Walking vs. Walking Uphill

I threw the incline on my treadmill up to 8% incline today and did 48 minutes at 3.5MPH. I've read a few places that a 10% incline more than doubles the number of calories burned on a flat surface, so I figure 8% has gotta be a pretty big jump in calorie expenditure.

Anyone have any experience testing this on an HRM? Just curious what to think my real numbers burned should be for the time I put in.

No idea - but I have been using this calculator for my calories burned with an incline - I hope it's accurate as my treadmill doesn't show me calories burned.

On mine, I set the number of calories I want to burn and the incline and it tells me how long it will take. Unfortunately, my treadmill only goes up to 275lbs for entered weight, and I'm currently at 339lbs, so I'm probably burning more than it's set for anyway (hopefully), lol.

try intervals too, its a great way to get your cardiac endurance built up. I do 10 min at 8-10% incline and then 5 minute "rest" at 4% incline but I always keep my speed the same (2.8 or so). You might burn a few less calories, but you will really feel your endurance building up
