Ladies - food/appetite at time of the month?

I'm due my period soon. I have horrendous PMS which lasts about 3 weeks...My appetite always increases hugely during this time and I find weight loss impossible. However, the past two periods have been particularly bad. And now instead of just being really hungry, I find the food I normally eat tastes completely different. Vile in fact.
I'm finding myself gagging and unable to swallow cottage cheese. The surumi sticks I snack on just taste weird and I can't stomach them. Even the texture of cooked chicken is making me feel a bit sick.
But as soon as my period starts, I go back to normal.
It's very frustrating because I can't live off bread for 3 weeks of every month...
Does anyone else get this?

If it is that severe, you should talk to your doctor. Yes, most women have cravings and hold water and gain weight and have mood swings, etc. each month. Three weeks of it is something beyond normal.0

So you have PMS for 3 weeks and your period for 1 week? That's the entire month. This is definitely something you should talk to your doctor about. How do you even know it's PMS if it's the way you are all the time?0

I agree a call to your doctor might be in order.... three weeks is a bit extreme.0 -
Wow.. No I don't get this at all. I'll obviusly pick up to a kilo when my period is due to start but thats it. I'll maybe be a bit pms - y for 2 days before I start but thats it. I actually chatted to my doc today, and he said taking vitamin B6 really helps a lot with all the symptoms of PMS. Maybe you should look into getting a B6 tablet or shot or something?0

I don't have it for anywhere near 3 weeks, but yes, I get this.
The week before I cannot even take my supplements as they make me gag and feel really nauseous. However, when it comes to food, I turn into a monster wanting to eat everything in sight!
I agree with the above poster, you should really go to the doctor.... good luck0 -
I agree about going to the doctor,, I have PCOS and endometriosis and have the same things going on (not saying thats your problem)
However, since I have lost weight and started taking better care of myself , I have had some amazing results around that time and I haven't felt near as bad.0 -
I definitely notice an upswing in appetite every month (and therefore I always have a couple of cheat days!) and a loss in motivation to excerise as well. I'm so cliche but I totally end up gorging on some form of chocolate (usually brownies because they are easiest to make!) and having all this extra chocolate around when my cravings go away!!
However, the fact that food is changing tastes makes me wonder if there is a larger hormonal imbalance than just normal PMS (and your normal PMS was pretty severe to beging with!). I would recommend getting in to see your doctor, preferable during one of the spells, or at least calling the office/an ask-a-nurse-hotline to see if maybe you should have your hormone levels checked (since what you are describing sounds like pregnancy appetite changes almost!). I'm not a physician, just a medical student, so take with a grain of salt if you desire!0 -
Geez, ever think about getting on Seasonale and just not having one? Works for me and I don't have any of these issues, why should we be stuck losing weeks every month for no reason :flowerforyou:0

The PMS thing is an on going saga with my doctor. I've been told there's not much they can do. I had to stop taking the pill a couple of years ago because I developed focal migraines. So that means no pill, no injection, no implant. I can't have the mini pill because it gives me acne. (I've just finished taking a course of Roaccutane so my skin is clear now). I have PCOS but I can't take metformin because it makes me faint and puke.
I don't particularly want the coil because I've never had children so they don't recommend it. Plus the Mirena coil can flare acne and that's not a risk I want to take again.
I've been keep a monthly cycle diary for 6 months and it's definitely related to my period.
However, I have heard accupuncture works for some people...maybe I should give that a try?0
