Heading over to a party at the neighbors. I´ve been watching the caterers bring in stuff all morning. It is going to be a feast. How to control myself?

    It's called self control.

Eat before you go over if you need too. Drink water.

you could've worked out today to get a nice big calorie deficit to be able to indulge at the party. thats what i do. but at the party you just have to control yourself. just try taking one thing on your plate at once, not loading it up. one slice of the 6' hero, one scoop of potato salad, one serving of chips. also, go to the table, and then walk far away from it.
  • That's what I would say too. It's like when you go grocery shopping - best not done on an empty stomach. And keep your water by your side. I would imagine they may have some healthy snack stuff, like a veggie plate to snack from? You can do it!
  • Determine what's important...eating the food or losing weight...or make this your free day and enjoy yourself. I agree with the self-control comment. You have to learn to be able to deal with these types of situations now because they will always be there.

Also try to think about the social aspect of going to the neighbors and the enjoyment you get from that. What I mean is allow yourself to enjoy people- placing food lower on the "scale" so to speak.

I agree with the previous posts ... drink water before you go and focus on "healthy" snacks. Is there somewhere safe you could go for a workout/walk after the party?

Do the neighbours know that you are watching your weight? If so, you could ask them to excuse you in advance if you have to leave early - say you are avoiding all functions/temptation at the moment, but because it was their function, you really wanted to come.

When declining food/drink offered to you, say that you have to watch what you eat because of health issues - "Doctor's orders".

Alternatively if it all gets too much, you could excuse yourself, and say you are getting a migraine (which wouldn't be far from the truth).

    Good luck.

If it is a buffet, don't stand near the buffet! Limit yourself to what you initially put on your plate. Then go play with the kids that are there, if a group of folks goes outside to talk, go talk with them. Keep your hands busy with a glass of water, or coffee...

I had a weekend like that...it's been hard. I did not do well yesterday, but I'm determined to get right back on track. Try to fill up on the healthiest foods.
  • Eat something healthy BEFORE you go so you are not hungry! Good luck and try to have fun! :glasses:

Just because it's a bunch of food being brought in by a caterer doesn't mean it's going to taste good, so it could be that once you're there the temptation is much less than you might expect. I have given myself permission to not feel guilty about not eating food just because there's a lot of it and/or it's available--there are an awful lot of mediocre cooks, bakers, catering businesses, etc. around.

But in case it is really good or includes something that's hard for you to not indulge in, just take a very a small amount--even a tablespoon is enough for a taste. I often cut pre-cut portions in half, thirds, etc., and almost immediately, someone else will take the other part--it just takes someone to break the ice. If it's appetizers, don't eat them individually--put them on your plate so you know what you plan to consume.

Thanks for the great feedback. I drank lots of water and ate before I went. Everyone commented on my weight loss and didn´t push food my way. Great day!
