Nope. You could eat your entire calorie amount right before you go to bed, and as long as you keep your calorie deficit, you'll lose weight.

I find the later I eat the harder it is to lose. I try not to eat after 7 or 8, but the night time munchies kill me.....

OK, I was not going to reply till I saw the last post which proved my point. Yes it does make a difference when you eat but not for the first two posters...you guys are still teens and your burning is different than ours! I sear a teenager can eat and drink when ever and whatever and as long as they keep it in the goal it will burn. Us older folks can't do that....we have to eat more early to get it to digest to get it through our system. If I eat late I feel it in the morning.

Why do you think the old folks say that it gets harder when you get older! So enjoy your youth!

Make a difference to what? To weight loss? To eating over or under goal? To world peace?

Try to eat no later then 7pm... it will give your body a chance to digest it and burn for energy.... if you just go right to bed, it will barely burn and turn into fat. I have tried this and it really does work! water water water after 7pm....

Its a myth. Your body doesn't shut down after a certain time. It's still burning As long as your are under your calories goals, you will be fine.

I need to eat pretty much just before I go to bed - most of the time I eat my biggest meal just before I go to bed - and I am at goal weight. So eat as late as you like if it helps you keep within your calories.

Some people find success with cutting off their food intake after a certain time at night - this is because of the type of snacks we tend to have at night.

If your calories and types of food are the same then it won't matter what time of day you eat, although some people find it difficult to sleep if they have just eaten (and some find it easier!).

Age has nothing to do with it.

The time of day makes no difference at all, as long as it doesn't put you over your caloric goals you can eat whenever you want.

I'm over forty, and it doesn't matter what time I eat - because logically, the whole idea that your body 'shuts off' when you go to sleep is just nonsense isn't it? You might be asleep but your body is really quite busy.

Highly debated topic, even within the medical community. Some people argue your body will break down your food better in the day. Some people argue that your body burns more calories while awake which means therefore your body would do better to burn that food off while you are awake, while others point out that while you are awake you are more likely to enact the fight or flight mechanism, which decreases digestion.

Really in the end, Id say it first off depends when you go to sleep. Many peopel say 7pm, but I go to bed at 3am. Am I expected to not eat for 8 hours? Pretty much, try not to eat before bed, but really in the end its about the number of calories consumed vs the amount burned

Sorry, but in which medical community is this a 'debated' topic?

Does your body shut down at night? No. Does your body burn calories at night? Yes. Is weightloss based primarily on the balance of calorific intake and loss over longer periods of time, such that your individual behaviour at a particular time on a particular day makes little difference. Yes.

Can it logically make an ounce of difference whether you have a snack before bed or not? No. Except in terms of the *content* of those late night snacks. If they put you over your daily intake goals they'll make a difference. If not they won't.

Your body does burn more calories while you are awake. The point is that it doesn't matter whether you burn the calories before or after you eat them. If you create a calorie deficit during the day and then eat to fill it at night there will be the same result. I don't think anybody is trying to argue that you burn the same amount of calories when you are sleeping (at least I hope not!).

Sorry, but this is a myth.

Sure, if you go to bed with a full stomach you might feel uncomfortable, but it's nonsense that it turns into fat any more than if you ate 2-3 hours beforehand.

And if you drink too much water before going to bed... you'll end up having to get up in the middle of the night to have a pee.:embarassed:

I don't go to bed on a full stomach for the simple reason I was born with Hiatis Hernia and I need to let my food go down before I lay down otherwise I'm in for an extremely uncomfortable night. I can't exercise unless I have an empty stomach for the same reason.I think it makes any difference what time you eat as long as you stay within your allowance.

I can not go to sleep if I am hungry. And I will even wake up if I am starving. And i am usually up really late. So I "plan" a late night meal. And even leave room for a little snack. And sometimes I even wake up in the middle of the night and eat. I just log everything and try not to '"blow" to much at night or I pay for it the next day (since I am up late my cut off time is 4 am, thats when I switch over to the next day. Not midnight) And I still loose weight. And I am 35 so not a "spring chicken"

It makes no difference as long as you are under you calorie goal, it is however not so good for your soul as the energy that would normally be spent replenishing you is used digesting the food.

I think I have to agree with the last poster. I think your age has a lot to do with it. The older I get the more I seee eating later in the evening my body doesn't burn it off. Frustrating for sure. I eat dinner around 6pm and other than water intake I don't like to eat in the evenings. Just water
