being torn, a good thing, but they need to nit back together.

Less chance of injury and at the end of the day it is your choice, if you ahve been doing this for a while, then what works for you, but with all the reading I am doing at the moment about the human body and how it works, I want the best from my body and to get that I have rest days, but my rest days can be doing something different..

People have been known to do weights all week, but have weekend rest.

What ever you do, try and get at least one or two rest days in a week, your muscles need to nit together...

    Have a look at this...................

I used to get sore , then started training through it and don't get sore unless I really change up my programme (which is what you're really meant to do) DOMS - Day Onset Of Muscle Soreness.

If I start weight training (away from my usual cross training cardio routines) and really work hard then I'll be sore... I can't say whats best, but the soreness is from all the micro tears in the muscle. You do need time to recover which is why cross training is advised... switch between muscle groups... that way you're muscles heal and actually get bigger/toned/stronger! :)

I should word this better but i'm tired!!! :)

Make sure you have a rest day between workouts. Recovery time is a good thing.

Ditto to not working the same muscle group on consecutive days. Personally the only muscle group I work twice in a week is abs. If you don't allow sufficient recovery time you could delay your progress. Besides, if you're in crippling pain all the time, how realistic is it that you'll stick with your program? A little soreness is normal if you're doing proper strength training, but you've gotta know when it's too much.

After a good lifting session I like to go sit in the hot tub for a nice soak. Sometimes I'll do some stretches in there too.
