How would you like to be stuck in a crate for 9 hours a day only able to lie down and wait?

I'm not being aggressive. That's really the question I ask myself.

If you have a yard, that would be better.

Absolutely agree. I honestly can't think of a good reason for anyone to crate their dog, except for MAYBE on a long car ride for their safety.

I did a lot of research before deciding to crate my dog. First of all, they think of their crates as a den and are territorial about it. Being in there when their people are not home helps them feel safe and calm, especially if they get separation anxiety. Also, when in their crate they just sleep, but if roaming free they can get bored and destructive. Some dogs or breeds better in crates than others. Like I said in my earlier posts, we never have to force him in, he just goes right in when he senses that we are heading out if he hated being in there, I don't think he would do that. And to top it all off, when he has occasionally been left on his own, we came home to find him in his crate! People feel safe and cozy in their homes - that's how my dog feels about his crate.

I crate mine, tried to let him loose before and he shredded my shoes and chewed up other various things around the house. So, it depends if you trust your dog or not. He's perfectly fine when I crate him, at first he whined and whimpered as I left the house, now he dashes to his crate and waits for me when I have a treat and he loves it.

I leave a bowl of water for him and some food depending on how long I'm gone.

I crate my Australian Shepherd, it started out just to get her potty trained but now she LOVES it!! Sometimes when she gets tired and is ready for her puppy nap, she will go upstairs and sleep in her kennel. She goes in it without hesitation and would rather sleep in it than on our king bed with us! The only time she is locked in it is if we are gone for a while.

It all depends on how you use the crate. If you over abuse it and keep the dog in there most of the day then it becomes destructive to their behavior, but if you use it in moderation and only when necessary then they will grow to love it and with proper training will no longer need to be locked in it anymore.

Crating is great. It lets you know that your dog is safe and secure and is not going to get into anything or escape and get killed.

Leaving a dog outside unsupervised can lead to disaster, dogs can easily escape secure back yards when they put their mind to it.

Also leaving two or more animals unattended can lead to trouble as well, animals fight(even those that are best friends and always have been) and there's no one around to stop them when you leave them roaming your house or yard while you're at work. I'm not saying this is going to happen to everyone, but why take the chance?

The only time crating becomes cruel is when the dog is left in the crate for more than 8 hours at a time. If you are gone all day for more than 8 hours then you need to hire someone or ask a neighbor or someone that you absolutely trust, to at the very least let your dog out for 10 minutes to go potty at some point.

Also it's very important to make sure the crate is plenty big enough for them to stand up, turn around and stretch out in. If your dog has to duck it's head to sit down then the crate is too small.

Its against the law to leave your dogs out all day in my state. Even if you provide shade and water.

Well of course it's illegal. It should be illegal in every state. How would you like to be outside in 100 or -40 degree weather all day? Unless the dog likes the weather, I don't believe animals should be outside for extended times. And always a fenced in yard :)
