Well today I either did a completely stupid insane thing or something that will work out for the best. I let a couple of friends talk me into signing up for the Warrior Dash. I'm not even sure what it is. I have 7 months to get myself in shape, I have a good start on getting in shape. I know the Warrior Dash is like a obstacle course but from anyone who has done it, is it going to be even possible to be in shape enough to do it in 7 months? In 7 months I am hoping to be around my goal weight.. That will be around roughly a year of working on my healthy lifestyle. Also do you really have to jump through fire and stuff?

The fire is a few logs lit up. It's a simple hop, but looks awesome in the pictures. LOL Work on your cardio and push-ups and you'll do fine.

The warrior Dash is a 5K plus obstacles. 7 months is way more than enough time to train for it. It's really all about having fun, though....although there are people whose goal is to win it, too.

You can TOTALLY train for it in 7 months... when I did it, it wasn't as tough as the website made it out to be. The obstacles themselves arent super difficult, it is the combination of running a 5k combined with obstacles between that will get you if you arent used to that far of a distance. If you train to be able to run a 5k or more and do some speed workouts or crosstraining to get your heart rate up as well, you will do just fine.

I just did my first Warrior Dash a few weeks ago. I signed up 5 months in advance, went walking a few times, and then forgot about training.
It was tough but I finished! Its just over a 5k and that's the toughest part. I walked/hiked 99% of it because it was in the woods on dirtbike trails, but it was the hardest part. The obstacles are fun and don't take as much strength as I had read about.
    Good Luck and have fun!
We are planning our second in April

oh and wear shoes that are supportive, but you're ok with them never looking the same again!

Go to youtube and search for Warrior Dash in the area you are signed up for. Odds are you will find a video that will show you the obstacles.

I did it last month and I am still at 270+. It took me twice as long as my friends, but I still had a really good time doing it. BUT, next time I do it (and there WILL be a next time), my goal is not just to finish, but to put up a decent time.

My advice (based on my limited one time experience) for training is running for endurance (such as a C25K program) and upper arm strength. Other than that, have fun with it!

I am doing a 5k Saturday actually. The distance doesn''t scare me as much knowing it's only a 5k. The challenges from reading the websites had been what really scared me.

Doesn't help when I googled my area's warrior dash it talks how two people died on it's course this year.. O.o.

I think that was from this summer when it was like 115 outside.
Really, I'm small and in bad cardio shape and the obstacles weren't that bad as long as you don't have a SERIOUS case of being scared of heights.

I did the one in Tulsa last month. In the afternoon wave a girl slipped on one of the cars she was climbing over and got cut. Was in ICU for a couple days, but no permanent damage. I can see where there would be some danger on some of the obstacles, but (sickly) isn't that part of the thrill???

I'm actually looking at the KC Warrior Dash next year!!! I am DEFINITELY doing one next summer. Just depends on where my husband and I end up job-wise by then. We are both job searching at the moment, so who knows where we'll be :) We're from central Kansas though, so if we convence our friends from back home to go with us, it will probably be in KC.

To train, I'm currently on week 3 of C25K. But if you're running a 5k in the near future, sounds like you have the running thing down. I'm completely NOT runner, so that will be one of the challanges of training for the dash for me :) I think 6 months is plenty long enough to train. I just started lifting weights 2 nights per week and will work on steadily increasing my weight/strength until the dash.

I'm already super excited for it, and it's still so far away. It's nice to have an exercise goal to work towards. My ultimate goal is to finish with a respectable time AND to have a nice enough stomach to run it in a crop-top :)

    Good luck to you!

My husband and I are thinking of doing the Warrior Dash in KC next year :)

It is totally intimidating, but they will give me a warrior hat, that will make it all okay
  • Yea, I think would like to run in the KC Warrior Dash . . . I am also considering the Ruckus Run in Kansas City early next month, but we will see how that goes. A big part of the answer on that might be if I can find anyone to do it with. lol

By far, the worst looking part for me is going to be the running.

My wife (Alycra) is awesome. I just mentioned the idea of the Warrior Dash to her as an idea in passing as a friend of mine did it in Detroit last year, and I was looking at the website and she has been talking me into doing it more then anything else. :) From what I have heard, some of the best looking advice I have found for it was to wear pants and gloves, but we will see.

As far as the two that died last year in KC, I read up on that and it was partially the approx 115 degree heat index, and a lack of water. While it was available, they did not drink as much as they should have. I think that like anything, there is going to be some degree of risk to it, but that you just need to do what you can to mitigate those risk factors, and outside of that have fun. :)

The fuzzy hat and the medal to wear around the neck is awesome. But the turkey leg at the end of the race is supreme!!!
  • The Warrior Dash rocks! I did it in May and the Jailbreak in September. Check out my photos. You can do it! Just run, do some sit ups and leg exercises and you will knock it out and have fun doing it.
