Hi, my name is Cris. I've been using My Fitness Pal for the past 3 weeks and i feel great. I dont think i lost much but I've learned to eat less but feeling full. I have a question for people who have Thyroid issues. I have hypothyroidism since 2006. I've leveled off for the past 2 years but i was wondering if anyone who has this lost weight just by eating less and moderate exercise. I've used my disorder as an excuse not to do anything about it but a friend of mine encouraged me and now here i am. My primary goal is NOT to take another medicine for Hypertension. I have high cholesterol already, so my doctor encouraged me to keep that hypertension pill in mind that way i can focus on losing weight....
Thank you,
Cris

Welcome! There are quite a few MFP-ers with hypothyroidism, including myself. I was diagnosed about 3 years ago and have had to have my med levels changed every few months. I'm losing weight but very slowly and it's not that I'm cheating. The best thing about MFP to me is that it helps me stay positive--if I am honest about what I am eating, drinking and exercise AND I am under calories needed to maintain my current weight, then I know there is literally nothing else I could do to speed up my weight loss. My dietitian said it will definitely be harder, and that as I gain muscle it should help boost my metablism.0

I was diagnosed back in 2000. When I was like 13....
I've taken my medication and have had lost some weight. The best thing to do is not only eat less and feel full but also get active. Just think of it like...we have no metabolism...so to kick in in gear we gotta get up and moving
Keep going and don't get discouraged! I can't stand taking too many pills so I'm determined to not have to take any more meds0 -
I've been hypo for 11 years now. I haven't had to change my dosage in years. I've both gained and lost 35lb while properly medicated and under the care of an endocrinologist. You would be surprised to find that there is only a small percentage of people so affected by their hypothyroid that they can't lose weight even after doing everything they were supposed to do. For some people it is more difficult. I have had no problem losing weight while hypo, though. My lifestyle before made me overweight, not my thyroid.0

Something I've found that's working for me lately is to take the meals I'd normally eat and break them down so I'm "grazing" all day. I'm never hungry and never full. I've really kicked my metabolism up by doing this. Not sure how long it'll last, but I'm only a few pounds from my goal anyway.0

My mother was born with a birth defect & has fought hypothyroidism her entire life, seems like every few years she needs to adjust the meds, and she's fought with weight issues the whole time too. However, about 10 years ago she found a doctor who has been very helpful. She has learned how to use her diet to keep her metabolism more stable. Because carbs give you quick bursts of energy, her doctor has recommended cutting back on carbs and getting more energy from protein instead. Protein burns slowly and steadily. She's supposed to eat something with protein in it every four hours to keep her metabolism fueled constantly and at a steady rate. It has really worked, she lost about 50 lbs total and has kept it off. Might be something you could look into.
Good luck!0 -
I have hypothroidism, however, I was just diagnosed last year. My doctor gave me synthetic thyroid hormones, and that medicine alone helped me stop gaining. Then when I joined MFP I started to loose weight. I'm not on any other medication for the condition though. My goal is to be pre-pregnancy weight (total of 40 lbs), and my prize is that my husband agreed to let me go for a cosmetic surgery that I have wanted. I hope you have good luck, if you want to know about the kinds of changes in my diet that worked for me, I'd be happy to share.

I have lost a good amount of weight doing a low carb diet. But because of another condition I decided slow and easy was the best way to go. It just killed my tummy0

Hypo for over a year, have been here on MPF since April of this year...so far down nearly 20 lbs. by keeping track of calories + exercise, and I'm running my first 5k in 2 weeks.
I'm on Levoxyl + Cytomel (T3) and I also supplement with Iodine/Iodide.
You can lose weight and get healthier! I was hesitant for the longest time because I kept reading stories about women that 'couldn't lose weight no matter what they did' so I was discouraged from the beginning. I figured, "why even try"? But then I realized that I wasn't gaining weight particularly quickly either. Might be silly, but it was THAT realization that made me believe that there was hope for me. And indeed, there was!0 -
See I'm just on Synthroid. I'm not taking anything else. No supplements or anything like that
I've often wondered if I needed anything extra but right now I'm not seeing a specialist. I think the next time I talk to my doctor I'll see if she can refer me to an endocrinologist (Hey what do you know I spelled it right on the first try! XD)0 -
I just finished reading all the responses from my question. I know i have not lost any weight..yet...i've only been on MFP for about three or four weeks but i have cut down on my portions a lot. Exercise is my biggest enemy....I work graveyard and that zaps my energy to do anything else. I know i just have to pick up where i left off, that is walking on the treadmill. I guess im one of those people who wants to see results right away. Thanks for all the responses, i will take account and regroup and keep on going..wish me luck.0
