Running vs Walking

I have always loved to run. I feel like I get my exercise when I run. However, due to some knee problems I am told not to run and that it is the worst exercise for my knees.I am currently wearing a brace and will be getting an MRI pretty soon. I want to continue running because I feel like walking doesn't do much. Internally I know I am wrong, there a lot's of people who have lost weight just walking, I guess I just want to know if you have suggestions on how to change your mindset. For those walking only people, how long do you walk for and do you tone up as well? Thanks!

Hey there!! My dad was diagnosed with diabetes about a year and half ago. At this time he totally changed the way he ate and started walking. He has done amazing with just walking. He has never once ran and just walks. He walks for about an hour and he tries to walk hills also. He has lost 50+ pounds and looks great!! He is super skinny now (he wasnt totally obese) so no he did not have a lot to lose. Sometimes people think oh that person cant run because they are so over weight, but that is not the case with my dad. He is at a healthy weight now and could not be prouder. I once asked him why he did not take up running and he just said "why run when I can drop pounds by just walking." I also want to be clear that he knows what his target heart rate is and makes sure that is stays in that range while he is walking, so no it is not a leisurely walk, it is a brisk walk that makes you sweat. I am a runner and I once went on a walk with him and it kicked my butt!! :)

Anyways you can do it!! Just make sure you get your heart rate going and you will still see the loss.

The only difference between the two is the length of time needed to burn the same number of calories and the impact on the joints.

You can burn calories 2x faster (or more) running the same amount of time than you would walking for the same amount of time.

However, if your knee is bothering you it might be better to walk and cut calories back a little bit.

    Thanks cdevine

I have taken brisk walks but usually only for about 30 minutes maybe I need to increase the time!

Yes, I think that is why I am just bummed about not running, that I won't be able to burn as much which put a damper on my parade..lol
